We will briefly talk abut the prgram installatin, initial startup, cnfiguratin and use. AVG Anti-Virus Free Editin is prvided free-f-charge, and its functinality is limited. All functins prvided within the AVG Free crrespnd t the AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus Basic Interface level. While using AVG Free yu might discver yu wuld like t have access t further and extended functinality f AVG as prvided within the AVG 7.5 prducts. Then, please visit the Grisft website at fr infrmatin n AVG 7.5 purchase ptins AVG Free Detectin Technlgies The Anti-Virus cmpnent f AVG Free uses the fllwing technlgies t detect cmputer viruses: Scanning - searching fr character strings that are characteristic f a given virus Heuristic analysis - dynamic emulatin f the scanned bject s instructins in a virtual cmputer envirnment Generic detectin - detectin f instructins characteristic f the given virus/grup f viruses Where just a single technlgy might fall shrt f detecting r identifying a virus, AVG Free cmbines several technlgies t ensure that yur cmputer is prtected. AVG Free is als able t analyze and detect executable applicatins r DLL libraries that culd be ptentially unwanted within the system. We call such threats Ptentially Unwanted Prgrams (PUP). Such a prgram culd, fr example, be sme kind f spyware, adware etc. Upn the user's request, AVG is able t remve such prgrams r blck access t them. Furthermre, AVG Free scans yur system registry fr suspicius entries, temprary Internet files and tracking ckies, and allws yu t treat all ptentially harmful items in the same way as any ther infectin AVG Free Levels f Prtectin There are many ways a virus can enter yur cmputer. Fr example, a virus cntained in an incming message is, upn receipt f the message, activated and stred n yur hard disk, frm where it can subsequently spread. An antivirus applicatin which cncentrates nly n a single level f detectin might fail in islating the virus. AVG Free allws yu t perfrm antivirus checks n multiple levels such as when yu receive yur electrnic mail, as well as when yu are wrking with files n yur cmputer. Yu can als perfrm a check n demand. The fllwing list utlines each level:

