1 Italian 1010 Summer Syllabus Instructor: Silvia E. Smith, Ph.D. Contact: TA: Signora Maura Agate (contact on Canvas) Course Objectives Italian 1010 is an entry-level, self-study course. In this class students will be offered the opportunity to learn basic verbal communication skills in Italian, as well as different aspects of the Italian culture. Students will also learn every-day vocabulary, including likes, dislikes, weather, food, greetings, etc. This course is designed to be completed in one semester, and your study material has been divided in weekly sections, with a quiz and homework assignment due BY every Thursday at 11:00 PM Utah time (Mountain Time). NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUR PRIOR AUTHORIZATION. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO UPLOAD YOUR ASSIGNMENT. Maura and I are happy to give you feedback if the assignment is submitted by Wednesday at noon Utah time. We will provide feedback in time for you to submit a correct version for credit on Thursday. Homework: There will be weekly assignments that should be uploaded on Canvas, in the appropriate box for the week. All homework is due by Thursday of every week at 11:00 PM. Late homework will not be accepted unless previous arrangements were made. Quizzes: There are weekly quizzes of mixed format. They will have multiple-choice questions, fill in the blank questions, and short answers/essays. All quizzes will be available from Monday to Thursday at 11:00 PM of each week, and you may take them as soon as you have finished learning the material for each week. Quizzes are openbook but timed (about 30 minutes) and will automatically close after 11:00 PM on Thursday each week. NO late quizzes will be given unless previous arrangements have been made with the instructor. Should you lose Internet connection while you are taking the quiz, don't panic! Your required textbook will also be used for Italian 1020 during Spring semester. * The companion website for your book, where you can find videos and many other study aides, is listed on your textbook. Other book editions are ok, but page numbers may not correspond. 2 CALENDAR Week 1 (May 11-15) Material to be covered: Unita` Preliminare. A) Le Presentazioni (Introducing yourself in Italian). Learn vocab under Si Dice Cosi` using your instructor-provided CD and your Parliamo Italiano CD ROM. Note that there are several Si Dice Cosi` sections in each chapter! Do exercises A (section A1), and exercises E and G (section A3) or exercises P.1, P.5, and P.7 for the 4th Edition. B) I Saluti (Greetings) Do exercise A (section B1), or exercise p.9 for the 4th Edition. Learn the alphabet using your CD ROM and online resources. Learn the numbers from 1 to 20 using your CD ROM and online resources. Do exercise C (B1) or exercise p.11 for the 4th Edition. Quiz! Make sure to take your first quiz. Week 2 (May 18-22) Material to be covered: Unita` 1, Sections A and B. Unita` 1.A) La Geografia (Geography). Read the dialog (A2). Learn about the gender of nouns and how to make the plural of Italian words using both your class notes and online resources. Do exercises D and F (A2), and C (A3) or exercises 1.4, 1.6, and 1.12 for the 4th Edition. Unita` 1.B) La Citta` (The City). Learn the following on B3: subject pronouns, the simple present of the verb essere (To Be) and c e`/ci sono (there is /there are). Use the class notes and your online resources to help you learn. Read the dialog on B2. Do exercises A and B (B2), or exercise 1.16 and 1.17 for the 4th Edition. Learn the definite articles (B3). Do ALL 3 exercises B (B3), or exercises 1.25, 1.30, 1.31, and for the 4th Edition. Quiz! Make sure to take your second quiz. 2

Learn vocab under Si Dice Cosi` using your instructor-provided CD and your online resources. Read the dialogue (C2). Do exercise A (C2), or exercise 1.35 for the 4th Edition. Learn the verb Avere (To Have) and the idiomatic expressions with avere (C3). Do exercises C and D (C3), or exercise 1.41 and 1.42 for the 4th Edition. Learn the simple prepositions using the class notes to help you learn (C3). Do exercises B (C3), or exercise 1.46 for the 4th Edition. Unita` 1.D) La Data (Today s Date). Learn vocab under Si Dice Cosi` using your instructor-provided CD and your online resources. Read the letter (D2). Do exercise C (D2), or exercise 1.51 for the 4th Edition. Learn the present Indicative of ARE verbs (Prima Coniugazione) also using your class notes and online resources. Read carefully and practice conjugating the verbs both orally and in written form (D3). Do exercises A, C, and D (D3) or exercises 1.55, 1.57, 1.58 for the 4th Edition. Quiz! Make sure to take your third quiz. Week 4 (June 1-5) Material to be covered: Unita` 1, Immagini e Parole. Immagini e Parole -Read the article La Geografia del Bel Paese at the end of Unita` 1. -Do exercises on p. 53 B, or exercise 1.67 for the 4th Edition. Video -Watch video for Unita` 1 using the companion website and review all of the vocab for the quiz. -Write a short summary of about 20 words IN ITALIAN of the video that you watched and upload as part of your homework for this week.
