Medical Assistant Online Refresher Course Are you a credentialed medical assistant? Do you need to become one? In order to meet meaningful use requirements, medical assistants need to be credentialed to be eligible to enter medication, radiology, and laboratory orders into electronic health records. One of the ways to achieve that credentialing is to take a certification examination. This MA Refresher Course will prepare you to sit for any one of four exams. You can take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification Examination sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologist exam for Registered Medical Assistants (RMA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) exam for National Certified Medical Assistants (NCMA) or the National Health Career Association (NHA) exam for Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). The curriculum includes: language access law, the role of the interpreter, the protocol of interpretation, the national code of ethics & standards of practice, memory development, vocabulary development in both languages, impact of culture on interpretation, resources for interpreters and information about the national certification and more. 3 Southern and Northern NH AHEC Community Health Worker Course 7 day-8 hour class Manchester Health Department, 1528 Elm Street, Manchester, NH September 15, 22, 19, October 6, 20, 27, and November 10, :00am-4:30pm As a nation and a state, we are struggling to address the transformation of the health care system as we move to a model of team based care. One strategy that other states have used to engage communities and assist with navigating services is to promote the Community Health Worker (CHW) model. Train to become a CHW in New Hampshire and incorporate your new knowledge into team based care opportunities offered in hospitals, medical practices, community health centers and social service settings. Target Audience There are a variety of roles and numerous titles that fall under the CHW umbrella: Outreach Worker, Lay Health Advisor, Health Promoter, Patient Advocate, community health advisor, family advocate, liaison, peer counselor, patient navigator, health interpreter and public health aide. The purpose of the 1 ½ day institute is to provide an overview of COPD for healthcare and health education professionals who provide or are preparing to provide, selfmanagement education for individuals diagnosed with COPD. The training includes practical information to be used when working with this population. CEUs provided. Million Hearts and Blood Pressure Control Lunch and Learns Skills to Enhance Blood Pressure Control: This session specifically focuses on blood pressure control. Sometimes referred to as the silent killer, blood pressure is important because patients can suddenly experience a heart attack or stroke due to high blood pressure. The Joint National Committee released the new JNC 8 guidelines in December Learn about the new guidelines and skills to help you assure correct blood pressure. By the end of the session participants will be able to: 1. List the 3 classifications of blood pressure. 2. Use correct patient positioning for an accurate BP measurement. 3. Select the correct size BP cuff for accurate measurement. 4. Identify at least 3 lifestyle modifications that you can discuss with patients who have prehypertension or hypertension Million Hearts The goal of the Million Hearts Campaign is to work together to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by By the end of the session participants will be able to: 1. 6 The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation has awarded the Southern NH AHEC a grant to support the Better Choices, Better Health program in NH. The funding will enhance and maintain our capacity to offer and evaluate Chronic Disease Self- Management workshops. As part of the funding we will be able to support a new leader training as well as a lending library for books. Stanford s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program: Better Choices, Better Health Do you have patients with a chronic disease? Are you looking for resources to help them take better care of themselves? The NH CDSMP Network is offering Stanford s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program: Better Choices, Better Health as a resource to providers and residents of New Hampshire. The program gives patients with chronic diseases and the people who care for them an opportunity to learn how to put life back into their lives. 8 Film Screening Opportunity! Who Am I Going to Be? African Youth Building Lives in NH What challenges do you think you would face if you suddenly found yourself starting over in a new culture? What in your cultural heritage could you draw on for strength in challenging circumstances? The film Who Am I Going To Be? explores the constellation of challenges that African youth face as they build new lives in NH. Learning to navigate school and community expectations, adjusting to shifting family roles, and coping the aftermath of conflict and trauma are parts of their path. They are made to feel other at school. They naturally learn English faster than parents ushering in issues of respect, relationship, and family authority. This film, produced in 2014 in NH, explores the formation of identity and belonging among teens who have emigrated to New Hampshire, and asks viewers to think about their own cultural identities, perspectives, and prerogatives. Target Audience: Youth services providers, teachers, health care providers and others interested in learning more about the cultural fabric of NH Cost: There is no cost to host a screening. Donations are accepted. Learning Objectives: -Discuss some of the ways that family roles shift in immigrant families in NH. -Identify some specific challenges that African teens face as they work to integrate into the US. -Describe resilience factors that teens draw on to survive and thrive in a new culture. Host a 90 minute session-including a 43 minute film and a panel discussion!