4 4 a) Scanner Checks incming and utging mail by using plug-ins designed fr the mst frequently used prgrams. The Scanner is an additinal prgram fr electrnic mail mnitring; it can run in fully autmatic mde r yu can cnfigure it accrding t yur specific needs (cnfiguratin is limited in the free versin). The Scanner is designed fr applicatins supprting the POP3/SMTP prtcls. When detected, viruses are mved t the Virus Vault (where they are quarantined). b) Resident Shield The Resident Shield scans files as they are cpied, pened r saved. When the Resident Shield discvers a virus in a file that is accessed, it stps the peratin currently being perfrmed and des nt allw the virus t activate itself. The Resident Shield, laded in the memry f yur cmputer during system startup, als prvides vital prtectin fr the system areas f yur cmputer. c) Tests Scanning is a crucial part f AVG functinality. Yu can run n-demand tests r schedule the daily test t run at a cnvenient time. The full versin f AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus als allws further ptins fr scanning an scheduling. 6 6 2. The Installatin Prcess T dwnlad the installatin file f AVG Anti-Virus Free Editin visit the AVG Free website at and fllw the main menu dwnlad link. The installatin prcess will lead yu thrugh the fllwing steps: License Agreement - read and cnfirm yu understand and accept the license agreement. Otherwise the installatin prcess will be canceled. Select Installatin Type - tw types f installatin are available: Standard Installatin - recmmended; will autmatically install AVG with the predefined cnfiguratin f all its cmpnents. Custm Installatin - allws yu t change the default prgram cnfiguratin preset by prgram vendr. Can be nly recmmended t experienced users. Persnalize AVG - enter yur name, and cmpany name. Nte: yur AVG Free license number will already be entered. Installatin Summary - ffers an verview f all installatin parameters. Applicatin Terminatin- sme f the prgrams that are currently running n yur PC may cnflict with the AVG installatin prcess and have t be terminated. Nte: Shuld the installatin fail fr sme reasn, yu will see the Details buttn in the dialg windw. Click the buttn t display further diagnstic infrmatin. This data tgether with the installatin lg file AVG7INST.LOG (stred in the system s TEMP directry) will help yu slve pssible installatin prblems. After installatin, AVG Free cnfiguratin is set up s that it prvides ptimal anti-virus prtectin. We strngly recmmend that yu keep t the default cnfiguratin unless yu have an actual reasn t change it! There are significant differences and limitatins in cmparisn with cmmercial (full) licenses f AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus, and ther AVG 7.5 prducts. 7 7 3. AVG Free First Run 3.1. First Run Wizard When yu first install AVG Free n yur cmputer, the AVG First Run Wizard pps up t help yu with the after installatin settings. Thugh yu can set all f the suggested parameters later n, it is recmmended t take the wizard s tur t secure yur cmputer s anti-virus prtectin in a simple way. The wizard will ffer yu t: Perfrm an immediate update (mre in 8 Prgram Updates) Create a rescue disk - t scan and clean files n yur cmputer and restre system areas in MS-DOS mde (frm Windws XP nwards the rescue disk feature is nt supprted any mre) Specify the parameters f a daily scanning Perfrm a virus scan (mre in 87 Tests) And register yur cpy f AVG Free Fllw the steps described in each f the wizard s windws: 3.2. 8 8 4. AVG Test Center The AVG Test Center prvides access t mst AVG Free virus prtectin features: updating, scanning, task scheduling, and prgram cnfiguratin. The AVG Test Center pens with the fllwing envirnment: in the AVG Test Center tp sectin yu can see the Security status bar with the AVG Free status infrmatin. There are three pssible signs: Yur cmputer is fully prtected, up t date and all installed cmpnents are wrking prperly One r mre cmpnents are incrrectly cnfigured and yu shuld pay attentin t their prperties/settings. The prblem cmpnents will be listed in the status errr message. Indicates, that yu have decided t ignre the reprted faulty status f ne f the cmpnents. Nte: T quickly pen the AVG Cntrl Center, simply duble click the Security status sectin Left Menu - Quick Links By default, in the AVG Test Center quick links menu yu will find the fllwing items: Cntrl Center - launches the Cntrl Center

Within the AVG Anti-Virus Free Editin yu are nt allwed t create yur wn schedules. Nte: All tasks in the AVG Free Scheduled Tasks dialg are defined as Basic mde tasks, i.e. the task scheduling ptins crrespnd t the ptins prvided within the AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus Basic Interface, and are rather limited. Test Results - prvides an verview f results f recently run tests. 11 11 5. AVG Cntrl Center The AVG Cntrl Center is the AVG Free main cntrl cmpnent. The AVG Cntrl Center is launched each time a user lgs n. Yu can use it t specify varius AVG Free parameters and t mnitr the status f each cmpnent. In the tp sectin f the AVG Cntrl Center yu will find the Security status bar prviding inf n AVG Free status. There are three pssible signs: Yur cmputer is fully prtected, up t date and all installed cmpnents are wrking prperly One r mre cmpnents are incrrectly cnfigured and yu shuld pay attentin t their prperties/settings. Als, yu can find the infrmatin n AVG Free status frm the system tray icn. The full clr (yellw, black, red, and green) f the AVG Cntrl Center system tray icn n yur Windws Taskbar indicates that all AVG cmpnents are active and fully functinal. Gray icn clring indicates a prblem (inactive cmpnent, errr status, ld virus database, etc.). Duble-click the system tray icn t pen the main AVG Cntrl Center screen t edit a cmpnent AVG Cntrl Center - Envirnment The AVG Cntrl Center quick links (left menu) ffer shrtcuts leading t the AVG Free main cmpnents and functinalities, as well as the menu items in the AVG Test Center described in chapter 4.1 Left menu - Quick Links.

