2 Invitation University of Bergen (UiB) and GexCon AS share the responsibility of hosting the Tenth International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions (X ISHPMIE). The technical part of the conference takes place in Bergen on Tuesday to Friday June Participants may also sign up for an optional post-conference event on Saturday 14 June ISHPMIE is a meeting place for researchers and engineers in the field of process safety technology, from academia, industry and government, at various stages in their professional careers. About technical papers will be presented during the conference. The papers cover a wide range of topics related to industrial explosions, from fundamental research to applied engineering, and from in-depth theoretical, numerical and experimental studies to topical reviews. The total number of participants at X ISHPMIE, not including accompanying persons, is limited upwards to 250 by the size of the largest of the three available auditoriums. The expected number of participants is in the range X ISHPMIE is a non-profit event with participation from the global research community. Since the conference takes place in Norway, travel and accommodation costs alone will be relatively substantial for many participants, compared to previous events. Hence, in order to keep the total costs at a reasonable level, we hereby invite companies with a dedication to safety to sponsor the event. Table 1 summarizes the available options for sponsors and exhibitors. Please note that the contribution per sponsor indicated in Table 1 does not include the conference fee (for practical reasons, all participants must register through the conference webpage). The logos for all sponsors will be visible on the symposium webpage, including links to the sponsor s own webpage. Furthermore, the logos will be visible on the Symposium Program (hard copies) and the Proceedings (electronic). Exhibitors will be offered a small table in the mingling area outside the auditoriums on Tuesday- Thursday June. In addition, each exhibitor may bring one roll-up (typically 80 cm wide). Please note that the building is open to the public (university), and that there cannot be any exhibits on Friday 13 June due to a conflict with another arrangement in the same building. 4 About X ISHPMIE Previous events The meeting in Bergen on June 2014 is the Tenth International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions (X ISHPMIE). X ISHPMIE includes the Sixteenth International Colloquium on Dust Explosions. The series of colloquia on dust explosions started with the meeting in Baranow, Poland (1984), and continued with meetings in Jadwisin, Poland (1986), Szczyrk, Poland (1988), Porabka-Kozubnik, Poland (1990), Pultusk, Poland (1993), Shenyang, China (1994), Bergen, Norway (1996), Schaumburg, USA (1998), Tsukuba, Japan (2000), Bourges, France (2002), Krakow, Poland (2004), Halifax, Canada (2006), St. Petersburg, Russia (2008), Yokohama, Japan (2010), and Krakow, Poland (2012). The International Specialist Meeting on Fuel-Air Explosions, organized in Montreal, Canada in 1981, was followed up with a similar meeting in Bergen, Norway, in1996, but this time in conjunction with the Seventh International Colloquium on Dust Explosions. The two meetings in Bergen were organized under the name International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions (ISHPMIE), and the tradition of joint colloquia under the ISHPMIE banner continued through the symposia in Schaumburg (1998), Tsukuba (2000), Bourges (2002), Krakow (2004), Halifax (2006), St. Petersburg (2008), Yokohama (2010), Krakow (2012), and now back to Bergen for the Tenth ISHPMIE in June Venue The technical of X ISHPMIE will take place in the Faculty of Law at University of Bergen (UiB), generally referred to as Dragefjellet. Figure 1 shows the venue, and Figure 2 shows the location in a map of the city centre. It takes about ten minutes to walk from Dragefjellet to Torgallmenningen in the heart of the city centre. The Local Organizing Committee has reserved three auditoriums, all located in the same building, and with shared entrance to a common mingling area. This allows for three parallel, and it will be straightforward to pass from one auditorium to another. Schedule Table 2 shows a tentative timetable 1 for X ISHPMIE. Due to the public holiday on Monday 9 June, the traditional whole-day outing has been replaced with an optional post-conference event on Saturday 14 June, and a technical demonstration in the afternoon on Friday 13 June. By the end of 2013, the Local Organizing Committee had received a record number of 162 abstracts for the conference. This creates some challenges with respect to the schedule, and the final solution will probably entail with short presentations. The example in Table 2 includes three plenary lectures during shared and 126 presentations during three parallel, for a total of 129 presentations. It is possible to increase the number of presentations by reducing the time allocated for each presentation from 30 to 20 minutes. The final schedule will be prepared after the review process and the registration. 1 General comments to the tentative schedule outlined in Table 2: The registration desk at Dragefjellet will be open from 8 am on Tuesday morning, but participants can also register in the evening of Monday 9 June, most likely at Scandic Hotel Bergen City (Håkonsgaten 2-7). The official opening on Tuesday 10 June will start at 8:30 am, in the largest auditorium, followed by a plenary lecture. Since there is an official welcome reception in the evening, we plan to make the opening ceremony short. The coffee breaks will be in the staff/student restaurant, just outside the three auditoriums. We will organize lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, most likely at Scandic Hotel Bergen City or in the staff restaurant. The City Council of Bergen will host the Welcome Reception in Haakon s Hall (Figure 3). The official event takes place from 6 to 7 pm on Tuesday 10 June, and includes refreshments and a buffet of finger food. To conclude the first evening we will organize a guided tour through selected parts of Bergen, starting around 7:30 pm from the Haakon s Hall, passing the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site Bryggen (Figure 5), and ending in the city centre around 9 pm. The guides may find it convenient to introduce the route prior to departure from Haakon s Hall. The Local Organizing Committee organizes the traditional dinner for the International Organizing Committee in the evening on Wednesday 11 June. There will most likely also be an organized gathering for young researchers. The banquet will take place in the restaurant Bølgen and Moi on Thursday 12 June. Due to the relatively tight schedule, since Monday 9 June is a public holiday, the traditional whole-day outing is replaced by a shorter outing to GexCon s test site at Sotra on Friday 13 June. The post-conference event on Saturday 14 June will be the popular Norway in a Nutshell trip. This event will not be included in the regular registration fee, but participants can book the trip through the conference registration page. 5

7 Graphical profile Figure 4 illustrates the process of developing the new graphical profile for X ISHPMIE, starting from the old logo (used at two previous events). The new logo maintains several key elements from the original version, but with somewhat increased resemblance of the explosion pentagon. The Local Organizing Committee has reserved the domain for the conference web page. For practical reasons, GexCon hosts the web pages under the newly upgraded domain This solution facilitates maintenance and updates, since most of the members of the Local Organizing Committee have access to the GexCon site. We use the Conference Management Toolkit (CMT) from Microsoft Research to handle abstract and paper submission, review submission, author notification, etc. Authors must create a user profile by going through the Sign Up Wizard at the CMT site. The login page for the CMT site is Proceedings We plan to combine the papers into one single PDF document, with page numbers and ISBN number, but we do not intend to print hard copies for all participants. The proceedings will be available on a USB memory sticks. There may be a printed book of abstracts, containing the abstracts submitted with the final papers (pure text, and maximum 2000 characters per abstract). 7
