Since its founding in 1997, the number of homeless pets killed in the city has been reduced by nearly 70 percent, but nearly 14,000 homeless pets are still being killed in Chicago every year. In 2014 alone, PAWS Chicago found homes for 5,952 homeless pets and performed 18,290 spay and neuter surgeries through its Lurie Clinic and GusMobile Spay/Neuter Van.
