Cityporto Padova Freight mobility in urban areas A successful model of citylogistics Comune di Padova Provincia di Padova Regione del Veneto
What Cityporto is A really operating service of delivery of goods in urban area carried out with a fleet of hybrid and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas - engines) vehicles (vans); This Citylogistics service makes the consolidation of the deliveries of different transport operators to the old town, meanwhile reducing the traffic of freight transport vehicles.
General assumptions All the players involved, transport operators included, agree that nowadays it is essential to face the urban distribution in innovative terms, that is to say: 1. with higher rationalization, so having less vehicles circulating on the roads to transport the same quantity of goods 2. with mobility regulations to support city logistics initiatives by the involved Municipalities 3. With an environmentally friendly fleet
The role played by local Public Bodies Protocol of Agreement between the Municipality, the Province and the Chamber of Commerce of Padova, the local Public Transport Company (APS Mobilità), and Interporto di Padova Industrial Plan Local rules on freight mobility in benefit of Cityporto Padova Public fundings Law 36/99 Regione Veneto Regulations for the rationalization of freight transport and distribution aiming to reduce air pollution in urban areas Beginning of of Cityporto Padova activities 21 aprile 2004
Cityporto s key of success Stakeholder involvement Full support of Municipality Industrial plan focused on economic sustainability Voluntary subscription of the operators to the service Location of a freight village close to the urban area Gradual steps of implementation of the activities
The role of Interporto Padova Cityporto transit point is located inside the freight village area of Interporto Padova, just 2 miles outside the City Centre and close to the major highways. Strategic location Availability of logistics platforms Neutral role with freight transport operators Development of a dedicated IT System for Cityporto services
Padova Cityporto model The freight transport operators deliver their goods with destination to the city centre Limited Traffic Zone and closer urban ring to a logistics platform in Interporto Padova dedicated to the consolidation of the deliveries. IT System support the managing of the daily delivery plans: Cityporto eco-friendly vehicles leave the platform and cover the «last mile» having maximized their loading capacity in benefit of reduced number of delivery trips at best. Operators Transport on its own account Other

SMARTSET a consortium by and for practitioners
SMARTSET APPLICATION SITES a short introduction In SMARTSET all eight application sites start from different local situations to develop sustainable business models for freight distribution and increase the use of clean vehicles, inter alia by stimulation through incentives and restrictions. This approach is unique to SMARTSET and will be tested in both leader and follower sites. A leader site has already tested some kind of city logistic model before and has previously started up a local freight group (Gothenburg, Newcastle and Padua), whereas follower sites are about to start building up business models and test delivery approaches (Berlin, Forlì, Graz, Rome and Sundsvall). SMARTSET provides a platform for the transfer of actions and knowledge from leader sites to follower sites, as well as for the exchange of experiences.
SMARTSET APPLICATION SITES Padua, Italy Our activities within SMARTSET project Interporto Padova participates in SMARTSET with the aim to share knowledge on our business model for the management of Cityporto Padova with other EuropeanPartners and to receive in the project framework new input and ideas to develop the activity and improve the use of Cityporto UCC (Urban Consolidation Centre). Project activity: WP2: Development of delivery services to new segment (parcel and perishable), extension to nonurban areas and integration between the citylogistics and the rail-road transshipment activity. WP3: Synergy with Stakeholders to keep up monitored the activity of Cityporto and finding togheter further possible development of the service which will benefit the urban mobility. WP4: Possibleenlargement of Cityportofleet with e-vehicles to test the new services implemented in the project (depending on resources availability).