12 AVG Cntrl Center - Cmpnents In the main bx f the AVG Cntrl Center yu can see a list f cmpnents cntrlled frm the AVG Cntrl Center. T administer the selected cmpnent, just click the respective list item, and use the perating buttns in the bttm sectin f the AVG Cntrl Center windw. Whenever a cmpnent s state is in errr (e.g. the virus database has nt been updated recently, and expired), the cmpnent s panel within the AVG Cntrl Center gets highlighted in red clr t ntify yu, and the prgram system tray icn turns grey. It is recmmended that yu pay attentin t this kind f ntice, and keep the state f all cmpnents ptimal in rder t ensure the prper functining f yur AVG Anti-Virus Free Editin. T repair the cmpnent s status, use the AVG Cntrl Center applicatin. The AVG Cntrl Center allws management f these AVG Free cmpnents: Anti-Virus - cntains infrmatin abut all currently knwn viruses. Imprtant: Updates are issued several times a week accrding t the current state f virus attack. If the virus database is lder than 7 days, it is cnsidered t be utdated. T signal this, the cmpnent changes its internal state t errr and turns red. Please remember that reliable anti-virus prtectin can be achieved nly if yu update yur anti-virus system regularly and frequently. Scheduler - cntrls planned task initiatin. Resident Shield - perfrms n-access scanning f files and dcuments. Virus Vault - wrks as a stre f suspect/infected bjects, and prvides ptins fr their further treatment. Update Manager - cntrls AVG Free updates perfrmance. Shell Extensin - activates AVG Free functinality in the Windws Explrer applicatin s that yu can scan lcatins and bjects within the Windws Explrer file brwser by clicking the right muse buttn and selecting the Scan with AVG Anti-Virus Free Editin ptin. Scanner - scans incming and utging messages. We wuld like t remind yu f the AVG Free limitatins: sme AVG Free cmpnents cnfiguratin and functinality is restricted. Yu can reach the AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus ptins in full extent by purchasing the cmmercial versin f AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus please refer t the Grisft website at fr mre infrmatin.

13 13 6. AVG Virus Vault The AVG Virus Vault applicatin is a safe envirnment fr management f suspect r infected bjects detected during AVG Free scanning. Once an infected bject is detected during scanning, and AVG Free is nt able t heal it autmatically, yu are asked t decide what t d with the suspect bject. The recmmended slutin is t mve the bject t the AVG Virus Vault fr further treatment. Viruses can be detected by any f varius AVG Free cmpnents, such as Resident Shield and Scanner. Viruses can als be fund when running a test frm the AVG Test Interface r even when using Windws Explrer What shuld I d when a virus is detected? Whenever AVG Free detects a virus, we recmmend that yu try t heal the infected bject as the first ptin. When AVG Free is unable t heal the virus (this may ccur fr any f many reasns, including the distrtin f the riginal file by the virus) use the next alternative mve it t the Virus Vault. The last ptin is t delete the infected bject (which is ften the virus itself) Why can t every virus be healed? In rder fr a file t be healed, it must be returned t exactly its riginal frm! Because f this, nt all files can be healed. The reasn fr this is that sme viruses d nt infect the riginal file but rewrite it, r they create cpies f themselves. As such, it wuld nt be pssible t re-acquire the riginal frm f the file (it wuld nt be cmplete r wuld nt exist at all nce the virus is remved) r t ensure that the functinality f such a "healed" bject was as intended in the riginal (e.g. in an executable prgram). In these cases, the nly pssibility t ensure that yur data is prtected is t remve the infected files frm the (hard) disk and, when pssible, restre the riginal file frm yur back-up What shuld I d with an unknwn virus? When AVG Free has designated a file as being suspicius r as being infected by an unknwn virus, yu can the file t Grisft (virus@grisft.cm). Yu can d s directly frm the Virus Vault. Use this address t send files that yu suspect f cntaining a virus, even when AVG Free has nt detected any viruses. Fr additinal help cncerning viruses, please cnsult the FAQ sectin n the Grisft Website at AVG Virus Vault Envirnment Every detected infected bject shuld be mved t the Virus Vault. Within the Virus Vault yu can explre the bject, delete it, r heal and restre the bject if the cure has been implemented already. Als, yu can send the bject t the AVG Free vendr fr in-depth analysis. The Virus Vault ffers a review f bjects that have been detected as suspicius r infected, and prvides this infrmatin abut them: bject status (infected / cured), bject type (bject / back-up), virus name, bject s riginal lcatin, date and time f the bject s detectin, file name, and file size.

