This learning guide is intended t serve as a reference upn the cmpletin f the wrkshp. GOALS After cmpleting this wrkshp yu will: be able t define a pdcast. understand basic pdcasting terminlgy. knw the three different types f pdcasts. knw hw t access a pdcast. Recrd, edit, and exprt a simple audi pdcast using Audacity. knw where t get infrmatin abut uplading a pdcast t the UHH pdcast server. uplad a pdcast r audi file t WebCT r a curse website UNIT 1: WHAT IS PODCASTING? DEFINITIONS Pdcast - A digital media file, r a series f such files, that is distributed ver the Internet using syndicatin feeds fr playback n prtable media players and persnal cmputers. RSS (Real Simple Syndicatin) Feed - An XML frmat that is used t define channels f infrmatin such as title, authr, descriptin, dates when pdcast and episdes were created, etc. Episde - An individual media file cntained within a RSS feed. CHARACTERISTICS A pdcast can be: a ne-time prductin. a serial prductin where new episdes are prduced daily, weekly, r mnthly. dwnladed autmatically when the authr r pdcaster uplads new cntent. listened t whenever and wherever. A pdcast is like live radi - N, it s nt a real-time bradcast. Yu have t pay t hst a pdcast r t subscribe t pdcasts - N; pdcasting is free, bth t subscribers and pdcasters. TYPES OF PODCASTS: Currently, there are three types f pdcasts: A basic audi pdcast cntains audi nly and is the easiest t create and listen t. created using a vice recrder r Audacity. typical frmat is.mp3. An enhanced pdcast typically presentatins with narratin and chapters prduced with Keynte r PwerPint and third-party applicatins like PrfCast r Camtasia. typical frmats are.mp4a,.mp4b, but can als be.mv files. A vdcast (r vide pdcast) cntains vide and audi and is the mst difficult t create and view. created using digital camcrder and vide editing sftware such as imvie r Mvie Maker typical frmats are.mp4 r.mv. USES FOR PODCASTS IN EDUCATION Sum up a difficult lessn r cncept, r add mre detail than was cvered in class. Interview a guest speaker. 5 Creating Pdcasts with Audacity Step-by-Step Guide ACCESSING A PODCAST There are a few ways t access a pdcast: Dwnlad a stand-alne pdcast frm a link n a webpage Subscribe by clicking n an RSS link lcated n a webpage. Examples f RSS links include: Search fr pdcasts using a pdcatcher like itunes r ipdderx and then subscribe t it. The LAME MP3 encder which allws Audacity t exprt.mp3 files. An internal micrphne r a micrphne plugged int yur cmputer s micrphne-in jack. A set f headphnes plugged int yur cmputer s headphnes jack, OR A headphne/micrphne headset A server n which t pst the finished pdcast Page 5 f 9 As f 10/18/07

6 Creating Pdcasts with Audacity Step-by-Step Guide INSTALLATION: Audacity is installed n the training cmputers and in the Instructinal Technlgy Lab in UCB 120. Hwever, t use it n yur wn cmputer yu will need t dwnlad and install tw items (please fllw the instructins prvided with the dwnlads): Audacity Windws: Mac: LAME MP3 Encder: RECORDING: 1. Open Audacity, if it s nt already pen. 2. Click n the red buttn (identified by a circle) t begin recrding. An audi track will appear. Page 6 f 9 As f 10/18/07

Click the green buttn (identified by an arrw) t play the clip and test that the audi is gd. Yu might have t adjust the micrphne, either fr recrding vlume r distance, depending upn the prblem. T delete the track click the x in the tp left-hand crner f the audi track, then re-recrd. Recrding vlume can be adjusted frm the Mixing tlbar. Rules f recrding in Audacity: i) Once yu ve stpped recrding yu cannt restart recrding n the same track. T extend the track yu can recrd a separate track, then cut and paste. ii) If yu already have ne track recrded, Audacity will recrd t a new track belw the first. SELECTION AND EDITING: 1. T select a prtin f the audi track, click n the Selectin tl. 2. Click and drag acrss the desired area. T test that yu have the right selectin click the green buttn. 3. T adjust the selectin, mve the cursr ver the start r end f the selectin until it becmes a pinting finger. 4. Click and drag t change the selectin. 5. T edit, d ne f the fllwing: Delete: push the Delete buttn n yur keybard r chse Edit > Delete frm the menu bar. This ptin deletes the selectin withut cpying it t the clipbard. Cut: chse Edit > Cut frm the menu bar, r click the cut buttn. selectin and places it n the clipbard. This ptin remves the Cpy: chse Edit > Cpy frm the menu bar, r click the cpy buttn. In rder fr thers t play yur pdcast yu will need t exprt it ut as an.mp3 file. 1. Chse File > Exprt as MP3 frm the menu bar. The Save MP3 File As dialg bx will pen. 2. Enter a file name and lcatin. Nte: T save the Audacity prject file fr future editing, chse File > Save Prject frm the menu bar. UPLOADING PODCAST: There are tw chices when it cmes t making the pdcast available t yur students: 1) uplading it t the pdcast server r, 2) adding it t yur curse. UPLOADING PODCAST TO THE UHH SERVER: This ptin makes yur pdcast a true pdcast that students can subscribe t and which will be dwnladed t itunes autmatically whenever yu add a new episde. 1. Uplad pdcasts t yur accunt at (refer t the separate Psting Pdcasts t the Server step-by-step guide). 3. Prvide yur students with the URL abve. After students lgin they can click n ne f the RSS feeds and add yur pdcast t their itunes. ADDING AUDIO FILE TO YOUR COURSE: This ptin is nt true pdcasting as students cannt subscribe t it and it will nt be autmatically dwnladed t itunes when yu add a new episde. The students will have t lgin t yur curse and click n each episde link when yu prvide access t it. Nte: The fllwing steps are being prvided fr a WebCT curse as they are standardized. T add the audi file t yur myuh r ther curse website cmplete the usual steps yu fllw t add files and links. 1. Within WebCT, navigate t the lcatin where yu want the link t appear. 2. Click n Add page r tl frm the right-hand menu. The Add Page r Tl screen will appear. 3. In the Pages clumn, click n Single Page. The Add Single Page screen will appear. 4. Cmplete the frm. In the Page Filename sectin, click the Brwse ptin, uplad yur.mp3 file t WebCT, and then click the Add Selected buttn. Page 8 f 9 As f 10/18/07
