2 conference overview Program Goal The purpose of this program is to provide current information on the diagnosis, treatment and management of asthma. The keynote and breakout sessions will allow conference attendees to learn about and discuss best practices and effective education strategies, tools and policies to improve health outcomes for people with asthma. Audience Pediatricians, family practice physicians, allergists, pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, school nurses, physician assistants, asthma educators, Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES), medical assistants, respiratory therapists, peer educators, and others interested in asthma care and management. Posters and Exhibits There will be an opportunity for organizations, individuals, students, and groups to present their research and projects to conference attendees during exhibit and break times. Learning Objectives At the end of the program, participants will be able to: Discuss how to successfully implement best practices in asthma care and management, including how to address environmental triggers Identify innovative strategies to improve health outcomes Integrate clinical, environmental and selfmanagement approaches for improved asthma management Locate community resources and support to help with asthma management in schools, homes and the community Please note: 50% conference registration discount for poster presenters. Limited scholarships are available. Poster presenters are responsible for bringing their own pins, poster, etc. Easels will be provided. 4 about the keynote & panel speakers Lauren A. Smith, MD, MPH is the Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, where she provides senior clinical leadership for programs, planning and policy. An Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine, she served as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Inpatient Unit at Boston Medical Center and was a pediatric hospitalist for 10 years. Dr. Smith s research career has focused on childhood health disparities and the implication of public polices for child health and wellbeing. In addition to numerous peer reviewed papers, she has authored reports on the health impact of affordable housing and energy costs as examples of the effects of public policy on health. She served as a William T. Grant Health Policy Fellow in the office of the Massachusetts Speaker of the House and as a member of the Massachusetts Commission to End Racial Disparities in Health. Her public service also included work as a policy analyst for the Department of Health and Human Services. She completed her education and training at Harvard College, the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. She completed her residency and chief residency at Children's Hospital, Boston and her fellowship in General Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center. Jean Zotter, JD is Asthma Director for the Asthma Prevention and Control Program at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. She oversees all programmatic and administrative activities of this program including the Asthma Disparities Initiative that supports local interventions and policies in regions of the state with a higher burden of asthma. Previously, she served as the Executive Director of both the Boston Urban Asthma Coalition and the Massachusetts Asthma Advocacy Partnership, advocacy organizations with a focus on improving asthma and the environment in Boston and the state. Since 1997, the Boston Urban Asthma Coalition has focused its advocacy on improving housing and school environments, eliminating school diesel bus emissions, and ensuring all families have access to quality health care. The Massachusetts Asthma Advocacy Partnership started in 2007 and focused on building the capacity of local organizations to tackle asthma. Paula Smith, MBA is the Director of the Southern New Hampshire Area Health Education Center, where she oversees the overall direction of the AHEC. Working with the Local Advisory Committee, Paula develops and implements a variety of programs which support community health professionals, identifies topics for continuing education, and initiates partnerships with academic and community organizations. Prior to her work at SNHAHEC, Paula was the Regional Services Coordinator at the New England Community Health Center Association. Her responsibilities included conference planning, data analysis and building collaborations among groups in the six New England states. She is a member of the New Hampshire Asthma Collaborative and oversees southern New Hampshire s Better Choices, Better Health program, which is the state-based Chronic Disease Self- Management Program developed by Stanford University. Paula is also currently participating in coaching microsystem process improvements related to enhancing the medical home with community health centers. Nancy Sutton MS, RD is the Program Manager of the Asthma Control Program in the Rhode Island Department of Health. She received a Bachelor s Degree in Food Science and Nutrition from the University of Rhode Island and a Master s Degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Vermont. Ms. Sutton has 23 years experience working in public health. In that time, she has focused on public and professional education and policy change to improve dietary habits to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Currently, Ms. Sutton is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions in the surveillance, communication, environmental, community, and health care systems to improve asthma outcomes through partnerships, advocacy, and health equity.
