A YEAR AT SUNBURY NURSING HOMES

Introduction 2013 was a busy year for all of us here at Sunbury Nursing Homes. From January s Pink Party to blow away the winter s blues, to Valentine s Day, St Patrick s Day and even a Beach Party, we always had a reason to celebrate! Over the years our residents have been treated to performances by choirs and bands from the local area and 2013 was no different. Along with old favourites from Chennestone School and the Open Door Church, we were entertained by students from Springfield Primary School with singing and poetry, and students from ArtsEd drama school returned in March to treat us all to two days of Shakespeare performances.
School Days Over the years our residents have been treated to visits from local schools and clubs and 2013 was no different. As well as visits from old favourites we were visited for the first time by students from Springfield Primary School. Choir Concerts This Christmas we were all entertained by not one but two wonderful carol concerts by choirs from St Ignatius and Chennestone primary schools. Springfield in Spring A year group from Springfield Primary School entertained our residents this Spring with singing and performance poetry. Campfire Evening with the Beavers A group of local Beavers returned to provide the residents with a campfire evening in November. The residents joined in with singing traditional campfire songs around an artificial campfire and camp food.
SHAKESPEARE IN SUNBURY In 2012 MA students ArtsEd drama school in Chiswick performed Shakespeare s Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing for our residents, following on from the success of those performances we welcomed the new MA students in March 2013 and were treated to two afternoons of Shakespeare. This year, instead of performing two plays, the performances were scenes from many Shakespeare plays based around the themes; Secrets & Lies and The Four Humours. The performances were full of music, dancing, brightly coloured costumes, beautiful singing and outstanding acting. Even though some roles were shared by a number of students and the scenes were from a variety of plays the stories unfolded clearly from the residents and were brought alive by the ArtsEd students. The residents were immersed in their very own West End in the Weir House Drawing Room, they enjoyed the performances enormously and after the final bows the students chatted over tea and cake with the residents.

RESIDENT REVIEWS Magnificent acting! The acting was superb! A lovely afternoon Marvellous! It was lovely I loved it It was magnificent We will be watching out for them when they get big!
RED NOSE DAY Montford Lounge was decked out in decorations On Red Nose Day in March residents and staff joined together for a day of fun and fundraising in aid of Comic Relief. and tablecloths designed and created by the residents. It was a day packed with food and traditional games; Guess the weight of the cake, How many sweets are in the jar? and hilarious attempts to eat a sugar coated doughnut without licking your lips! Our Red Nose Day here at Sunbury Nursing Homes was a great success, everyone had lot of fun raising money for Comic Relief.
CELEBRATIONS Throughout 2013 our residents have celebrated special days in style Valentine s Day The residents celebrated Valentine s Day this year with a party, heart cakes and a special Valentine s Day Quiz. St Patrick s Day On the 17 th March the nursing home was decked out in the colours of the Irish flag as residents celebrated St Patrick s Day with a day of food, festivities and Irish music. St George s Day St George s Day was celebrated by our residents with food, drink and party games.
BIRTHDAYS Throughout 2013 we celebrated many birthdays with parties, music and cake!
AUTUMN HIGHLIGHTS Harvest Festival Children from Chennestone School came with gift boxes from their Harvest Festival and treated the residents s to a concert in October. Halloween The Conservatory was transformed for our Halloween party with spooky decorations. The residents enjoyed a night of ghost marshmallows, chocolate vampires, games and a Halloween quiz! Fireworks Thanks to bad weather, this year s Guy Fawkes night was firework-less; instead the residents enjoyed a night of mulled wine, soup and hotdogs and the fireworks were set off in a spectacular display at another event the next week once the weather had cleared!
WINTER WONDERLAND The Christmas season at Sunbury Nursing Homes kicked off with two lively carol concerts from the children of St Ignatius Primary School and Chennestone School. As always the residents were thoroughly entertained by the performances and delighted to meet the groups of local children. It was a very musical Christmas was this year at Sunbury Nursing Homes; as well as concerts from local schools the residents had their own carol singing event in December and on Christmas Eve members of the Open Door Church came for their traditional carol singing with the residents.
THE CHRISTMAS BAZAAR This December Weir House became home to the Sunbury Nursing Homes Christmas Bazaar full of cakes, tray bakes and various stalls including a Lucky Dip with prizes of chocolate, sweets and beauty products, Guess the weight of the cake, How many coins are in the jar? and Name the Teddy as well as a raffle with prizes of a Christmas Hamper and wine. Fletcher the Teddy Staff and relatives made this special day possible from donations to manning the stalls. Tea and cake was served throughout the afternoon and the cake stall was particularly popular with homemade sponges and Christmas cakes for sale. The afternoon was a great success with everyone entering into the spirit of a traditional Bazaar and enjoying themselves enormously.
