1 20th Annual Medical Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect: What Medical Professionals Need to Know to Keep Children Safe May 13 & 14, 2015 Bavarian Inn Lodge Frankenmuth, MI Keynote Speaker: Dr. Daniel Lindberg This is a FREE conference to all with CME credits offered for medical professionals only. Sponsored by the Michigan Department of Human Services Medical Advisory Committee, in cooperation with Helen DeVos Children s Hospital
2 Conference Objective: The objective of the conference is to provide physicians and other health care providers with a broad range of practical information to help diagnose and treat child abuse and neglect. Specifically, participants will have: 1. Increased knowledge regarding recognizing and making the diagnosis of child physical abuse; 2. The ability to identify the needs (medical and social) of siblings of suspected child abuse victims; 3. Enhanced knowledge of the medical needs of infants and children who (may) have been exposed to drugs; 4. The ability to list the various ways to test for STIs in children; 5. Improved understanding of the Child Protection Law and mandatory reporting of Child Abuse/Neglect and a better understanding of what happens after a report (3200) is filed with CPS; 6. Increased knowledge regarding what constitutes medical neglect. 7. The ability to identify children at risk for being victims of human trafficking and how to approach them. Learning Outcome: Participants will leave this conference with enhanced knowledge regarding the various aspects of child abuse/neglect and improved ability to identify and manage cases of suspected abuse/neglect. Target Audience: Physicians and other medical providers in a variety of practice settings who examine and treat children. Continuing Medical Education: Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 3 Featured Keynote Speaker DANIEL LINDBERG, M.D. Dr. Lindberg is an emergency medicine physician and child abuse consultant at the University Of Colorado School of Medicine and Children's Hospital in Colorado. As the National Principal Investigator of the Using Liver Transaminases to Recognize Abuse (ULTRA) and Examining Siblings To Recognize Abuse (ExSTRA) research networks, Dr. Lindberg has led two of the largest, prospective networks to develop best-practice guidelines to screen for physical abuse.
