1 Advertising/Digital Technology Syllabus Instructor: Mr. Dupaly Room: C-100 Phone: X Course Description The purpose of the course is to prepare high school students for postsecondary study in Advertising, Media Arts, and Design Technology areas. Advertising/Digital Technology is intended to provide students with in-depth skills to deliver solutions that make great digital experiences possible. Exposure to a broad curriculum will allow students to explore a diverse career cluster. Emphasis will be placed on enabling the creation and delivery of compelling content and experiences across multiple operating systems, devices, and media. Critical thinking and problem solving skills will be stressed to help students communicate better. By combining concepts of advertising, art and design with innovative technology, students will be inspired to creatively improve the way people are experiencing and interacting with information. Students learn-by-doing, using the techniques, tools, and software of professionals working in their desired career field. Instructional Philosophy Using a laboratory approach to learning, activities will integrate digital technology with basic advertising concepts and elements and principles of design. Emphasis will be placed on cooperative learning and research. Material will be presented using various instructional strategies such as demonstration, group work, hands-on design labs, videos, tutorials, and the Internet. Many class sessions will be student-centered, focusing on student activities, with the instructor facilitating the activities and learning. Class discussions, reading, critical thinking and problem solving activities, and individual Internet research projects will be used. Students will present their projects and research results through multimedia, oral and written presentations. Students work is expected to be high quality and meet the established standards. Opportunities will be given to students to revise their work until the standards are met. Students will often work in groups, but each student is responsible for completing his/her individual assignment in relation to the group s work. Major Course Goals NEW! Adobe Certified Associate Certification An Adobe Certified Associate has earned a certification that validates entry-level skills needed to plan, design, build, and maintain effective communications by using different forms of digital media. This will be a major emphasis of the curriculum due to the benefit of students earning industry-standard credentials. Lenape Tech is an authorized testing center. Students will study a certification curriculum and apply themselves to pass the Adobe Certified Associate exams. Practice testing will also be used to help prepare for the certification exam. Web Authoring Learn web design principles, website organization and structure, file formats, accessibility issues, homepage usability, and website management principles Learn basic HTML code, web graphics, web animation, interactivity, and cascading style sheets Learn skills for banner advertising and web marketing techniques Design actual websites for local businesses and community organizations Advertising Technology Learn to apply media tools and develop promotional strategies Develop advertising campaigns and media plans 1

2 Enhance creative ability Craft selling messages Target customers Use direct marketing Design advertising messages for print, radio, television, and the Internet Marketing Management Develop marketing plans and implement strategies for the production and distribution of digital media Work in teams on case studies that teach real-world marketing fundamentals Multimedia Design Learn concepts and terms of multimedia technology Utilize scanners, digital cameras, digital playback systems, digital video and audio equipment Understand multimedia file formats and their use Learn the elements of multimedia, including graphics, sound, text, and animation Explore the elements and principles of design Digital Graphic Design Learn advanced principles of design, organization of visual elements, color, texture, contrast, perspective, balance, unity, typography, digital photography, and computer graphics Use industry-standard technology to create digital graphics for print, web pages, video, and multimedia presentations Learn digital image editing and photo manipulation techniques Digital Video/Television Studio Production Learn video production techniques Focus on composing and producing digital video and audio media using non-linear video editing systems Learn live video broadcasting and broadcast news journalism using in-house TV studio Utilize storyboarding, scriptwriting, and storytelling techniques Develop skills using equipment such as HD cameras, Mac digital editing systems, lighting, microphones, digital video mixers, chroma key systems E-Commerce Understand business on the Internet Research online business services Develop an Internet business plan Learn fundamentals of conducting business on the We Computers and Internet Technology Develop understanding and proficient operation of computers and related hardware, software, and operating systems Develop understanding and proficient operation of common program functions, word processing functions, spreadsheet functions, and presentation software functions Develop understanding of networks and the Internet, electronic mail, using the Internet, and the impact of computing on society Learn fundamentals of the World Wide Web and computer-based research Utilize Internet search engines to conduct research and explore important course topics Become an expert at using the Web and solving problems with online research skills Power Standards Activities and projects simulate the challenge of professional projects, giving the student the opportunity to learn and apply software and design skills on the job. They will also require students to analyze, plan, research, and evaluate situations and information. Students will draw upon technical and academic skills related to general workplace, industry, and state standards, including: Media and Communication Technology Research Using Information Science & Technology 2

