1 LCVP LINK MODULES The Written Examinatin will take place n the first Wednesday in May Read a cpy f yur Prtfli f cursewrk, as it is an excellent revisin tl fr the written paper. Read the Prtfli the night befre the examinatin and if yu have the pprtunity, skim read the prtfli n the mrning f the examinatin. Ensure that yu are familiar with the cntent and layut f all prtfli items. Remember apprximately 16,000 students will sit the LCVP examinatin this year. T achieve a distinctin can be difficult, s it s extremely imprtant t revise and prepare adequately fr the Assessment. On average 81% f students use their LCVP as their sixth subject fr CAO pints. Ensure t practice questins, be aware f the marking schemes n examinatins.ie. Ensure that yu d nt repeat pints. Als the State Examinatins Cmmissin has published the Chief Examiners Reprt n the LCVP fr Lg n t t access it. This reprt prvides excellent infrmatin and statistics that can help imprve results and highlights frequent mistakes. Recmmendatins are set ut fr bth teachers and students. When answering questins n activities in the written paper, ensure t fllw a lgical sequence, in particular fr activities. Use the Learning cycle apprach (Pre -experience, Experience and Pst-experience) and articulate the knwledge and skills gained. Students need t ensure that they are familiar with all the Specific learning utcmes. Interestingly there are 93 Specific Learning utcmes. Hwever quite a number f them are repeated thrughut the syllabus, e.g. Link the learning t Leaving Certificate subjects, evaluate activities, planning, Reprt writing and invite a visitr t the classrm. The written examinatin, which is ffered at cmmn level is wrth 40% and is marked ut f a ttal f 160 marks. Practice past exam questins. The Written Examinatin is f tw and a half hurs duratin, cmprises f three sectins as fllws:. Sectin A: Audi Visual (30 marks), prfiling a business r cmmunity enterprise r rganisatin. The six minute DVD is shwn at the beginning f the examinatin. Students answer eight questins. Remember yu are assessed n : What yu see What yu hear Apply yur LCVP Knwledge, learning and skills Read the questins carefully befre the DVD cmmences and underline the main parts. Ensure t take ntes n the rugh wrk sheet n the inside cver f the answer bklet. Remember the last few questins carry a substantial amunt f the marks. In fact Questin 7 and Questin 8 are wrth 12 marks. Therefre they require detail, ensuring t elabrate and always give examples if apprpriate. Ensure nt t use repetitin f pints. 1
2 Sectin B (30 marks) This cmprises f a Case Study cvering tpics such as a prfile f an entrepreneur; a business/cmmunity/vluntary rganisatin; an verview f a lcal area; a scial r ecnmic issue. The Case Study fr 2011: Sweet dreams fr Sara, has been sent t all schls. Students must have an in-depth understanding f all aspects. A mind map is available n and click n Business and Enterprise, which includes LCVP. Als dwnlad the past examinatin papers and slutins. Why nt draft yur wn mind map and use the case t revise the curse by asking relevant questins. The case study can be a vehicle t revise all the specific learning utcmes.( SLO s.). Students are required t answer three questins. Last year, the three questins had mre parts t them. with tw t three subdivisins in each. Questin 1 is fllwed by i) and ii), similarly Questin 2 i) and ii) and Questin 3 i), ii) and iii). Read the questins carefully. Stp and think. Underline the imprtant parts. Students must give details and always elabrate. Students are advised t spend 25 minutes n the Case study. Sectin A and Sectin B are cmpulsry, which means yu must answer the Audi Visual and Case Study questins. Sectin C (100 marks): There are six multi-part general questins cvering the full range f the syllabus. Students are required t answer fur questins. T assist in chsing questins the exam paper has a summary and index f questins. Yur chice f questins is vital. Chse the questins which can deliver the mst marks fr yu. Ensure yu can answer all parts. Take accunt f mark allcatins fr questins and parts f questins and plan the use f time accrdingly. A student must pay particular attentin t timing. It s imprtant nt t spend t much time n ne part f the questin. It is recmmended that yu allw apprximately 23 minutes per questin. If yu find yurself ging ver the time, it wuld be advisable t leave it and mve nt the next questin. If there s time at the end f the examinatin yu can always return t it. Always State yur answer, explain yur answer, at least tw different pints and give an example supprting yur answer. Dn t leave blank spaces, ensure t attempt all parts f the fur questins. When revising r practicing exam questins use Venn diagrams t practice cmpare and cntrast type questins r explain the similarities and differences r distinguish between tw cncepts. Cmpare / similarities - what is cmmn t bth Cntrast / differences / distinguish - what is unique t each 2
3 Ensure yu understand the difference between terms like State, Explain, Outline, Describe, Analyse, Discuss, Evaluate, Illustrate. State simply means t say briefly r define what a term means. If explaining ask yurself wuld anther persn understand this cncept /idea / term nw that I have explained it. Have I made it clear? T utline means t give a cmplete verview s yu need t cver the entire cncept. This is why a brief utline is ften asked fr. Analysing means yu break smething dwn int its cnstituent parts. T describe smething is like drawing a picture with wrds. A discussin lks at smething frm a number f sides r frm a number f pints f view. T evaluate smething means t make a judgment n it. Make sure that yur judgment is infrmed i.e. yu must be able t back it up with evidence. Ensure that yu give advantages, benefits, disadvantages, risks. T illustrate means t shw and give examples. Breakdwn f sme themes f the LCVP, hwever ensure t revise all elements f the LCVP Planning is an integral part f the LCVP. Ensure t cver all areas f Planning. Define planning, Why Plan?, The advantages and challenges f a plan. Can yu draft a Business plan? What are the main headings. Can yu draft an Enterprise/ Actin Plan. Evaluatin is als an integral part f the LCVP. Ensure t answer questins carefully. Why evaluate?, The advantages and challenges f Evaluating. Hw t evaluate? Advantages and disadvantages f methds. When evaluating use the DAR apprach. Nte: nly use mnemnics if they suit yur learning style. Describe: Reflect n the experience, What happened?, What did yu d? Did yu meet yur bjectives? Assess: Think back n the experience, what went well?, what did nt wrk? Was it useful? What subjects were useful? What abut teamwrk? Recmmend: What wuld yu recmmend fr future activities? Are there any fllw n activities. Skills: Ensure students can articulate skills they develped. Enterprise Educatin: This mdule intrduces Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. Experiencing what is invlved in setting up and running an enterprise. Als intrducing Vluntary Organisatins and finally run an Enterprise activity. Review the legislatin. There are three specific pieces f legislatin n the syllabus 1.
