1 SYLLABUS FOR ITA Spring 2015 COURSE: ITA 101 Spring 2015 MWF Room: 242 Marano Campus Center Joseph Alessia: Tel ; alessia@oswego.edu Office Hours: W & F(3:00pm 3:30pm) and by appointment Office: Marano Campus Center 251 REQUIRED TEXTS: Julia Cozzarelli, Sentieri. Attraverso l Italia Contemporanea (Vista Higher Learning) Textbook and workbook COURSE OBJECTIVES. To learn Italian as a communicative skill and to achieve optimum proficiency in the language. In addition to speaking. the course is designed to develop the ability to read, write and understand the language. LEARNING ITALIAN. Class time will be devoted to various types of functional exercises from the main text, to conversation, interaction, and other classroom activities designed to stimulate communication. To learn the language and to achieve a good grade, you need to come to class prepared. If you have questions or need help, don t hesitate to see the instructor. ATTENDANCE. Class attendance is required and daily participation is essential in view of the course objectives explained above. In fact, 10% of your final grade is based on your oral work in class. You are allowed three absences during the semester for minor illnesses and other problems; after that, each absence will lower your class work by 1 point. Justified absences for health reasons will not count against you provided you bring an infirmary slip signed by the attending physician. EXAMS. You will have two one- hour exams and a final (2 hours) which will test writing skills and reading comprehension. FINAL GRADE. The point distribution used in determining your final grade will be as follows: Attendance: 5% Class work: 5% Workbook exercises: 10% Written exams: 45% Final written: 35% A C A C B D B D
2 B D C E 59 and below PACE OF THE COURSE. The material covered in this course has remained the same over the years and it is comparable to other language courses in the Department. Some students expect the same pace of instruction they followed in high school, forgetting that they are taking a college course. Please keep in mind that, generally speaking, three years of language instruction in high school are equivalent to one year at Oswego State University and at other four- year colleges across the country. WORKBOOK. The workbook contains various forms of exercises designed to reinforce the material you are learning. Please refer to the attached list of weekly assignments. As indicated in the syllabus, you are not required to do the oral exercises. The exercises are to be handed in to the instructor at the end of each chapter; they will be corrected, graded, and handed back to you. Please note the Workbook assignments will not be accepted after the date indicated in the syllabus or by your instructor. VOCABULARY. Since the objective of the course is to use Italian from the start, it is essential that you memorize at least the most common vocabulary found at the end of each unit. The vocabulary may come at the end, but it is one of the most important sections of each lesson. TWO FINAL NOTES. 1. No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom. 2. You are urged to come to class on time, habitual lateness will lower your grade for class participation. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES. If you have a disabling condition which may interfere with your ability to successfully complete this course, please contact the office of Disability Services. INTELLECTUAL INTEGRITY STATEMENT: SUNY Oswego is committed to Intellectual Integrity. Any form of intellectual dishonesty is a serious concern and thereforeprohibited.the full policy can be found at htt:// Please keep in mind that this is a tentative syllabus. It can be modified according to the needs of the class. T: Texbook W: Workbook WEEK 1 January 26 Introduction Capitolo 1 2
