1 Welcome Expectations, Policies, & Procedures 6th Grade Digital Design & Fabrication 2015/16 This year is guaranteed to be full of growth, excitement, hard work, and a lot of success. We are expecting for you to have more fun than in any other year and to learn more about yourself as a student and about the content covered in class, than you ever thought possible. Digital Design an Fabrication is your first Exploratory course at HTM, you will learn how to express yourself and communicate ideas through various media (such as digital video, photography, graphic art/design) as well as learn the technical skills necessary to use today s high tech digital fabricating tools such as 3D printer, Laser Cutter, CNC Routers e and more. You will gain valuable life skills and produce exciting, real-world projects with a purpose. Expectations Each student has the right to learn in an environment conducive to academic, social, and emotional progress and growth. Our school is a safe environment for all kinds of people and beliefs. Mutual respect should be the guiding principle during our time together. Students We will not compare you with other students; avoid comparing yourself with other students. All that is required of you is your best effort on a daily basis. Parents We would like to see your child be successful and confident in our class and we are looking forward to working with you to make this happen. Your child will be learning many new concepts and skills; they will be asked to show us their understanding frequently. Please ask your child what they have learned each day. You will be able to follow their progress through our daily notes page at You can expect that we will contact you by phone or to update you on your child s progress throughout the semester. 2 Grading and Assessment Students will receive on-going formative assessment in the form of comments and rubrics so that parents can follow along with how their child is doing in this class. From these assessments you will gain a more complete view of your child s experience here at HTM because you will have insight into both student and teacher perspectives on various aspects of their learning, such as - effort, understanding, participation, skill development and group collaboration. Assignments and assessments will be updated and posted regularly through Powerschool. What if I am absent? Students will be given extra time to complete work assigned during an absence (extra time equaling the number of days the student was absent). In the case of a planned absence (family vacation, dentist appointment, etc.) the student should notify me and Mrs. Ruiz beforehand and request assignments prior to the absence. When a student is absent it is always his or her responsibility to: 1. Find out what assignments and information were missed during the absence by checking-in with peers and teachers. 2. Turn in all assignments assigned prior to absence upon his or her return. ***If you know you will be absent for longer than 4 consecutive days please contact Mrs. Ruiz to arrange a contract for independent study to be completed at least 2 weeks before your planned absence.

3 Semester at a Glance Disclaimer: At High Tech Middle we work to prepare projects that are both academically rigorous and enjoyable. Our curriculum is shaped by the voices of our students, in an attempt to best reflect the needs and interests of a diverse group of learners. 4 Week skills covered - elements of design - learning to tell our story - creating a canvas in Photoshop skills covered - using selection tools - masking backgrounds - critique and revision - final draft and publishing Description Introduction to Photoshop - Portfolio Cover End of 1st Semester- 6th grade students finish with Digital Design and Fabrication until 7th grade; Second semester 6th grade students take Maker Studio (Studio M). FAQ Q: What will we learn in Digital Design and Fabrication (formerly Multimedia)? A: Here is a short list of potential skills: Photoshop - photo manipulation and Illustrator - logos, graphics technical design for fabrication with CNC router, laser cutter, 3D printer, Vinyl Cutter etc.) Construction techniques Flash - animation, game design graphic design digital citizenship - privacy, cyber bullying, social media, copy-write laws. Q: What projects will we do? A: The projects we do depend heavily on what students are doing in their Math/Science and Humanities classes, as well as with the interests of the students in the class. Q: What if I have never used a Mac computer before. A: Don t worry, we have students coming to our multimedia class with a very wide range of experiences working with computers, you will fit in perfectly even if you have never touched a computer before. Q: What if I do not have a computer at home? A: You do not need any access to computers outside of school for our Digital Design class. All of our projects will be completed during school time. Q: What if I run out of time for a project and need to take a computer home? A: While you won t be able to take any of the Digital Design lab computers home with you, we can arrange to give you extra work time before and/or after school to finish your work work, provided you have been using your class time well.

5 High Tech High Computer Use Policy Access to and the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and bulletin boards while exchanging messages with Internet users throughout the world. Families should be warned that some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people. While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages. But ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and information resources. To that end, HTH supports and respects each family s right to decide if their child should not have Internet access, and relies on the family to inform us of that choice. Internet and Rules Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are everywhere in the school environment. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to network services is given to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Access is a privilege not a right. Access entails responsibility. Individual users of the computer networks are responsible for their behavior and communications over these networks. It is presumed that users will comply with school standards. Beyond the clarification of such standards, HTH is not responsible for restricting, monitoring, or controlling the communications of individuals utilizing the network. Network storage areas may be accessed by network administrators to review files and communications, maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Students should have no expectation of personal privacy in any matters stored in, created, received, or sent over the school computer networks, computers, system, the intranet, internet or any other school equipment ( I.T. ). These are subject to review by the schools at any time, with or without notice, with or without cause and without the permission of any student or parent/guardian. The schools reserve the right to monitor access, retrieve, download, copy, listen to, or delete anything stored in, created, received or sent over school computer networks, computers, system or any other school equipment, without notice and without the permission of any user. Moreover, to protect the integrity of the our I.T. systems and the users thereof against unauthorized or improper use of these systems, the schools reserve the right, without notice, to limit or restrict any individual's use, and to inspect, copy, remove, or delete any unauthorized use of this technology upon authorization of the school director or his/her designee. Students are prohibited from using I.T. for any unauthorized or unlawful purpose. Using I.T. to send, save, view, forward or create harassing or offensive content or message is strictly prohibited. Offensive material includes, but is not limited to pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit material, sexual comments, jokes or images that would violate the school policies. The school policies against harassment and discrimination apply to the use of I.T.

6 Students must respect all copyrights and licenses to software and other on-line information, and may not upload,download, or copy software or other material through I.T. without the prior written authorization of the director of I.T. or his/her designee. Within reason, freedom of speech and access to information will be honored. The following are some of the actions that are not permitted, and violations may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal action, including expulsion. Any attempt to guess passwords, break in to other accounts, or gain unauthorized access to administrator accounts Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures Using obscene language Harassing, insulting or attacking others Damaging computers, computer systems or computer networks Violating copyright laws Using another s password Trespassing in another s folders, work or files Intentionally wasting limited resources Employing the network for commercial purpose