14 14 7. Tests One f the AVG Free main features is n-demand scanning. On-demand tests are designed t scan varius parts f yur cmputer whenever suspicin f virus infectin arises. The recmmended interval fr cmplete system scanning is at least nce a day. All the n-demand-scanning tests are run frm the AVG Test Center envirnment. Tests can be als planned and run accrding t the preset schedule. Yu can change the test cnfiguratin accrding t yur needs if yu have an actual reasn t d s. Hwever, fr less experienced cmputer users it is strngly recmmended t keep the default test cnfiguratin. Different test types are available with vendr preset parameters, by default: 7.1. System Areas Test The System Areas Test will scan all system areas f yur cmputer, and will detect and pssibly heal r remve any virus fund Cmplete Test The Cmplete Test will scan all hard drives f yur cmputer, and will detect and pssibly heal r remve any virus fund Selected Areas Test The Selected Areas Test will scan all selected areas f yur cmputer: yu can specify the flders and files in yur cmputer s navigatin tree. The Selected Areas Test target will detect and pssibly heal r remve any virus fund Scanner Scanner (EMS) checks all incming/utging messages. This cmpnent is cntrlled frm AVG Cntrl Center. EMS wrks as a filter between the prgrams yu use (e.g. MS Outlk Express, Incredimail, The BAT!, etc.) and yur Internet/ cmmunicatin prvider. By default, right after installatin EMS runs in fully autmatic mde, e.g. it des nt require any further cnfiguratin. Hwever, if the cmmunicatin is encrypted using SSL, it is nt pssible t run the EMS in autmatic mde; yu need t manually define EMS parameters. Fr details n the AVG EMS manual cnfiguratin please refer t the FAQ sectin f the Grisft website at Warning: If yu wrk with Webmail (such as htmail.cm, msn.cm, yah.cm, etc.), yu are using yur Internet brwser (fr example, MS Internet Explrer) nly t access yur bx, and yur attachments are nt dwnladed t yur cmputer until yu access them. The main risk that yu face in this case cmes frm message attachments. Because f this, yur is nt scanned by the available plug-ins, and scanning f the ptentially dangerus attachments takes place as yu access them. We recmmend using AVG Free t check any executable file r MS Office dcuments that yu receive thrugh electrnic mail.

15 15 8. Prgram Updates Any anti-virus system can guarantee reliable prtectin nly if it is updated regularly. AVG Free prvides a reliable and fast update service with quick respnse times. Mdern viruses spread very quickly and infect huge numbers f wrkstatins in almst n time Update Levels AVG Free ffers three update levels t select frm: Pririty update The pririty update cntains changes necessary fr a reliable anti-virus prtectin. Typically, it des nt include any changes t the cde and updates nly the virus definitin database. This update shuld be applied as sn as it is available. Recmmended update The recmmended update cntains varius prgram changes, fixes and imprvements. Optinal update The ptinal update reflects changes that are nt necessary fr prgram functinality texts, updates f the setup cmpnent, etc. Optinal updates can be dwnladed and applied tgether with recmmended updates but their imprtance is rather lw. Within the AVG Free yu are nt allwed t create yur wn update schedules. The update is run daily, and yu can nly decide at what time it shuld be started Update Types Yu can distinguish between tw types f update: On demand update An n demand update is an immediate AVG Free update that can be perfrmed any time the need arises. Scheduled update Within the AVG Free a preset update schedule is cnfigured by default. The planned update is perfrmed nce a day.

