1 1 Italian 110S/120S: INTENSIVE ELEMENTRY ITLIN Yale University, Summer 2016 Insegnanti: Prof.ssa Siobhan Quinlan Prof.ssa Simona Lorenzini Office: Wall St. room 412 Office: Wall St. room Prof.ssa Giulia ardillo Prof.ssa nna Marra Office: Wall St. room 410 Office: Wall St. room ourse escription: Intensive Italian 110/120 will help develop the ability to communicate in spoken and written Italian by providing an introduction to Italian Grammar and varied aspects of contemporary Italian culture. Required texts: 1. ranciforte & i Fabio. Parliamo italiano! 4 th edition ISN Parliamo italiano! Student ctivities Manual 4 th edition ISN M.L. anfi, S. Gavelli. elitto in piazza del campo ISN good Italian/English dictionary. paper version required. ourse Outline: 1. Italian immersion: This course is conducted entirely in Italian. This is an essential part of our curriculum and it is vital that you respect this rule. Repeated use of English in class will result in the lowering of your grade. 2. ttendance: lass attendance is mandatory. ue to the intensive nature of this course, missing a single class session is equivalent to missing 3-5 days of normal semester instruction and, therefore, cannot be allowed. Your second absence will lower your final grade, and multiple absences will jeopardize your spot in the program and potentially send you home from Siena at your own expense. Tardiness: fter 5 minutes, you will be marked late. Three tardies will count as an absence. eing 15 minutes late will count as an absence. Long story short: be on time. 3. Grade reakdown: 1. Participation/Quizzes = 15% 2. Oral Presentations (2) = 10% 3. Workbook & Lab Manual = 10% 4. ompositions = 20% 5. Tests = 25% 6. Final Exam = 20%

2 2 N.. The Italian epartment also has a very important rule to definitely keep in mind: failure to receive a passing grade on any one component of the final grade will result in an F for the course as a whole. 4. Participation: Your participation grade is based on your attentive and enthusiastic participation in class. Your presence, behavior, and attention during class trips in Siena and outside will be reflected in this part of your grade. 5. Oral Presentations: You will give two oral presentations during your time in Siena. Specifics of the assignments will be provided by your instructors. 6. Workbook: There are three sections: a Workbook, a Lab Manual, and a Video Manual. You are only responsible for the Workbook section. This work beyond the classroom, especially while in New Haven, is absolutely essential to your Italian proficiency, eventual fluency, and experience in Siena. This work will be checked daily. 7. ompositions: Each week you will write a small composition. Rough drafts will be due on Mondays; rewritten compositions are due on Fridays. The composition assignments are designed to be appropriate for your level of Italian. s such, all writing can and must be your own: do not translate from English. Evidence of using a translator or some other shortcut will result in a grade of zero for that composition. 8. Tests: There will be 5 unit tests that will cover two chapters each. Your lowest test grade will be dropped. 9. Final Exam: The final exam is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 at 9:30 a.m. There will be Oral Presentations on July 22. Please note this date when making travel plans. You may not make up the final exam or presentation due to travel plans. 10. Laptops and Other Technology: Laptops and tablets are not permitted in class unless they are part of an accommodation approved by the Office of isability. ell phone use and texting in class are extremely disrespectful and will not be tolerated. 11. Plagiarism and academic honesty: In keeping with the principles of integrity, students are expected to be honest in all of their academic work. cademic honesty means, most fundamentally, that any work you present as your own must in fact be your own work and not that of another. This includes using online translation programs such as Google Translate or translating online material, such as Wikipedia entries, from English into Italian, or excerpting Wikipedia or Wikipedia.it entries without proper citation. It also includes sharing work or jointly completed work (except as authorized in advance). ll violations of these principles will be reported to the Program irector and may result in a failing grade for the course and additional disciplinary action by the university. Programma del lavoro: Please note that the work indicated on the syllabus must be prepared prior to arriving in class. For example, you should prepare Unità 1, sections and on May 30, before coming to class on May 31. Maggio 30 envenuti [welcome]; description of course Unità preliminare: Per cominciare : Le presentazioni, : I saluti, : L'alfabeto, : I numeri