3 Reading Writing Speaking/Oral Presentation Listening Numeracy/Mathematics Career Education & Work Class Attendance and Participation To meet the objectives noted above, it is essential that you come to class on a regular basis and be a frequent contributor to class discussions. Therefore, attendance is mandatory and you will be called upon to participate in class discussions and activities. You are responsible for the activities of each class period. Students should get missed notes from classmates. It is the student s responsibility to ask the instructor about missed work. Students are expected to participate in class field trips. It is expected that you be self-motivated and guided for much of your work. Lenape Tech School-wide Grading Scale: Grades will be determined by the point system and earned on a percentage basis as follows: A = 92% to100% (Excellent) B = 84% to 91% (Above Average) C = 77% to 83% (Average) D = 70% to 76% (Below Average) F = 69 or Below (Unsatisfactory and Failing) I = Incomplete (If incomplete work is not made up within two weeks, the I will become an F.) Course Assessment Plan Assessment methods will include the following, with varying weights at the discretion of the instructor (subject to modification): 40% Projects/Assignments/Design Labs - In Class and Homework, including: Assignments and Computer Lab Activities Portfolio Development Internet Research & Presentations Case Studies Problem-solving/Critical Thinking Activities Others To Be Determined As Necessary 40% Quizzes/Exams 20% Workplace Essential Skills Development/Class Participation Professional Attitude/Professional Workplace Behavior & Attire Neat Work Environment/Workstation & Classroom Maintenance Productivity/Time Management/Initiative Dependability/Individual and Teamwork Performance/Meeting Goals/Being Prepared Level of Independent Learning and Educational Responsibility 100% TOTAL GRADE POSSIBLE Late Work Policy: To be regarded on time, work must be completed by the beginning of the period on the day it is due. As a rule, late work will not be accepted. If absent when an assignment is due, you have the number of days absent counting the day of your return. You must keep up with current assignments during that time. Assignments completed later receive a grade of zero. It is the responsibility of the student to ask the instructor about work and activities missed. 3

4 If you are absent the day of a test, and knew about the test before your absence, you will be expected to take the test the day you return to school. Classroom Rules and Behavior Students are expected to demonstrate college-ready or job-ready behavior in the classroom: Abide by code of behavior detailed in student handbook. The computer use policy warrants extra careful attention in Advertising/Digital Technology. If not sure-ask! Do not eat or drink in class unless you have been given special permission. Come to class on time and take your seat. Remain in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up. Begin the start up activity at the beginning of class. Follow the teacher s directions immediately. Attend to personal needs before coming to class. Don t ask for passes during the first fifteen minutes of class or during class activity unless you have a real emergency. Keep your head up and off the desk. Sleeping or resting is not acceptable. Bring required materials every day unless you are otherwise directed. Use polite speech and body language. Intelligent discussion is encouraged and is part of class participation. Complaining and whining is not acceptable. Do not cheat. All students involved with cheating will receive a zero, including ones sharing their work. Do the right thing, even when no one is looking (This is called ethics). Classroom Materials/Texts Students will need the following: Three-ring loose-leaf binder Pens and pencils Paper Calculator Lenape Tech account (for use ONLY for educationally-related purposes) Various texts will be used throughout the course. Use only the numbered book assigned to you. You are responsible for that book. Books are not to leave the room without permission. Handouts Students are required to purchase an ADT shop shirt to be worn when designated. Recommended: USB Flash Storage Drive. Ear buds/earphones Hand sanitizer Software Industry standard software will be used extensively in this course. New software and upgrades are continuously added. Software includes Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Flash, Freehand, Fireworks, Final Cut, Apple QuickTime Pro, ilife, iwork, Garage Band, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Required/Recommended Readings Due to the rapid rate of change in this technological area, the instructor will provide specifications for appropriate texts and supportive material throughout the course. 4
