1 EIRMA/02.319, October 2002 Leveraging IP through Collaboration EIRMA Special Interest Group II, Rome, 5-6 December 2002 Summary Collaborations, outsourcing, Framework 6, and the European Research Area stand for a strong shift from doing most R&D in-house towards externalisation of R&D. This has implications for the ownership and management of IP. In particular universities and institutes are increasingly insisting on the ownership of IP rights for technologies they have helped to develop. Which are the consequences for industry on one hand and for universities and institutes on the other? How is the related legislation developing in different European countries? How does industries cope with the new trends? The meeting will look at collaboration between, companies, between companies and universities, and between companies and institutes. A further aspect of interest is IP in software that was developed in collaboration. How does this affect software companies and which are the pitfalls when using "foreign" code in process software?
