1 SYLLABUS SPAN 115 -Hispanic Studies I- Fall 2017 COURSE INFORMATION Faculty Dr. Yun Sil Jeon Office: Brittain Hall 328 Telephone Office hours MWF 11:00-11:50 am/tth 10:50 am-12:00 pm/th 1:00-2:00pm or by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES Hispanic Studies I. (5) This class introduces students to the Spanish language and the many facets of Hispanic cultures. This course also helps students develop the basic language skills of speaking, listening, and communicating in everyday situations in Hispanic cultures. As a hybrid course, three credit are delivered face-to-face and two hours via distance learning format. Since a significant part of the instruction in this course is done online, it is vital for students to complete their work by the deadline and to come to class having completed the pre-class assignments. Instructors will not use the classes to explain grammar but rather to give students the opportunity to practice what they have learned (vocabulary, grammar, etc.) with a wide variety of communicative activities, and also engaging students with the rich cultural facets of the Hispanic cultures. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES After successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. apply foreign language skills consistent with the level of study. 2. identify cultural perspectives through language study. 3. RECOGNIZE that basic cultural differences do exist and that learning a language enables a person to better understand and interact with the people who use the language natively. COURSE MATERIAL Textbook: We will use McGraw-Hill Connect platform and LearnSmart. COURSE SET-UP The course has several components. We focus on communicative proficiency through various activities. 1. Distance learning format (two credit hours) This two credits part will include pronunciation and controlled production practice activities, those that can be acquired throughout more automatic and repetitive exercises online. 2. Three face-to-face meetings (three credit hours) Three 50-minute (MWF) or two 75-minute (TTh) professor-led class per week: During the class meetings with your professor, you will utilize the time for doing pair or group activities to apply what you learned to Hispanic Studies: Syllabus-Fall, Page 1
2 a real-world situation, and also to participate in cultural presentations and activities directly related to the rich cultural facets of the Hispanic world. GRADING Your grade will be based on the following scale: Letter Grade CCU Standard Low % High % A Excellent B+ Very Good B Good C+ Above Average C Average D+ Below Average D Poor F Fail Your final grade in the course will break down as follows: 1 in class participation grade 8% 1 oral interview 12% Project presentation/cultural activities 20% Online exercises (pronunciation exercises included) 20% Quizzes 20% 1 midterm exam 10% 1 final exam 10% 1. Class participation grade: reflects attendance, preparation for class, attentiveness and focus, the effort made to answer questions (in Spanish) and take part in both class and small group activities, as well as the effort made to use the Spanish language spontaneously. Absences will be excused only for those documented cases listed on the catalog. Students will be allowed four (4) unexcused absences on the MWF schedule or three (3) unexcused absences on the MW / TTh schedule throughout the semester. For each additional unexcused absence, two (2) points will be taken off the final grade. Students who miss in excess of 25% of all class meetings (unexcused absences) will receive a failing grade. (25% = 10 absences for MWF classes and 7 absences for TTh classes). (Authorized by the Dean's Office, January 3, 2011). 2. Oral interview: will be scheduled in 15-minute blocks during which time a partner and you will speak with your instructor using grammar and vocabulary that you have studied thus far in the course. Your professor will provide you with all necessary information on this exercise. Your professor will grade your pronunciation, comprehensibility, fluency and pace, content and syntax, and grammatical competence. 3. Project presentation/cultural activities: To be determined. 4. Online exercises: will be done through the McGraw-Hill online site Connect and LearnSmart and Blackboard. There will be exercises/activities to be completed before and after each class meeting. Students are encouraged to complete additional activities for further practice and review, however, those will not be considered in computing this portion of the grade. Students can (and should) practice an activity before completing it for submission. They must follow the syllabus as outlined for maximum success in the course, i.e. to be prepared for and benefit most from face-to-face sessions. Hispanic Studies: Syllabus-Fall, Page 2
3 Pronunciation exercises will be part of the online exercises: They are useful for professors to evaluate specific aspects of your pronunciation. Each student records a passage assigned before the due date and later receives individual comments and evaluation from your professor. NOTE: Start working in the assignments well before the due date. You may find it easier to break up the assigned reading and the assigned activities 6. Quizzes: These short quizzes will test grammar points and/or vocabulary covered in the lesson up to that point, and are primarily based on online exercises. 7. Midterm exam: will be administered once at the midpoint of the semester. It will be designed to test whether you can apply the information you have been learning and use the grammatical structures and vocabulary studied within real-world contexts. There will be a study guide with sample exam items. 8. Final Exam: is the same as the midterm exam in structure and objectives. For this two-hour cumulative paper exam, there will be a study guide. COURSE POLICIES 1. Only homework submitted by the deadline will receive credit. No late work of any kind will be accepted. 2. It is vital for students to be prepared for each session so that class time can be spent on activities that allows students to practice and apply the material learned online, and not with the instructor explaining grammar. 3. EXTRA CREDIT assignments will NOT be made. 5. NO MAKE UPS will be given for any graded work without a prompt, VALID excuse, and must be scheduled immediately. HONOR CODE Academic dishonesty in any form is unacceptable, because any breach in academic integrity, however small, strikes destructively at the University s life and work. Outside help of any kind on any assignment that is to be turned in for a grade is considered academic dishonesty. However, your online textbook, class notes, and web resources (NOT WEB TRANSLATORS, NO COPY AND PASTE ) may be consulted for homework assignments, compositions, and other out-ofclass work unless you are specifically instructed otherwise by your professor. Quizzes and exams must also be completed entirely by each individual student with no help of any sort from fellow classmates, dictionaries, textbooks or notes; and furthermore, on every quiz and exam the student must write out the pledge "I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on this exam". Group study, however, is an activity that is both accepted and recommended. In preparation for any exam or quiz, students may work together to help one another prepare. Final exam: time location TBA Note for the culture section: The Spanish section has 13 full time faculties from 9 different countries: Spain, United States, Nicaragua, Argentina, México, Guatemala, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Puerto Rico, each one with distinct background, knowledge, and life experience. We want to use these resources to enrich the cultural offering. It could be through presentations, panel discussions, cooking demonstrations, film screenings, or others.
