1 SUMMER Fall 2014 At this year s Autumn s Promise, more than 160 members of the Steere House Community enjoyed cocktails and dinner as they perused a variety of auction and raffle items for the taking. The evening s program honored the work of this year s Steere House Legacy Award Recipients, Richard DeRienzo and LGC&D, as well as recognized Outstanding Steere House Employee, Paula Torres. The smiles on the faces of those pictured here seem to indicate that a good time was had by all. Go to steerehouse.org to see more photos. Inside This Issue Celebrating with Julie Richard Ann Saccoccia, Partner in Philanthropy Lift Van Campaign Update
2 A Letter from the Executive Director Julie H. Richard, NHA, MA Celebrations by traveling to Florida where he spent five days visiting six of Orlando s finest theme parks! Since the definition of celebrate also includes to say something is great or important, I d like to recognize the efforts of many within our Community who have put us on our way toward a new lift van and, at the same time, helped us to make what was once old, new again as we donated our 91 van to a deserving veterans organization. While we still have a way to go before we get our new van, momentum toward our goal is building and that is both great and important. Now, as the holidays approach, we have even more reasons to celebrate. Whatever way you choose to celebrate the season, I hope it includes a lot of love and laughter. Best wishes, Pictured (l-r): Michele Marchesseault ADON, Paula Torres CNA, Kim Morse, Rehab. Director, Irene Peck, Elda Roman, Robert Plante (resident), Linda Plante (mother) and Dorothy Nicholls, LCSW. I ve been thinking a lot about celebrations. Why? Maybe because Steere House has had a few reasons to celebrate lately. I ve also been thinking about the many different ways there are to celebrate. For Ann Saccocia and her son, Joe Carnevale, they celebrate the life of their son and brother, Rob by bringing friends together for an afternoon of golf, camaraderie and remembrance making sure his spirit lives. For Steere House, we designate a night in October to come together and celebrate the friendships and work partnerships that help to make such a difference in the lives of our residents and patients. We also take time to recognize those who do just that little something special to make an impact like our award recipients, Richard DeRienzo and Paula Torres. Then there s Robert Plante (pictured above). For most of the summer, Robert was a rehab patient here, after suffering a tibia/fibula fracture. His rehab was difficult at times, but with his mother, Linda and our rehab and nursing staff in his corner, Robert hung in there waiting for the day when he could celebrate his return home. He did just that recently This year s Annual Campaign initiative to purchase a new van was done to replace our 1991 Ford lift van. Recently Steere House donated the van to Veterans Inc. of Worcester, MA, a homeless veterans shelter. Accepting the keys on behalf of the organization is Paul Dunn, Captain, U.S. Army and a case manager at the shelter. The van will be used to transport veterans to job sites and on other outings. Pictured (l-r): Facilities Director, Karl Kuhn Sr., Executive Director Julie Richard, Captain Paul Dunn and a shelter resident.
3 5 th Annual Rob Carnevale Memorial Golf Tournament (l-r) Ann Saccocia and her son Joe Carnevale at the 5th Annual Rob Carnevale Memorial Golf Tournament In September, Ann Saccocia and her son, Joe Carnevale hosted the Annual Rob Carnevale Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of Rob Carnevale, their son and brother as well as a Steere House patient for a short time. Now in its fifth year, the tournament continues to designate a portion of the funds raised to support key initiatives at Steere House. This year, Steere House received a $4,750 gift to support the Steere House Lift Van initiative. Our thanks go to Ann and Joe for this generous gift and in recognition of their ongoing efforts on our behalf, Steere House will honor Ann as our Partner in Philanthropy at this year s 2014 Association of Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day on November 25 th. The event is just one more way we d like to say thank you for all Ann and Joe do for Steere House. Steere House Lift Van Campaign Update This year Steere House announced that our 2014 Annual Appeal Campaign would raise funds for the purchase of a passenger lift van. With the current van no longer suitable for our needs, a new lift van s seating and wheel chair accommodation will allow us to take small groups of residents on Activity Department planned outings, spontaneous trips, as well as needed medical appointments. Access to a reliable, comfortable van is an important way to expand Steere House life beyond our facility walls. Initial cost estimates for a van are approximately $50,000. Due to the van s high cost, we have anticipated that it may take longer than a year for us to raise the funds needed, yet now more than half-way through the year, we are on our way toward meeting our goal. To date, we have raised over $17,000. This total reflects funds raised through our Annual Appeal campaign to date, Employee Development Team fundraisers and the Steere House Walk, as well as proceeds received from the Rob Carnevale Golf Tournament and another $3,100 raised during last month s Autumn s Promise Fund the Need auction. Recognizing the need for a new van, the Steere House Community is making a concerted effort to raise the funds needed. Soon our Year-End Annual Appeal will find its way to your mailbox and we hope you will consider joining those in the Steere House Community who have already participated to support this need and give a gift today. The beauty of the open road and the feel of wind in your face is a road trip we can all appreciate. Imagine how the new van s seating and wheel chair accommodation would make taking small groups of residents on outings easier and just that much more enjoyable.