Firewall Settings In case yu have installed AVG Free n yur cmputer, and yu are running a firewall at the same time, yu might be experiencing prblems while sending/receiving messages and/r AVG Free updates. Therefre we wuld like t prvide yu with the settings instructins and recmmendatins fr the fllwing firewalls: Windws XP built-in firewall Keri Persnal Firewall Zne Alarm Pr firewall 9.1. Windws XP built-in firewall Typically, the Windws XP built-in firewall default settings crrespnd very well with the AVG Free cnfiguratin. Mst prbably n prblems will ccur at all. Hwever, shuld yu run up against prblems, please fllw these steps: a) Windws XP Firewall Settings Open the Windws Firewall settings dialg windw: Start / Settings / Cntrl Panels / Windws Firewall On the General tab make sure the D nt allw exceptins ptin is nt selected. b) Define Exceptins Switch t the Exceptins tab with the list f applicatins that are blcked t access t the Internet. Yu need t allw access t Internet fr all AVG Anti- Virus applicatins. T d s, mark each check bx related t an AVG applicatin in the list f prgrams and services (see the fllwing screensht).

17 17 Fr AVG Free the applicatins t be selected frm the list and marked as allwed are: AVG Free Cntrl Center (file avgcc.exe) AVG Free fr Windws (file avgw.exe) avginet.exe avgemc.exe If these applicatins are nt listed in the list f exceptins, yu need t add them manually. This can be dne using the Add Prgram buttn: c) Add a New Prgram A new dialg windw pens prviding a list f prgrams that can be add t the previusly seen Windws Firewall list f exceptins. Select the AVG applicatins frm the list, and cnfirm adding it t the Windws Firewall list f exceptins by pressing the OK buttn (see the fllwing screensht).

18 18 In case yu are nt able t see any AVG applicatin in the prgram list, yu have t add them manually. Click the Brwse buttn, and find the abve listed files (avgw.exe, avgcc.exe, avginet.exe, and avgemc.exe) in the AVG Free prgram flder (by default C:\Prgram Files\Grisft\AVG Free): Cnfirm adding the selected files by pressing the OK buttn in the Add a Prgram dialg windw Keri Persnal Firewall With the Keri Persnal Firewall yu will prbably need t cnfigure the settings s that it is allwed fr the AVG Free (and its applicatins) t cnnect t the Internet (send/receive data), and t launch ther applicatins (t update). T cnfigure the Keri Persnal Firewall settings, fllw these steps: a) Run Keri Persnal Firewall b) Netwrk Security In the Netwrk Security item (left menu), Applicatin tab (tp menu) yu are able t verview a list f prgrams with the infrmatin n whether these are allwed t cnnect t the Internet. In the list, verify that all AVG applicatins are labeled as permit. If nt, yu need t change the AVG applicatins status. T d s, right click n every item and select the Permit ptin frm the cntext menu.

19 19 c) System Security In the System Security item (left menu), Applicatin tab (tp menu) yu are able t verview a list f prgrams with the infrmatin n whether these are allwed t launch ther applicatin. Again, yu need t make sure all AVG applicatins listed are labeled as permit t launch ther applicatins (e.g. updates). If nt, yu need t change the AVG applicatins status. T d s, right click n every item and select the Permit ptin frm the cntext menu. Cnfirm all changes by pressing the Apply buttn Zne Alarm Pr With the Zne Alarm Pr yu will prbably need t cnfigure the settings s that it is allwed fr the AVG Free (and its applicatins) t cnnect t the Internet

T cnfigure the Zne Alarm Pr settings, fllw these steps: a) Run Zne Alarm Pr b) Prgram Cntrl In the Prgram Cntrl item (left menu), Prgrams tab (tp menu) yu are able t verview a list f prgrams with the infrmatin n whether these are allwed t cnnect t the Internet. In the list, verify that all AVG applicatins are labeled as allwed (green cnfirmatin mark). If nt, yu need t change the AVG applicatins status.
