2 WIPO/GEO/WI/91/INF/l page 2 General Information Objective This Symposium will deal with the protection of geographical indications (appellations of origin and other indications of source), at the national and multilateral level. In this context, important questions concerning the protection of geographical indications will be examined, such as the definition of geographical indication, settlement of conflicts between trademarks and geographical indications and possibilities of improving the existing protection of geographical indications, in particular as regards the existing multilateral treaties administered by WIPO. Venue and Dates The Symposium will take place at the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden, the capital of the State of Hessen, which is close to the area of the Rheingau, where some of the best German wines are produced. The Symposium will start on Thursday, October 17, 1991, with registration at 8.30 a.m. and the opening ceremony at a.m., and will be concluded on Friday, October 18, 1991, with a closing banquet at the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden. A reception at Schloss Johannisberg and a dinner including wine tasting at Schloss Reinhartshausen will be offered by the German Wine Institute on October 17, 1991 (bus transportation from and to Wiesbaden will be provided for). A registration form is enclosed. Speakers Presentations will be made by representatives of: - the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which is an intergovernmental organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and one of the specialized agencies in the United Nations system of organizations, with more than 120 member States, and which is responsible for the promotion of the protection of intellectual property (including the protection of geographical indications) throughout the world; - the International Office of Vine and Wine (OIV), which is an intergovernmental organization with headquarters in Paris, France, with more than 30 member States; the OIV deals with scientific, technical, economic and legal aspects relating to vine and wine products; it has laid down a definition of appellation of origin for wines and wine spirits and has passed resolutions relating to their protection; - the Commission of the European Communities; the German Wine Institute; - the National Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO), France; - and by experts from Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the United States of America and Yugoslavia.

If a registration is cancelled after September 30, no registration fee will be reimbursed. The excursions for accompanying persons on October 17 and 18 are free of charge. The excursion to St. Goar and Bernkastel on October 19 is organized by the German Wine Institute with registration (fee approximately 150 Deutschmarks) at the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden on October 17 and 18.
