1 Instructor: Dora Bonaventura, MA ITALIAN XL3 Online Course Syllabus Department of Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences and Health Sciences (310) Quarter: Spring 2013 Start Date: 04/01/2013 Days/Time: 45 hours total, 5 hours per week asynchronous in a virtual classroom for 9 weeks Other Info: 4 Units Course Description This course continues a sequence of three courses (XL1, XL 2, XL 3) covering first year college-level Italian using a communicative, thematically based approach. This approach develops speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, as well as an understanding of the cultures of the Italian-speaking world. The program consists of 5 modules, each of which thoroughly integrates vocabulary, grammar, and cultural insights with themes related to personal experiences, Italian lifestyle, and travel. Activities allow students to focus on meaningful real-life communication while practicing key grammatical structures. Instruction emphasizes the present and past tense of regular and major irregular verbs, as well as the building of a basic conversational vocabulary. Students must complete all exercises to receive the maximum benefit from the program. Conducted entirely in Italian. You will learn how to talk about people, family relations, your likes and dislikes, work and leisure activities, the weather, clothes, sports, travel, food, and your daily routine, all in Italian! You will also be introduced to the culture and geography of the Italian-speaking world. To immerse you in the language from the beginning, the class will be conducted almost entirely in Italian. You are not expected to understand every word, but rather to follow the main ideas by paying attention to the context. You will find that your comprehension improves as the course progresses. New structures and vocabulary will be presented as they fit into the chapter themes. Required Texts: - Oggi in Italia, Merlonghi, Merlonghi (Ninth Edition), custom text - Oggi in Italia, Merlonghi, Merlonghi (Ninth Edition), SAM (workbook). Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: Use oral activities to interact in Italian Paraphrase information found in short reading and cultural notes section Recall and use vocabulary associated with daily student life Construct grammatically correct statements with verbs as well as adjectives Restate information in listening activity sections Demonstrate use of acceptable pronunciation Correctly use verbs 1

My role is to aid you by elaborating on the Italian concepts and principles presented in the text, introducing relevant real world examples, and being available to answer specific questions. Your role is to come to class prepared. Students are expected to come to class having studied the lesson and having finished the homework. You are required to have read the assigned chapter before class. The content of this course will probably require you to re-read certain chapters in order to grasp the concepts covered. Students are encouraged to ask questions. The only wrong question is an unasked question; if asking that question would have improved your understanding. I will attempt to answer all student questions except when it is apparent that the student has not read the material. I am also available during office hours, via telephone, Skype and . Participation: Active class participation is expected. We will have a synchronous class once a week (Wednesday OR Thursday) at 6:30PM-8:00PM. If you miss a class you will be able to watch the recorded class at any time before Sunday each week. Students are expected to do their best to participate. Do not let the fear of making errors keep you from speaking. Remember that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Try to communicate through the discussion boards and synchronous classes, your classmates and I will understand. Ask questions. Follow up on the comments of others. And finally, it is more important to concentrate on your own progress than comparing your performance to that of your classmates. Requirements - Students must complete all exercises to receive the maximum benefit from the program. The students are expected to dedicate at least 6 hours to the online activities. 2

3 - Homework: it will be assigned at the end of each class and corrected at the beginning of the next class. Every assignment must include the following: your name, my name, the date, and the page and exercise numbers. Therefore, we will conduct ourselves as we would in a college environment. Each class session will be treated as an important part of the course. Each of you is expected to participate in the discussion board, and being respectful to your classmate and your Professor. If a situation arises that consistently causes you to be absent, please contact me. Honor Code & Code of academic conduct Honest and ethical students are protected in this class. The Honor Code and Code of Academic Integrity, printed in the General Catalog, remind students of their responsibility to behave honestly and ethically. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with these codes. Please be extremely careful that you do not engage in any behavior that could even be construed as cheating. Outside of class, students are allowed to study together. However, copying another student's homework is not acceptable. If the instructor determines that students have relied too heavily on each other in preparing homework or any other project, the students may be assigned no credit. Future occurrences could result in 3

4 academic disciplinary action. During an exam, talking to another student, looking at another student's paper, using a calculator w/business functions, using cheat notes, etc. are not permitted. I will vigorously pursue any suspected cases of plagiarism, cheating or other violations of the Code of Academic Conduct, whether completed or merely attempted. Even a first offense of academic dishonestly will result in a score of zero on that exam, and an Academic Dishonesty Report form will be filed with the Campus Disciplinarian. Exam policy Login on time for exams or risk missing them. Once a test or exam has begun, students may not log out until the exam is completed and submitted. There are no make up exams.
