1 Spanish II Instructional Pacing Guide Killeen ISD Course Goal The goal of the Spanish Level II course is to engage students in a novice high-level classroom-learning environment. The focus of the course is communication, using Spanish. Course Objective: The objective of this course is characterized by the ability to thoroughly review the basic elements of Spanish level I, and designed to guide students to improve upon previously learned skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish so that they can build a strong foundation for communication. Culture, history, current events, and geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and composition. This course will be conducted in Spanish (40%) and in English (60%). By the end of SPN II course, students should be able to use target language as follows: 1. Read a novice high level written text such as letters, stories, newspaper and magazine articles. 2. Answer in complete sentences reading comprehension questions 3. Write and informal letter 4. Write a 80 to 100 word assay 5. Be able to engage on an informal and formal conversation Classroom activities will include paired and grouped activities, simulations, role-playing, daily warm-ups, dictations, story telling, games, songs, skits, plays, videos and presentations. Assessments will be used to show the Level II students what they have learned, as well as what they can do with the information they have acquired. All the above information finds its foundation on the ACTFL 5 C s. And vertical aliment where possible. Page 1

2 ACTFL 5 C s 1. Communications Students engage and respond to verbal cues in Spanish. Understand interpret simple dialogue. 2. Culture Students gain knowledge of people's, customs, holidays, foods, and history of Spanish speaking countries. They understand the culture of other people. 3. Connections Across disciplines, technology, numbers, math, geography, cultural similarity, foods. 4. Comparisons Students compare and contrast culture, grammar, and concept of gender and number agreement of nouns. 5. Communities Students are encouraged to use the Spanish language out in the local community, or in bi-lingual or multi-lingual communities. ** 1 st week of school activities: During the first week of school, in addition to introduce and reinforce your classroom, school, and District students expectations, also review prior learned parts of speech, and basic vocabulary, to include numbers, present tense.
