4 DESCRBE THE REQUESTED COURSE/PROGRAM ACTON (additional pages may be attached if necessary): We propose a modification of the 48-credit Counseling Psychology Track that exists within the M.S. in Applied Psychology Program (APPL). The modification will allow students to choose a Counseling Psychology Science Specialization by which to finish the degree. This Specialization will be taken by students who aim for a doctoral study and/or careers in research. Coursework currently taken in the Counseling Psychology Track is listed below: Counseling Psychology Track (48 cr) Core (12 cr) 601- Bio Bases Learning & Cog 631--lntermediate Stats 632-Research Methods Required (33 cr) 602- Ethics Theory 606--Basic Counseling 608 (or 617 or 618)-Assessment 61D-Psychopathology 613-Human Development 622-Group Counseling 623-Career Counseling 62S-Multicultural Counseling 703-Practicum in Counseling Elective (3 cr) SET FORTH THE RATONALE FOR THS PROPOSAL: A significant number of Counseling Psychology students in UB's APPL Program enter the program to prepare for doctoral study. A smaller, yet still significant number actually apply and are accepted into Ph.D. programs. This number has ranged from one to five students per year in recent years. These students do not need as many clinically-oriented courses as are taken by students preparing to practice at the master's level. The Science Specialization is expected to assist in recruitment of well-qualified students who aspire to doctoral training, for which completion of a thesis is an asset. Once enrolled, these students will be better-served by a specialization with fewer required credits that also allows for more science and research preparation and involvement. Since this specialization will be comprised entirely of courses that are offered in the existing program, no additional resources will be needed to implement it. Summer

5 Counseling Psychology Track New: Specialization - Counseling Psychology Science Fonn 0: DESCRBE THE REQUESTED COURSEPROGRAM ACTON: Full Text We propose a modification ofthe 48-credit Counseling Psychology Track that exists within the M.S. in Applied Psychology Program (APPL). The modification will allow students to choose a Counseling Psychology Science Specialization by which to finish the degree. This Specialization will be taken by students who aim for a doctoral study and/or careers in research. Coursework currently taken in the Counseling Psychology Track is listed below: Counseling Psychology Track (48 cr) Core (12 cr) Bio Bases Learning & Cog 631--ntermediate Stats 632--Research Methods Required (33 cr) Ethics Theory 606--Basic Counseling 608 {or 617 or 618)-Assessment 610--Psychopathology 613-Human Development 622-Group Counseling 623--Career Counseling 625-Multicultural Counseling Elective (3 cr) The Science Specialization will replace three classes, APPL 613, APPL 623, and one semester of APPL 703, which are not needed for advancing to doctoral study/science careers, with electives. The electives include courses such as APPL 789, Research Proposal Development, and APPL 799, Thesis in Applied Psychology, through which a thesis can be completed. The program can be completed in two years. The proposed curriculum appears below. Core (12 cr) Bio Bases Learning & Cog

6 631--ntennediate Stats 632--Research Methods Required (24 cr) Ethics Theory 606--Basic Counseling 608 (or 617 or 618)-Assessment 610--Psychopathology 622-Group Counseling 625-Multicultural Counseling Electives (12 cr) A separate action will create a Counseling Psychology Practice Specialization. Thus, students will have the option of continuing in the 48-credit track as it currently exists, or to choose either the Science or the Practice Specialization. The other major track in the APPL degree program, ndustrial/organizational (VO) Psychology, will remain unchanged.
