1 [This course has multiple sections.] My Section: Instructor: Time: Location: Office: Office Hrs: Course Content and Objectives: This is the first of two elementary Italian courses, ideal for someone with no prior knowledge of the language. This semester you will learn the basic skills of speaking, reading and understanding Italian. By the end of this course, you will be able to talk about student life, your interests, your family, shopping, and technology, with reference to both present and past experiences. You will develop a rich vocabulary, including phrases to use when studying or traveling in Italy. You will learn a lot about life in Italy, including the cultures of food, sports, education, and family. You will complete Chapters 1-4 of Sentieri, which you will continue to use in Ital 102 and Ital 203. The goal by the end of the course is to understand the logic of the language and to have simple conversations in Italian relating to basic themes of everyday life. Course Requirements: You are expected to keep up with the assigned readings, complete all homework with care, take quizzes and exams on the scheduled dates, participate actively, and show respect for your classmates and instructor. Please read the course policies (p. 2) with care, initialing each one to indicate your understanding. Please sign the sheet at the bottom and turn it into your instructor by the 3rd day of class. Extracurricular Cultural Events: In addition to our academic program, we seek ways to engage students outside of class. The following are a list of extracurricular events that we encourage you to participate in according to your aptitude, time and interest. Very few of these events are mandatory. Italian Film Series: a series of Italian Films (w/ subtitles) shown in the UG Library. Schedule posted on Sakai. Tavola italiana: an Italian conversation hour for beginning and intermediate levels. Schedule posted on Sakai. CIAO conversation hour: a weekly conversation hour for advanced students, hosted by the Italian Club. Italian Club: a UNC student organization devoted to promoting interest in Italian language and culture. To join, please subscribe to the listserv Italianclub and attend the first meeting. Italian Honor Society: If you perform well in your language class, you may be invited to join the National Italian Honor Society; you will be honored at our awards ceremony and the merit will be noted on your transcript. Italian Literary Contest: an annual literary contest with recognition and cash prizes. Sakai Italian For Fun: You are enrolled in a special Sakai site called Italian for Fun, in which you can discover additional opportunities to practice your Italian or to learn about study, work, and travel opportunities in Italy. Italian at UNC: The Department of Romance Studies offers Italian courses from beginning to advanced levels, as well as a major and minor with courses in advanced language, literature, culture, and film. The Italian major and minor are good choices for careers in International Relations & Business, Journalism,Communications, and Education. 2 ITAL 101 Course Requirements: Read carefully, initial each blank and sign at the bottom, confirming your willingness to respect these policies and be held accountable to them. Turn this page into your instructor by the 3rd day of class. Attendance Initials Each absence after the first three will result in an automatic deduction of 2 points from your total participation grade at the end of the semester. (3 tardies or leaving class early = 1 absence). The only excused absences are those involving a sporting event (if you are a member of a team) or a written note from a doctor explaining why you are physically unable to attend class (not simply a note confirming a visit to Student Health). Participation Initials Your participation grade will be evaluated by several criteria: coming to class prepared (having read the assigned pages and done the assigned exercises before class); speaking only Italian during class; volunteering often; working well in groups. The more you are absent, the less you will be able to meet these goals. Absences will drive this grade down considerably, even before the automatic deductions are taken. Homework Initials All homework should be written legibly or typed. We do not accept late assignments. Your homework assignments will be related to the grammatical and lexical content of the chapters and will include online exercises and handouts, journalwriting, blog or Twitter-posts, & attendance at 1 Italian cultural event. Special Projects Initials Special projects are opportunities to apply your language skills to assignments that are slightly larger in scope than daily homework. These projects give you the opportunity to assimilate lexical and grammatical skills from each chapter and to delve into one of the cultural themes found within. The projects this semester include three oral exams (a pronunciation evaluation, a monologue and a role-play), four temi (or essays to be written in class), and a group prezi project. Quizzes, Midterm and Final Initials 5 quizzes, a midterm, and a final are scheduled this semester. Note the dates. No make-ups are allowed. Your instructor may also give small vocabulary and grammar quizzes, which will count as homework grades. Professionalism Initials Students should come to class with a positive attitude. Cell phones should be turned off. There should be no use of electronic devices for any purpose other than meeting the lesson s objectives. Each failure to respect this policy will result in an automatic point deduction from the participation grade. When you communicate with your instructor, please use language appropriate for a professional relationship. Honor Code Initials All students should respect the rules of the Honor Code ( When doing all homework, you must work alone. You may not get help from classmates, tutors, or online translators. Violations are easy to detect. If you do not respect this policy, your instructor will carry out one of the sanctions outlined above. You will sign a pledge on your quizzes, exams, and grading rubrics, confirming your adherence to this policy. Achieving Your Goals Initials Because language learning is cumulative, it is essential for your success in this class that you review old material (grammatical and lexical content) as you learn the new. You will be held accountable for it. 3 How to do well in this class: Do not miss homework, quiz or exam deadlines. No make-ups: zero Avoid online translators! Attend class and speak Italian all the time, using the vocabulary appropriate to your level. Do not worry about making mistakes when you speak. The more you practice, the more fluent you will become. If you are having trouble with Italian grammar, buy a copy of English Grammar for Students of Italian or consult it in the UG Library Reserves section. If you need extra help outside of class, visit any Italian instructor during his/her office hours and/or check the Resources folder of your Sakai page for information about getting help from a tutor. Use flashcards for learning new vocabulary and grammar points as soon as possible. Review material from previous chapters constantly as you learn the new. Use the Sakai Supersite as a resource for self-review, and let your instructor know if you need extra exercises. Learn as much about Italian culture as you can, and have fun! 10 Ital 101 Orale 2 - Genealogical Project For this project, you will do some research on the history of your family. For your sources, you may interview a relative or consult one of the websites listed below. Guidelines: Conduct your research on the history of your family. Go back at least three generations (great grandparents). Interview a family member who has done genealogical research and/or do such research yourself on a website like Ancesters.com. Gemeabios.com, or Accessgenealogy.com. Draw a family tree (albero genealogico), like the one found on p , Sentieri. Label at least eight members of this tree, using the Italian family names in addition to the proper names. Write a brief monologue which you will submit to the Sentieri Voiceboard on the same day you submit your family tree. In this monologue, you should include answers to the following questions: Da dove viene la tua famiglia principalmente (paesi, regioni, città particolari)? 