3 Welcome to the Adult Education Course Directory for 2015/16 There are lots of exciting courses on offer to improve your skills and qualifications or to improve your well-being. Aisha who has been studying with BAES has some advice about why you should join a course... Councillor Penny Holbrook Cabinet Member: Skills, Learning and Culture Aisha s story... Hello everyone, If you ve picked up this directory you re probably toying with the idea of enrolling on a course with Birmingham Adult Education Service My advice to you would be Do it! Do it for yourself From my first ESOL course to my recent GCSEs I have been treated with nothing but respect and kindness by the staff at BAES. I ve learned more, so much more than the English language and I have re-gained my self-respect. In September 2015 I am starting a degree in Social Work at Wolverhampton University, something which would have been an impossible dream without the help of the BAES team. I have been inspired by some wonderful tutors and their belief in me has helped me smash through a number of barriers in my life. Do it for your children My children are absolutely thrilled by the changes they have seen in me since I became a learner with BAES. We now regularly settle down to our homework together and I love it when they ask for my help. When my nine year old son kissed me for luck the night before my GCSE English exam I felt I could look him in the eye, secure in the knowledge that, with the help of BAES, I ve given him back the mother he deserves. Do it for fun I ve shared my educational journey with scores of other learners whose stories echo mine. The groups are small at BAES, so no one needs to feel intimidated and a support network is quickly established. We ve confessed our feelings of inadequacy to one another, we ve helped one another when the work has proved challenging and we ve celebrated one another s successes at every step of the way. We have always found time for laughter and the joy of meeting so many fabulous people has been one of the unexpected delights of my courses. Whether you re considering one of the many leisure courses BAES offers or whether, like me, you re looking for an academic qualification you will find BAES a lively, stimulating environment. The key to your future might just lie within the pages of this brochure So what are you waiting for? Do it now!

This led him to wanting to continue learning and he came to BAES in Brian sees his learning as a step to developing his career as a Transport Manager. He is keen to add to his English and computer qualifications by starting a Business Administration course. Brian is aware of how easily he could have just stayed home, unmotivated to do anything, however attending the courses has enabled him to socialise which is something he has always enjoyed doing. Speaking with Brian his passion not only for his own learning and development but the ability to support others is very evident. He says that his give it a go approach to not taking everything too seriously helps. If he passes that is a bonus and if not he can always try again. Keeping his mind active is the most important thing to him. 7

19 Why I teach Enthusiastic about Maths, enthusiastic about my learners I am passionate about Mathematics and my job is to try and make understanding it fun for my learners. I really enjoy motivating my learners and helping them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of many new and different Maths concepts. The classroom is a great place to share ideas with each other. Teaching is one of those professions that keeps your brain young, allowing you to continue your own journey as a lifelong learner. I love working with people from the many different communities that make Birmingham such an interesting place to live. With every new learner I teach, I think I learn something new too. 20 Where to find a course... A dream worth chasing Back in 2007 Saadi s poetry was being censored in his homeland and this led to the decision to flee to the UK with his wife and children. On settling into life in England Saadi started to dream that one day he would be able to study at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and make a career from his poetry and playing the Ney, a bamboo instrument. To try and achieve this Saadi has to manage all his studies alongside working long hours as a caretaker in a care home. However his dedication and commitment towards gaining a place on his degree course means the dream is becoming more realistic each year that passes. He has so far successfully progressed from ESOL to GCSE English, Maths and Biology. Saadi is courteous and self-effacing and brings an extraordinary depth of analysis to class discussions. Our renaissance man will deserve every success that he will surely achieve. Having seen a BAES advert she decided to go along to her local adult education centre. Not one to do anything half-heartedly she enrolled on IT, Health and Social Care, Interior Design and English Functional Skills courses. She quickly achieved success in all of the subjects and was looking for her next challenge. As Paula s confidence grew she enquired about becoming a volunteer with us and, having been successfully interviewed, started her first position at The Pump Centre assisting in a Second Steps computers class. Paula says that she likes the atmosphere in adult education and learning has given her the ability to find out who she really is and what she is capable of doing. She s really enjoying the voluntary work and her aim now is to start working for a charitable organisation and help to achieve positive actions in her community. 19
