4 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES ON SPEAKERS Professor Dr. Guangzhong Chen Prof. Chen is a tenured professor at China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). He is a leading jurist and pioneer in the field of criminal justice in China. The contributions he has made have helped establish criminal procedure as it is now practiced in China today. Authorized by the State Council in 1991, he was entitled to enjoy a government allowance for experts with distinguished contributions. Much of his published work focuses on criminal procedure law; one of his research pieces in this area, Suggestions for Amendments to Criminal Procedure Law of the PRC, was awarded first prize in the Beijing Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science awards, and first prize by the Ministry of Education in its Outstanding Achievements awards. Prof. Chen is a former president of the China University of Political Science and Law. He is currently a deputy director of the Academic Committee of China Law Society, as well as honorary president of the Criminal Procedural Law Association of China Law Society. He is also a special invited consulter of the Supreme People s Court, a member of the consulting experts committee of the Supreme People s Procuratorate, and a member of the consulting experts committee of the Humanities and Social Science Research Department of the Ministry of Education. Professor Dr. Baosheng Zhang Prof. Zhang is a vice president of CUPL, the director of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science at CUPL, and a director of the Cooperation Center on Modernization and Civilization of the Judicial System. He is one of the leading professors in the field of evidence law and forensic science in China and serves as a director of the Key Laboratory of Evidence Science (CUPL), Ministry of Education, China. He is a law professor at CUPL and lectures both there and at the China-EU School of Law (CESL). He is also a guest professor at Ren Min University of China and Southwest University, as well as a guest research fellow at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Prof. Zhang is a council member of China Law Society, a standing council member of the China Association for Legal Education, and a member of the International Association of Procedural Law. 4

5 Professor Dr. Shuyi Wang Prof. Wang, law professor at Wuhan University, is the director of the Research Institute of Environmental Law and a director of the Cooperation Center on Modernization and Civilization of Judicial System. From 1993 until 1996, he held the post of First Diplomatic Secretary at the Chinese Embassy to Ukraine. Prof. Wang has participated in the drafting and/or revision of many laws in the People s Republic of China, including the Environmental Protection Law, the Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes, and the Law on the Prevention of Water Pollution. He has also completed many research projects appointed by the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Prof. Wang is vice president of the Environmental Law Association of China Law Society. He is a member of the Law Experts Committee of the All-China Environmental Protection Federation and a member of the China Environmental Protection Foundation. Professor Dr. Liling Yue Prof. Yue teaches law at CUPL and the China-EU School of Law (CESL). As a former Fulbright and Alexander von Humboldt Scholar, she has obtained very rich visiting and lecturing experience worldwide. She has delivered lectures in foreign universities and courts in Belgium, Germany, South Korea, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam. Prof. Yue has led several research projects, such as the EU-China Comparative Research on Sentencing and the Effective Criminal Defense and Criminal Trial and Human Rights Protection. She has also participated in important legislative projects, such as the Chinese criminal procedure law reform. 5

7 Directions to the Institute Airplane: Basel/Mulhouse Airport (France/Germany exit). Take the SBG AirBus (approx. 45 minutes) to Freiburg "Hauptbahnhof" (main train station). Alternatively, drive by car to the German border, then take the A5 Autobahn north to Freiburg. Car: Train: Autobahn A5. Exit "Freiburg-Mitte." Continue in the direction "Freiburg-Mitte." Turn off to the right onto "Günterstalstraße" in the direction of "Schauinsland." o To get to the MPI building Günterstalstraße 73: After driving roughly 1 km, you will see the building on the left-hand side of the street. This building houses the reception area. o To get to the MPI building Fürstenbergstraße 19: After driving roughly 1 km, turn left onto Türkenlouisstraße. After approx. 200 m, turn left again onto Fürstenbergstraße. After 80 m, the building is visible on the right-hand side. Take the IC, EC, or ICE to Freiburg "Hauptbahnhof" (main train station). From the main train station, take tram no. 3 (direction "Vauban") or no. 5 (direction "Rieselfeld") to the stop "Johanneskirche." There, change to tram no. 2 (direction "Günterstal") and get off at the second tram stop "Holbeinstraße." o To get to the MPI building Günterstalstraße 73, walk back roughly 100 m in the direction of the city center. The building is on the righthand side of the street. This building houses the reception area. o To get to the MPI building Fürstenbergstraße 19, walk another 200 m towards the city center before turning right onto Türkenlouisstraße. After approx. 200 m, turn left onto Fürstenbergstraße. After 80 m, the building is visible on the right-hand side. 7
