2 Co.As.It. Italian Language Courses Since its establishment in 1967, Co.As.It. has been involved in the teaching of the Italian language and still today this remains one of the major activities of the organisation. The Adult Italian Language Program offers language and culture courses ranging from Beginners through to Advanced. It also offers specialist courses in language, conversation and Italian Language through Film. Classes are held in the day and evening and are conducted by qualified, experienced teachers. As part of the Co.As.It Education Services, an After Hours Italian Program is also offered which caters for students of Italian from pre-school through to VCE support classes. Participants and teachers in an eight week full-time immersion course in the Italian language organised by Co.As.It From time to time, informal gatherings may be held, enabling students to immerse themselves in the Italian language. These events may include film screenings. These events, are only offered to currently enrolled students.

3 Course Outline The learning of any language involves listening, speaking, reading and writing and all four strands are incorporated in each course. It is expected that students can progress from Beginners to Intermediate and onto Advanced. Each module runs for a term. Beginners Italian : 1 x 2 hour lesson per week Beginners 1, 2, 3, 4 : prescribed text: Arrivederci! 1 : for English speakers : a multimedia Italian course : student's book & workbook Intermediate Italian : 1 x 2 hour lesson per week Intermediate 1, 2, : prescribed text: Arrivederci! 1 : for English speakers : a multimedia Italian course : student's book & workbook Intermediate 3, 4: prescribed text: Arrivederci! 2 : for English speakers : a multimedia Italian course : student's book & workbook Upper Intermediate: 1 x 2 hour lesson per week Upper Intermediate 1, 2, 3, 4 Prescribed Text: Prego! An Invitation to Italian, McGraw Hill (8th edition) Advanced Italian: 1 x 2 hour lesson per week Advanced 1,2,3,4 Prescribed Text: Prego! An Invitation to Italian, McGraw Hill (7th edition) Intermediate Italian Conversation: Ongoing Course: 1 x 2 hour lesson per week (Maximum 10 students). Advanced Conversation: Ongoing course: 1x 2 hour lesson per week (Maximum 10 students). Advanced Conversation: Ongoing course: 1 x 2 hour lesson per week An entry point for the advanced student of Italian who has an excellent knowledge of grammatical structures and an excellent understanding of spoken Italian and fluency. (Maximum 10 students). Consolidation classes: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced Consolidation classes are bridging classes and are inserted whenever necessary, to ensure that a smooth transition occurs between levels. Cinema e Conversazione (High Intermediate/ Advanced Course) Thjs course will look at excerpts from various Italian films with a common theme which will be followed by analysis and discussions.

4 Advanced Conversation : Contemporary Italy Ongoing Course An entry point for students with a good knowledge of grammar who wish to improve fluency. Whilst grammar is revised these classes are designed to engage students in oral language. Topics are wide ranging and may include film, theatre, culture, literature, Italian cuisine, and indeed all things Italian in contemporary Italy. (maximum: 10 students) All Things Italian: High Intermediate/ Advanced Conversation An entry point for students with a good knowledge of grammar who wish to improve fluency. Whilst grammar is revised this class is designed to engage students in oral language with wide ranging topics including film, theatre, culture, literature, Italian cuisine and indeed all things Italian. (maximum: 10 students) Italian through Modern History of Italy 1860s (Advanced) This course is aimed at adults who have a firm grasp of the Italian language. Lessons would comprise of an exposition by the teacher followed by a second part of group discussion. The aim is to increase students proficiency with the Italian language. (maximum: 10 students) (no second class) Contemporary Italian On-line Journalism and its language (Advanced)The course focuses on the most important trends and written characteristics of Italian contemporary on-line journalism, delving into its peculiar traits and development within the larger frame of global journalism, thus providing the opportunity to analytically explore contemporary Italian social, political and cultural issues. The reading and commenting of selected articles will be corroborated by a selection critical sources that illustrate the vocabulary and distinctive rhetorical traits of modern Italian on-line journalism Italian through Art History (Advanced) This course is aimed at adults who have a firm grasp of the Italian language. Lessons would comprise of an exposition by the teacher followed by a second part of group discussion. The aim is to increase students proficiency with the Italian language. (maximum: 10 students) Italian through Italian Literature (Advanced) This course in which the students will learn Italian language by reading, analysing and discussing extracts of well known Italian novels. Including texts from the end of `800s; "I Promessi Sposi", "Pinocchio" to contemporary authors. It will also focus on the change of the Italian language through these classic to modern books (novels). (Second classes are available at the beginning of Week 3. 5 Concessions Enrolment Information and Conditions Concession fees are available for students, pensioners, those in receipt of unemployment benefits or in the case of more than one family member or friend enrolling in a same course at the same time. After attending classes for one term (10 weeks) students continuing with studies are also eligible for discount. Enrolment Send completed enrolment form with payment. All enrolees will receive a receipt and a confirmation of their place in their course. A minimum of 6 paying students per course is required Payment Payment in advance is required to secure a place in any course. Please phone if you have not received notification within one week of enrolling. May be made by cheque, cash or credit card. Payment of course fees must be made by the first week of class. Refunds Applications for refunds will only be considered if they are received at least two full days prior to commencement of course and in writing. Cancellation of classes. Courses may be cancelled and full fee refunded or postponed at the discretion of Co.As.It. Postponement A replacement teacher will be sought due to teacher absence and if this is unsuccessful the session may be made up in consultation with the teacher. Every attempt will be made to notify students of changes in timetabled classes. Student Conduct Student code of conduct applies. (See library staff for a copy of policy)

Resources such as CDs, DVDs, (with or without subtitles) language kits, novels etc., will increase the exposure to the richness of the Italian language.