11 Ital 101 Orale 3 - Role-Play [General Pronunciation + Vocab + Grammar + Fluency] For this oral test, you will create a dialogue between a student and a shop keeper in Florence, Italy. You will record this dialogue on the Sentieri Supersite voiceboard, where your instructor will listen to it and evaluate it. Guidelines: Read the prompt below carefully and ask your instructor if you have any questions about the assignment. Construct a dialogue including all of the components listed below. Pay special attention to both grammatical accuracy and proper word choice. This will typically require multiple drafts. Ask your instructor if you have any doubts about the words or constructions you have chosen. 12 ITAL 101 TEMA Nome Grade /100 The tema is an opportunity to develop fluency in communicating ideas in Italian. It will be graded on the basis of content, organization and clarity, variety and accuracy of vocabulary, and accurate use of the grammatical concepts you have learned so far. Be thoughtful as you write, and use simple sentence structures to convey your ideas. Leave time to proofread before submitting! The following are categories used for assigning numerical grades. MOLTO BENE punti: You will achieve a grade in this range if the following criteria apply to your essay: - Follows instructions - Adequate content (meets minimum word count) and minimal repetition - Good organization of ideas including logical transitions - Uses vocabulary appropriate to topic and level - Clear and comprehensible - Accurate use of grammar for this level, i.e. 10 errors or fewer relating to grammatical topics already covered BENE punti: You will achieve a grade in this range if most of the following criteria apply to your essay: - Follows instructions - Adequate content (meets or is just short of minimum word count) and minimal repetition - Some small but persistent problems with vocabulary usage, comprehensibility, and/or organization of ideas - Inconsistent attention to grammar i.e. 15 errors or fewer relating to grammatical topics already covered SUFFICIENTE punti: You will achieve a grade in this range if several of the following criteria apply to your essay: - Does not follow all instructions - Inadequate content (falls too far below minimum word count) and/or excessive repetition - Some problems with organization (the flow is disjointed and choice of statements seems arbitrary) - Too many problems with inappropriate word usage and inaccurate grammar (over 15 errors) - The problems outlined above are interfering with comprehensibility INACCETTABILE 0-69 punti: You will achieve a grade in this range if the following criteria apply to your essay - Does not follow instructions - Inadequate content (falls far below minimum word count) - Too many mistakes in grammar and vocabulary (over 25 errors) - Poorly organized and/or incomprehensible 12

13 Ital 101 Italian Culture Prezi Project This semester you will work in groups on a creative project involving research on an aspect of Italian culture of interest to you. After researching your topic, you will design a presentation of it using Prezi, a tool like powerpoint, which allows you greater flexibility in integrating different media into your slides. You can find the prezi platform at www. prezi.com. If Prezi is new to you, check out these tutorials: (Why Prezi) (How to use it) Guidelines: 1. Choose the right topic! You may begin by choosing a general aspect of Italian culture to research (sports, politics, art, etc.). Then pick a more narrow aspect of that topic (e.g. a specific artist, public figure or cultural icon; a specific sporting event or media topic, a current controversy, etc. Choose a topic that will allow you to balance the factual details with larger ideas or connections, so that your classmates will be able to enjoy your show and come away with some general idea of the topic, even if they cannot remember all the details. 2. Each group should submit to their instructor a few sentences describing the project by the date specified on the syllabus. (You may write in English). 3. Do your research using a combination of English and Italian websites, articles, books, etc. 4. When you get ready to compose the textual information, make sure you take all the precautions necessary to avoid committing plagiarism. This means citing all information that reflects opinions, rather than common knowledge. Even more importantly, this means using your own words (and not those from an Italian website or an online translator) when composing your points. Please remember this. It is not difficult to recognize writing that is not your own; consequences for violating the Honor Code are severe: 5. As you develop your Prezi presentation, use a good mix of verbal and visual content (also songs, video clips, voiceovers, etc., if you like). Use simple written language that your classmates will understand. If you need to use some technical vocabulary or simply some new words (this is unavoidable), please provide definitions for them on the slide, either in Italian or in English. 6. Each student s contribution to the project should represent an equivalent of 80 words of verbal content (represented visually or through video or audio clips and not including English glosses). 7. At the end of your presentation, please include (on the last slide) a full bibliography of all the resources (books, magazine articles, websites, etc.) that you consulted. 8. When your presentation is complete, please save it on the Prezi site, and be sure to make assign it public access. You will post the link to it in the course Sakai site under Resources (choose your instructor and then the Prezi folder). Give the document the name of your project. 9. After the projects are submitted, each student will have one week to read and take notes on three other projects. Please come up with at least one question for each group whose project you read. 10. On the date specified on the syllabus, your instructor will divide you up into groups made up of students representing different Prezi projects. You will share some of the interesting facts that you learned, and you will also each be expected to ask at least one question to a classmate about his/her project. 11.
