1 Instructional Materials: PGCPS Computer Graphics 1 High School Curriculum Guide, Communicating through Graphic Design by Kevin Gatta & Claire Mowbray Golding Contact Information: ext 424 Course Description: This course is an exploration of the creative potential, nature and use of computer imaging, typography, layout and design programs as an artist s tool. It will provide an opportunity for students to acquire and develop the skills needed to create various types of computer generated work using software, internet and various input and output devices. Assignments will include computer design and layout, image manipulation, reading and writing assignments, thumbnail and final comp sketches, skills, review, checkpoints, and test and quizzes. Course Topics: 1 st Quarter: Course Introduction: Computer code of conduct form, seating assignments, policies & expectations Check- In, Reflection on skills and capabilities, Introduction to Eight Intelligences Pretest Assessment: (Word Search, Drawing Pretest, Elements of Art Pretest, Student Autobiography) Introduction to Computers (Unit 1) The Language of Art: Elements of Art, Principles of Design, Art Criticism (Unit 2) Introduction to Typography (Unit 3) Introduction to Graphic Design (Unit 4) 2 nd Quarter: Introduction to Graphic Design (Unit 4) Publication Design (Unit 5) Promotional Materials: Logo Design (Unit 6) Promotional Materials: CD Cover Design (Unit 6) 3 rd Quarter: Promotional Materials: Promotional Package for Musical Act (Unit 6) Creating Multi- Page Documents (Unit 7) Introduction to Animation (Unit 8) Advance Uses of Adobe Photoshop (Unit 9) 4 th Quarter: Self- Direction and Exploration (Unit 10) Introduction to Electronic Portfolio Course Expectations: Be on time: Bring to class, your materials and supplies. NO passes will be written to lockers for supplies (see supply list). Be in your seat when the bell rings; otherwise you are considered to be tardy and will receive a 0 on your warm- up grade. Two unexcused tardies equals one absence. Five unexcused absences per quarter equal FAILURE. Parental notification is required after three (3) unexcused absences. Make- up work: You may make up missed assignments with an excused yellow slip only. Missed assignments should be completed and turned in according to the number of days absent. Do not disrupt class instruction: Loud talking, cell phones and ipods are prohibited in class; standing up and walking around, and other distractions are not allowed. Leaving the class without permission and having friends visit will not be allowed. Do not ask to leave the classroom except for medical emergencies. Three restroom passes per student per quarter will be issued. Use proper English and good manners: Do not hold discussions when the teacher is giving instructions or demonstrating a lesson. Raise your hand and be respectful when the teacher is helping someone else. Profanity is prohibited. Hats and coats are not to be worn in the classroom.

2 Do not bring or eat snacks or drink juices in the class. Dismissal: The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class. The lesson concludes with closure, homework assignments, and straightening of the desks and chairs. Anyone standing up by the door before the bell rings will receive a 0 on the closure grade. Students are expected to show academic and behavioral discipline, and use care in handling the computers. Required Materials: (for entire course beginning the first week of class) (No Work will be save on the computer, all work must be saved on USB drive or in your PGCPS Gmail account), 3- Ring Binder for handouts and notes, #2 Pencil, Pen, Headphones, and a black and white writing journal, Colored Pencils, Ruler, #2 pencils, other materials and/ supplies as needed I have received this notification regarding the Computer Graphics 1 Course Outline at Crossland High School. 3 Grading Criteria: ART DEPARTMENT: Grading Criteria for Visual Arts Grades for Visual Art courses will be determined in the following manner: 50% Classroom/Group Participation Portfolio Presentation Studio Projects Oral Presentations Class Participation Concepts/objectives have been met Completion of project Creativity, originality Proper craftsmanship Warm- Ups Daily work habits Care of supplies and equipment Time on task Group interaction Studio activities participation Attendance and promptness Preparation for class (materials) Cooperation 20% Homework Written Critiques Class Critiques, Research Vocabulary Notebooks Warm- ups 30% Test, Quizzes, Individual Assessments Written Critiques Exams Journals Research Sketchbooks Oral Presentations Class Work/Class Participation 50% of your grade Assignments - Class projects will be turned in via edmodo, posted to Photography Blog or Google Drive on the date they are due in your scheduled class time or five points daily deductions will be given. No work will be accepted two weeks after due date. Participation - Students will earn five points daily for bringing materials, observing class rules and participation. Students are required to use class time wisely for completing assigned projects. Also, at the completion of each project there will be a whole class critique. Each student is required to participate in the discussion; lending insight, constructive criticism, and newly acquired artistic knowledge to the critique. Warm- Ups - Warm Ups are assigned as soon as students enter the classroom and can be found on the front board. This will be a time of reflection from last classes lesson and a jump- start into the current days lesson. Homework 20% of your grade Generally is given once or twice a week, sometimes weekends because the opportunity for adventure is more apparent. Assignments generally consist of taking pictures of given subject matter and posting it to your Photography Blog and then the class group flickr account for a critique on the due date.

