2 Workshop Aims: The aim of the Aerospace Engineering Workshop is to bring academics and scholars together in order to provide a platform to: 1) Connect research managers and academics between the RENKEI universities, specifically the organising institutions of Bristol, Nagoya and Southampton 2) Develop and grow relations established in 2013 at the first RENKEI aerospace workshop 3) Facilitate future project collaborations and joint industry-facing academic research 4) Steer academic research to be relevant to the needs of aerospace manufacturers 5) Support skills development Structure and Approach: Speakers: Appropriate guest speakers will be invited to give presentations on specific areas related to the theme of the workshop. The presentations will provide background as well as appropriate questions aimed at provoking discussion and opening opportunities for further collaboration. Participants (up to 2 representatives per institution): Applicants must be a Senior Researcher or a Research Manager (a person who supports researchers to find external funding opportunities, helps them apply for those funding schemes, analyses research trend incountry and abroad and /or in charge of facilitating communication between researchers and companies) with proven expertise in the area of Aerospace University/Industry partnerships of one of the 12 participating universities. Applicants must be enthusiastic about collaborative and interdisciplinary work, as well as having a keen interest in developing links with industry. They must be keen to partake in discussions during the workshop where there will elements of sharing experiences from both a UK and Japan perspective. Split of workshop topics: The University of Southampton will focus on aerodynamics and aircraft noise. The University of Bristol will focus attention on structures and composites. Site visits: Appropriate site visits will be arranged for the participants including the Southampton University Technology Centres and Bristol s National Composite Centre, as well as appropriate manufacturing companies in the region. Hosts: University of Southampton Prof. Mark Spearing Provost and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), University of Bristol, Prof. Nishan Canagarajah and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), and Prof. Nick Lieven, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) will be delighted to provide formal welcome and hospitality to our guests. 3 Accommodation: <In Southampton> Accommodation has been reserved at the Highfield House Hotel ( which is a 3 star hotel situated 2 miles from Southampton City Centre. The hotel is within walking distance of the University s Highfield Campus and is a 10 minute drive from Southampton International Airport and Parkway Railway Station. Taxis can be got from either Southampton Central station or Southampton Airport Parkway and are readily available in the taxi rank outside both stations. Gatwick Airport: trains run directly from Gatwick Airport to Southampton Central station. Southampton Airport: The Unilink bus U1 runs from outside the airport terminal into the city centre and Universities campus or there are taxis readily available at the airport. 6 Friday 18th March 2016 Industrial Visits Visit to the UK National Composites Centre, a 60M centre owned by the University of Bristol and part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult network. 10h00-13h00 Welcome and Introduction - Prof. Peter Chivers, Chief Executive of the NCC. Presentation by Business Development team on Strategy for Composites in the Aerospace sector. National Composites Centre (Emerson s Green, Bristol) Overview of how the University of Bristol and the NCC interact and work together to transfer research outputs to industry. 13h00-16h00 Tour of the facilities.
