The book includes an overview of each major body system that introduces and explains the organs and vocabulary relating to that system. To access prior knowledge and summarize concepts learned, a KWL Chart is included for each system. Following each KWL Chart is an exercise matching terms with definitions. This is a useful tool to assess what students already know (K) and could be given at the end of the unit to see what students have learned (L). The crossword puzzles do not include Word Banks so they serve as good review tests. Also included are diagrams of each system and of individual organs with Word Banks for labeling. Magic squares, word searches, and anagrams within each unit are fun ways to familiarize students with vocabulary, improve spelling skills, and learn interesting facts. Many of these exercises can also be used for assessment purposes. The book contains connections to language arts related to the human body with such activities as guided research pages and creative writing activities. To reinforce and strengthen students understanding of concepts and to develop their science-process skills, a variety of activities, investigations, observations, demonstrations, and models are included. 4 Name Building Blocks of the Body Human bodies are made up of trillions of tiny building blocks called cells. Most cells are too small to be seen without using a microscope. There are over 200 different kinds of cells in human bodies. Each type of cell has a different shape and size, and each type has a different job to do in the body. At any moment, there are billions of cells in the body that die and are replaced by new ones. Cells in the body do not work alone. Cells of the same kind work together to make up tissue. A tissue is a group of cells that are alike and perform a certain job together. Just as cells are grouped into tissues, the tissues of the body are grouped together into organs. Organs, such as the brain, heart, lungs, and stomach are the main parts of the body and are arranged into systems. A system is a group of organs that work together to perform one or more jobs. Label the cell type that is pictured and described below. 6 Name Systems of the Human Body The body is made up of an amazing group of systems. The systems of the body all work together and need each other to keep the body healthy and well. Each system has certain functions. The systems of the body are made up of groups of organs that work together to carry out the functions of that system.
