E 35 (flexible working considered) OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Head of Major Gifts Fundraising is responsible for shaping and delivering our strategy to raise funds from major donors, trusts and foundations, statutory funders and corporate partners. The role is accountable for delivering ambitious targets and for ensuring our major gifts programme is compliant with regulation, Amnesty International UK (AIUK) policy and protects our brand. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Strategy 1.1 Work with the Fundraising Leadership Team on the development of fundraising strategy to meet the resource needs of AIUK and contribute to the financial and engagement growth of the global movement. 1.2 Work with the Director of Fundraising to lead the development and implementation of the major gifts strategy for AIUK, to secure funds from major donors, trusts and foundations, statutory funders and corporates. 1.3 Lead on the development of ambitious but achievable major gifts fundraising projections (income, investment) for the strategic plan period and work with the Director of Fundraising to secure approval of these. 1.4 Provide leadership and direction to AIUK s major gifts fundraising programme to meet objectives and target key performance measures. 1.5 Work with the Fundraising Leadership Team to embed a culture for fundraising success and support for fundraising within the wider organisation and international movement. Foster an ambitious, high-performing and target-driven culture within the major gifts team, ensuring that both financial and non-financial KPIs are met. 1
2 1.6 Provide advice and information to the Fundraising Leadership Team and to Major Gifts Fundraising colleagues on major gifts strategy, regulation, best practice, and current developments and thinking in the sector. 1.7 Actively contribute to AIUK s Leadership Team and Fundraising Leadership Team, taking a cross-organisational view of the organisation s operations and collaborating effectively with management colleagues from all teams and departments. 2. Operational and resource management 2.1. Provide line management support and direction to direct reports, ensuring that each manager is accountable for their unit and programme and is performing to clear objectives and expectations. 2.2 Lead the Major Gifts Fundraising team in the development of annual operational plans, budgets and performance measures to achieve the major gifts fundraising strategy. Be accountable to the Director of Fundraising for the achievement of these. 2.3 Develop, manage and monitor the annual major gifts fundraising budget and donor pipeline projections, providing clear and timely reforecasts and management information, using this to guide decision-making and investment. 2.4 Provide direction and support to the Prospect Researcher to ensure a regular and productive flow of prospects into the major gifts pipeline. 2.5 Work closely with other teams / as part of project groups to identify new opportunities for fundraising and to ensure integration across agreed priority campaigns and other cases for support / propositions. Lead the development of cases for support, translating our operational and strategic plans into compelling fundraising propositions for use with major gift funders. 2.6 Working with international colleagues, further develop our understanding of Amnesty s international work, assisting the Trust, Corporate and Statutory unit (within the team) to identify, secure and grant manage institutional funding. 2.7 Identify the operational risks related to major gifts fundraising; design and implement appropriate controls and assurances. 2.8 Ensure that the major gifts programme and processes are compliant with AI / AIUK policy and procedure guidelines, values and with all relevant regulation and legislation. 2.9 Continue the development of our middle value donor programme (Circle of Conscience) and develop a high level major donor giving programme, helping us to significantly increase major donor income by Take overall responsibility for the development and maintenance of an inspiring and effective stewardship programme for AIUK s major donors, trusts and corporate funders Be accountable for sign-off on all communications and events aimed at AIUK s existing and potential major gifts fundraising audiences. 2

Relationships and Networking 3.1 Network within the AI movement, building effective relationships with peers in other AI Sections and with the International Secretariat. 3.2 Bring innovation, improvement and opportunity to the major gifts programme by keeping up to date with developments in the sector and in the broader commercial / business environment. Develop and maintain an active network of industry peers. 3.2 Develop and manage appropriate, mutually beneficial and long-term relationships with external funding partners (potential and existing). 3.3 Develop and manage appropriate and productive relationships with external partners and suppliers. Ensure they act in accordance with AIUK policy and values and are compliant with fundraising regulation and guidance on best practice. 3.4 Represent and advocate for AIUK at relevant forums and organisations and ensure the organisation s values and aims are effectively communicated and represented. 4. Other 4.1 Take responsibility for your own health, safety and welfare, comply with AIUK health and safety policy and procedures, and not act in any way that compromises your safety or that of colleagues, partners or the public. 4.2 Deliver all aspects of this job description in accordance with AIUK s Equality and Diversity Policy. 4.3 Undertake any relevant duties or projects delegated by line management which are in line with the overall responsibilities of the post. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Head of Major Gifts Fundraising ESSENTIAL Experience Skills and Knowledge Values and behaviours CRITERIA Experience of working at a senior level in the marketing or fundraising sector. Experience of managing a successful major gifts fundraising programme to include at least two and ideally all of the following: high net worth individuals, trust and institutional funders, corporates. Experience of personally soliciting significant (5 or 6 figure) major gifts Successful experience of people and team management within multi-functional teams Experience of managing or undertaking effective prospect research Experience of managing and delivering on substantial income ( 1m plus) budgets; experience of managing expenditure budgets. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to act as main point of contact to the Director of Fundraising and other senior level people internally and externally. Strong negotiation skills; the ability to negotiate high value funding and corporate marketing contracts Leadership skills, able to provide vision, strategic direction and to motivating teams and individuals. Ability to think and plan strategically as well as to lead team in the successful and timely implementation of strategy. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide direction and support on the development of complex funding applications and funder reporting. Ability to make sound decisions in the best interests of AIUK and the global movement based on an evaluation of all the options and free from bias. Creative, with an ability to develop and implement innovative solutions and ideas. Ability to organise and prioritize a demanding personal workload and to set clear priorities for the major gifts team Ability to work and behave as part of a leadership team taking responsibility for and implementing corporate decisions. Excellent people skills with an outstanding ability to build effective relationships with funders and within the international Amnesty movement. A comprehensive knowledge of major gifts fundraising and the fundraising sector, including relevant regulation and legislation and its impact and application Understanding of, and commitment to help deliver, Amnesty International s aims and objectives. Commitment to deliver a major gifts programme that enhances the brand reputation of Amnesty International and complies with global and UK policy and relevant regulation and legislation. Understanding of, and commitment, to equality and diversity. DESIRABLE Experience Experience of developing cases for support within a campaigning-focused organisation / without tangible services. Experience of working both in the third sector, ideally within human rights or international development. 4