4 1 st Day you have a chance of receiving 100 % uploaded for critique 2 nd Day you will receive 80% if uploaded after critique 3 rd Day you will receive 75% After that 0% Missing homework can lower your final grade by 2 letter grades! Notebook Assignments - Notebook assignments will be given as needed. Notebooks are to contain daily quick writes, notes from lectures, rough drafts of ideas for assignments and art reviews of articles and or shows. You will have a notebook check every two weeks on Fridays. Additionally, students are required daily to participate in the school- wide writing journal project Assessment 30% of your grade Test: Final Exam Unit assessments will consist of class work. Reviews will ALWAYS be given. Quizzes: Periodic quizzes relevant to material that is covered will be given throughout the semester. All assessments will be given at the beginning of the class period. Unit and mini assessments will be administered at the end of each unit. Extra Credit: Two assignments will be offered per quarter. Generally they will consist of research papers on photographers and you taking pictures manipulating your interpretation of their work. MAKE UP WORK Students may make up assignments, quizzes, and tests only if they have a yellow slip with excused absences. Assignment extensions depend on how many excuse absences a student has. Grades A= Demonstrates a clear understanding of the concept presented and shows consideration for elements of detail and/ or creativity. B= Demonstrates adequate understanding of the concept presented and shows some consideration for detail and/ or creativity. C= Demonstrates some understanding of the concept presented but lacks detail, completion, or style. D= Demonstrates little understanding of the concept presented and makes no attempt to show detail or personalization. E= Did not attempt work or missed project due to unexcused absence. 5 Crossland High School - - Computer Graphics Lab COMPUTER CODE OF CONDUCT I understand that the computer is the property of Prince George s County Public Schools and as a student I am responsible for abiding by the following computer code of conduct: I will not bring or eat food, drinks, gum, candy, or any snacks in the Computer Graphics Lab I will have my school ID badge visible to enter the lab If there is a computer malfunction of any kind, I will notify the teacher immediately, I will not restart or unplug the machine, or try to fix the problem myself I will only work in designated programs and only on the assignments given. If I am found working in another program without permission or working on assignment that was not assigned in this class, I will receive a grade of 0 for the day I will raise my hand, if I need assistance. I will not shout across the room I will not intentionally damage computers, computer parts and connectors, Internet cables or any other computer- related school property I will only use the computers, printer, and the Internet for only for class assignments; I agree that I will be charged 25 cents per page for illegal printing I will not give out personal information such as; my name, address, phone numbers while on the Internet I will not access chat lines (ex. Twitter) I will not access online sites that are inappropriate, disruptive to the learning environment, or contains profanity I will not download any music from the Internet and burn CDs or DVDs without permission I will not copy work from the Internet without giving credit to the source of the information I will not use an account or password of another user without authorization I will not access, copy, alter, or trash another person s computer files or projects I will not have the computer volume so loud as to disrupt class instruction. I agree to use headphones. I will not transfer a copy of my work to another student s computer via Bluetooth I will not draw, scan, browse, download, or type anything that could be considered obscene or offensive. I understand that if I violate this code it will result in immediate revocation of my computer THERE WILL BE NO ADDITIONAL WARNINGS OR REMINDERS TO OBERY THIS CODE I will not draw or write on the desk or computers, I understand that if drawing or writings are on found in my assigned area, Disciplinary procedure compliant with the Student Code of Conduct will be submitted to the appropriate Administrator I will remain at the computer that is assigned to me for the duration of the course. When class is over, I will save all work on a USB drive, I will quit all programs, I will log off the computer I will make sure the mouse and keyboard are straightened (under monitor) and chair pushed under desk NOTE: Excessive abuse of the above rules will result in the following consequences: 1. Computer privileges will be terminated immediately and student will receive a 0 for the assignment and a 0 for computer conduct. Written assignment will be given in place of computer assignment. 2. Disciplinary procedure compliant with the Student Code of Conduct will be submitted to the appropriate Administrator. 3. Students will be financially responsible for any damage that you cause to school property I have received this notification regarding the use of the computers in the Computer Graphics Lab at Crossland High School.
