2 AUDIO VIDEO PRODUCTION COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an overview of the basic elements required to produce media rich video through hands-on activities incorporating writing, performance recording and editing, and styles of filmmaking. Students will learn to work within a group environment to complete video projects as well as several self-generated projects. The course serves as an introductory course this year with the option to take the follow up class Advanced Audio Video Production. SUPPLY LIST - They aren t required but headphones will be needed for editing video. If you don t have any some you may borrow some from me for an exchange of collateral. ABSENCES & MAKEUP WORK Attendance is very important in Audio Video Production! Any class work missed due to an absence must be made up in the lab before or after school within one week of the absence to get full credit for an assignment; otherwise, there will be a grade reduction. The lab is also open to students who need tutoring or additional time to complete an assignment. BEHAVIOR Students should behave responsibly, taking care not to harm themselves, others, or property in the classroom. Students are expected to show respect for the teacher and fellow classmates. Any rude or disruptive behavior will result in either a parent phone call, detention, or an immediate referral to the office.
3 GRADING My grading policy might be a little different than your other classes. Rather than giving a percentage grade on an assignment, each assignment will be worth a certain number of points. For example: Daily Assignment One- Possible 10 points Daily Assignment Two- Possible 40 points Creative Project One- Possible 80 points Total Possible Points for Six Weeks- 130 points In this scenario, there are 3 assignment totaling a possible 130 points. If you scored 8 out of 10 on the first, 34 out of 40 on the second, and 78 out of 80 on the third, you would have = 120 points out of 130 possible points. Divide 120 by 130 and you have a 92.3% for the six weeks. HOMEWORK Homework will consist largely of filming projects outside of class and bringing the necessary materials such as costumes or props to film during class. A majority of storyboarding will be expected to outside of class as well. ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY Cell phones, ipods, CD/DVD players, pagers, or other electronic audio and video devices are not to be used by students during class hours. Electronic devices should be off and invisible during this time; such devices will be taken up if seen or heard.
4 GET INOLVED Audio Video students can get involved outside of school by helping me out in operating the jumbotron on Friday nights at the football games. I need people to operate cameras, work instant replay, play animations, and even direct the production. Free pizza and drinks provided. I also receive many requests from teachers, gcisd administration, and businesses within the community for video projects. These videos can look good on college applications and even video portfolios. AUDIO VIDEO LAB RULES & GUIDELINES 1. Please do not use my class to run personal errands like going to the front office, seeing a teacher for something, etc. 2. No food, drinks, candy, makeup, COFFEE etc. in the lab at any time. (Water bottles with a cap being the only exception.) 3. Work stations are to be left in an orderly fashion each day. 4. Do not share your computer password with another student. 5. In order to receive a grade on an assignment turned in to the teacher, you must have a duplicate copy of your work saved in your folder on your computer station; otherwise, a zero will be given. 6. All parties involved in a cheating incident will receive a zero on that assignment, parents will be notified, and a referral may be written. 7. Do not disconnect, switch, add, or remove peripherals from the computer (mouse, keyboard, headphones, etc.). Please talk to me if there s a problem. 8. Do not place keyboards on your lap while working.
5 9. Students are not permitted to download or upload games, software, or other items from the internet, except for pictures or files used in class projects. 10. Students will be subject to disciplinary action if they are involved in hacking, vandalism, or making unauthorized changes to the hard drive of the computer. 11. The lab is open before school only to my students for makeup work or tutoring. The lab is closed to any student not in Mr. Phillips s classes. Do not come to the lab to surf the internet or play games. 12. Keep your work area neat and free of safety hazards. Backpacks must be placed either under your table or at a designated place in the classroom. Please do not place your backpacks in the aisles or at the side of your desk. 13. No playing of any type of games on the internet or surfing the web, even if you are finished with your work. The computers are used for CLASSWORK ONLY. 14. CDs, videos, photographs, movies, and video footage brought to class or viewed during class for assignment purposes may not contain profanity, vulgarity, lewdness, risky behavior, inappropriate attire, or offensive subject matter. All must have a G rating, be school appropriate, and meet the school s dress code. 15. Students are not to participate in text messaging, ing, and going to sites that have games. 16. If a portable hard drive or Flash drive is seen during class without the permission of the teacher, a grade of zero will be given. No copying of information to or from CDs or DVDs without the permission of the teacher. 17. Students must uphold the Fair Use Guidelines & copyright laws when using resource materials from the internet.
6 18. Remember you are responsible if you purposely do anything to damage the computer. Notify the teacher immediately if you discover damage done to the computer by the previous class period. 19. Do not use the printer unless you have permission from the teacher. 20. Students are prohibited from uploading or downloading from an internet storage site or a server. 21. Late passes will not be written for students who choose to stay late during tutorials or at the end of the class period. Teachers in your next class period like to start their classes on time, and it disrupts the learning process for students to walk in late. 22. Students who engage in talking during testing will receive a zero on the test. 23. When borrowing cameras or equipment, please follow the guidelines set by Mr. Phillips. 24. Do not ask to use the teacher s phone to make a personal phone call. Teacher s phones are for teacher s use only. 25. Students must agree to abide by the rules as set forth by the GCISD Electronic Communications Policy for internet usage. Only school appropriate sites should be visited on the internet. 26. Students who choose not to work will not be allowed on the computers and will be logged out.
7 Note To Parents(Please Read) I really want my students and their parents to understand that this class will require students to film video projects outside of class on occasion. I understand that students have extra-curricular activities and jobs that take up a lot of time outside of class but the projects will still need to be done on time regardless of outside commitments. I typically try to announce the projects in advance so students have time to plan out days they can work on their video project.
