ACADEMIC INTEGRITY/ PLAGIARISM: According to the WCAS web page, [i]n a scholarly community like Northwestern, academic integrity is of the utmost importance. Students are responsible for reading and understanding NU's policies on Academic Integrity. o It is essential that the work presented in all written work, as well as the work for all oral presentations, quizzes, etc., is solely that of the student. It is unacceptable to have others read and critique papers, homework, etc., or provide suggestions on grammar and vocabulary. o The use of specialized computer translation programs is also prohibited. 2

3 o If assistance is received on any assignment, it should only come from Spanish Department-run tutoring services or your professor. In such case the student must disclose that s/he has received this help by recording this fact at the end of the assignment and certifying it with a signature. Any student who fails to adhere to these rules will be in violation of the Northwestern Academic Integrity policy. SSD: Students with documented disabilities, or those who suspect they might have a disability, should get in touch with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities to arrange for accommodations. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the instructor is informed of any necessary arrangements with sufficient time before any exam, composition, etc. Students can find more information at All discussions will remain confidential. GRADING SYSTEM: 4 Departmental Chapter Quizzes 8% each): 32% In-class compositions 6% each): 12% Participation/Attendance: 10% Homework/In-Class Work or Short Quizzes: 10% Project I: La comida argentina : 10% Project II: Feria : 10% Audiovisual Program Quiz Average (after 2 drops): 12% Lab Exam: 4% COURSE REQUIREMENTS: QUIZZES: There will be four departmental chapter quizzes during the quarter that cover the content, vocabulary, grammar, and culture of each textbook chapter, as well as content from the audiovisual program (La Usurpadora). IN-CLASS COMPOSITIONS: There will be 2 in-class compositions. You may rewrite the corrected compositions for up to 3 more percentage points. Compositions will be on a theme related to the content studied in the course and will be announced on the day of the composition. PARTICIPATION/ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend class. Unexcused absences may have a negative impact on your final grade. The grade for oral participation is based on active, engaged participation. Your participation grade will be severely affected if you arrive late for class regularly. This portion of the grade cannot be replaced by any other extra work. HOMEWORK/IN-CLASS WORK: Each instructor will assign regular homework. Some instructors may also have in-class work and/or short quizzes that count toward the grade. PROJECTS: COMIDA ARGENTINA AND FERIA o The projects will consist of readings, activities, and presentations about a) Argentinean cuisine and b) programs for study or work in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and the Dominican Republic. o These projects will each consist of three parts: 1) an interpretative part, involving an authentic reading on the subject and subsequent assignment; 2) an interpersonal part, involving an in-class discussion or activity; 3) a presentational part, involving the communication of your work to the rest of the class. The projects goals are to promote interactive and communicative engagement with the course content in ways that apply to the world outside of the classroom and university. AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAM: LA USURPADORA You will watch the Mexican mini-series La Usurpadora in Spanish and Prior to viewing the video, you are REQUIRED to read the pre-reading we post on the Course Management web site. These readings are used to provide content information as well as to practice reading skills. They will be discussed in class regularly and will form part of the video quiz and exams. You may print these readings. Plan to view the mini-series video for 50 minutes. There will be an online quiz on the pre-reading and video episode that you must do by 8:00 a.m. on the due date. You may drop two video quiz 3

4 grades. If you miss a quiz for any reason, it will count as one of your drops. Important: You must the Technical Coordinator BEFORE 5:00 p.m. the afternoon before the episode is due if you are having problems viewing the episode or taking the quiz. Tech problems can be erratic. You may have no problems for 10 episodes and then suddenly have a problem. So plan ahead! Should you choose to take the quiz after 5:00 p.m., please be aware that you will have no recourse if you have technical problems, and that quiz will count as a drop! So please don t wait until the last minute to take your quizzes. They will be posted 3 days in advance. Make sure you view the correct episode and take the correct quiz! You may view the video at your convenience on any campus computer, including the ones in your dormitory. However, it s important to watch the video early in case it isn t working on a particular computer. The MMLC computers are always an option if the video isn t working elsewhere. More information is posted on Course Management/La Usurpadora. Do not use online translation applications to translate video readings as this will interfere with your Spanish learning progress and will be a detriment on later assessments. Moreover, this is a direct violation of Northwestern s Academic Integrity policy, as outlined above. During the quarter you will take a Listening Comprehension Lab Exam. You will view an episode of the video program in the MMLC lab and answer questions while watching. HOW TO ACCESS THE VIDEO PROGRAM: 1) Go to Course Management and click on the Spanish ALL SECTIONS link. 2) Click on the La Usurpadora tab. 3) Choose Video reading and quiz. Make sure you select the correct episode, and then read the prereading. When you feel confident that you understand the information, click on the link to watch the episode. 4) After clicking on the link, you will see a new window with the streaming video. Click on the appropriate episode number (i.e. #1). An authentication window will appear and you will enter the username (always miniserie) and the password for that particular episode (available in the pre-reading for each episode). 5) After viewing the episode twice, you may click on the link for the video episode quiz. 6) IMPORTANT: once you click on the quiz link, you must complete the quiz in 10 minutes. DO NOT open any other windows or try to click on the back arrow at any time. Doing this will nullify the quiz and you cannot take it again! 4
