1 Diabetes and Your Circulatory System: The story of the lost limbs. 2 Overview The module s objective is to familiarize the students with the structure and function of the circulatory system and to illustrate the connection with other systems in the body. The target audience are 7 th grade students. Four 45 minute periods will be used to deliver the module which includes 3 activities. The design theme revolves around introducing the students to inquiry based learning and incorporating ethical issues

3 Key Concepts and Process Skills Constructing models is one way to understand and explain scientific concepts. The human organism is composed of organs. Different parts of an organ interact to perform specific functions with one or more systems. systems within the human body are named according to the function they perform. The blood is a part of the circulatory system whose function is to transport gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide), nutrients and wastes within the human body.

4 Key Concepts and Process Skills Cont. During respiration, humans take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Lungs provide surface area for oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide wastes to leave the blood. Organs use the oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood, and in turn produce wastes such as carbon dioxide. Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. The liver, kidneys, and large intestines play roles in waste removal while the stomach and small intestines play roles in providing nutrients to the body.

8 Background Info Cont. The human body is composed of several systems working together. Each system is defined by the function it performs. The following is a list of these systems: The respiratory system The reproductive system The nervous system The cardiovascular system The digestive system The excretory system The lymphatic system The skeletal system The muscular systems The immune system The endocrine system The integument system

9 Activities The following activities were designed to illustrate the main ideas of the module The Invisible Consumer Glucose as an energy source for living things It is Red and Blue and goes in circles Gas and Nutrients Exchange Why is it Gone? Leg Prosthesis

10 The Invisible Consumer In this activity, the students will design an experiment to investigate the use of glucose as an energy source for cells The students will then quantitatively measure the amount of carbon dioxide produced by the cells

12 Red and Blue and Goes in Circles The students model the path of blood as it travels through the human circulatory system They will use 4 different colored beads Red, oxygenated blood Blue, deoxygenated blood White, nutrients Green, Waste products Students will use the following template to do this activity after complete class discussion.

15 Why is it Gone? In this activity, the students will be designing a leg prosthesis using craft sticks and modeling clay. An example will be provided on how the prosthesis will look like in the end. The prosthesis will be supposed to balance a plastic doll.

16 Project Inquiry based learning will be implemented through class discussion of open-ended questions. The students design will be based on the available materials. Ethics will be presented through the students personal evaluation of nutritional and social issues.
