1 ciao 2013/2014 WE GO THE EXTRA MILE COURSES IN THE COMMUNITY Our part-time courses in the community are offered at a variety of centres across the Bradford and Wharfedale areas. A full list of venues can be found on the back page. With courses offered in the morning, afternoon and evening, we aim to ensure that classes fit in with your current work and family commitments. All our courses are delivered by friendly expert tutors at local venues so whether you want to gain a qualification, study for your own personal development, take up a new hobby or simply enjoy meeting people, we will have something for you. Our varied courses range from Arabic to Wine Appreciation; from ICT to Foreign Languages and much more. ENROLLING ON A NON-ACCREDITED COMMUNITY COURSE THOSE WITHIN THE LEARNING FOR LEISURE SECTION It is important when you come to enrol that you have photographic evidence such as a passport, driving licence, bus pass, employment security pass or any ID which shows your name and your photograph to enable us to issue you with an ID card. There is no need to bring a separate photograph; your picture will be taken for your College ID card during the enrolment process. YOU CAN PAY BY CASH, CHEQUE OR CREDIT/DEBIT CARD You will be liable to pay all Tuition Fees and a Administration Fee AT THE TIME OF ENROLMENT. PLEASE NOTE: No fee remission is available on Community Learning Learning for Leisure courses. 5 COURSES IN THE COMMUNITY CREATIVE CRAFTS AND SKILLS Beauty Therapy Level 2 Certificate Awarding Body: NCFE Duration: 30 weeks (3 hours per week) This course will cover the basic anatomy of skin, skin analysis, facial cleanse including mask & massage, completing record & treatment cards, make-up application, eyebrow shaping, and manicure & pedicure. You should have completed the Beauty Care / course or similar VAA723AA, Bolton Royd (Thu ) from 19/09/13 Floral Crafts Level 2 Certificate Awarding Body: NCFE Duration: 30 weeks (3 hours per week) This course would be ideal if you have an interest in floral crafts. If you would like to gain more skills in floral art or you are looking to become self employed, this course is the one for you. You will learn many styles of flower arranging and gain a qualification for your skills. As part of your studies you will be required to produce a portfolio of your work. This portfolio will be used for your accreditation and will become a showcase of your floral work for prospective employers and customers. You should have completed the Floral Crafts / course or similar. We also offer Level 2 Certificate courses in the following foreign languages: Arabic see page 6 Italian see page 7 Japanese see page 8 Spanish see page 9 Cake Decoration Level 2 Certificate Awarding Body: NCFE Duration: 30 weeks (3 hours per week) In this exciting and engaging course you will learn how to decorate cakes. This will include sugar flowers, piping, royal icing, sugar paste, swags and drapes. Other more sophisticated techniques may be covered. There will be a charge for any ingredients and equipment used whilst on the course and this will be discussed with the course tutor. This course is accredited and you will be required to provide a portfolio of evidence to be assessed. The course will develop your awareness of colour including theory and psychology; shape and form and will give you the necessary skills to choose interior finishes including paint, fabric, wall and flooring materials. In addition to this, you will learn the skills for surveying rooms, drawing plans and developing your ideas on paper to scale. You will also understand design research and how to create inspiration boards, to motivate you to create design sheets for presentation. You should have completed the Interior Design / course or similar I have really enjoyed the course. I have learnt a lot and I have made new friends. 6 ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Duration: Variable English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Bradford College offers a dynamic and professional approach to language learning: speaking and listening, reading and writing. Come and improve your English in a supportive and engaging environment, using the latest technology. Our highly qualified teachers will enable you to achieve a qualification in ESOL Skills for Life at an appropriate level and you will have the opportunity to progress to either our vocational or academic courses in the future. Your ESOL course will be six to nine hours a week, depending on which skills you are developing, and may include Functional Mathematics and ICT. You will develop the confidence to communicate effectively in your local community and will engage with other learners from different backgrounds and cultures. We offer ESOL courses from Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 to Level 1, at which stage you will be able to access ESOL with your choice of vocational area. All courses will involve enrichment activities (short residential visits and/or trips to museums etc) as well as career advice and guidance. You will also be able to access a wide range of ESOL resources on our Virtual Learning Environment. YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO PAY TUITION FEES FOR ESOL COURSES IF YOU RECEIVE CERTAIN BENEFITS (SEE PAGE 3) WHAT YOU CAN STUDY Entry Level 1 This is for learners who have some language skills and want to gain a certificate in Speaking and Listening. It may be possible to complete the full qualification (Reading and Writing) if you make enough progress during the year. Your tutor will help you develop the skills required to work towards examinations. You will gain a Cambridge Certificate in Speaking and Listening at Entry Level 1 (or full qualification at Entry Level 1). Entry Level 2 This is for learners who may have been studying before and want to progress with their English skills. You will gain a Cambridge Certificate in ESOL at Entry Level 2 (Speaking and Listening). It may be possible to complete the full qualification (Reading and Writing) if you make enough progress during the year, as well as Functional Skills Mathematics and ICT. Your tutor will assess you and there will be mock examinations to ensure you are ready to take this examination. Entry Level 3 This is for learners wanting to progress to vocational programmes. You will gain a Cambridge Certificate in ESOL at Entry Level 3 (Speaking and Listening). It may be possible to complete the full qualification (Reading and Writing) if you make enough progress during the year, as well as Functional Skills Mathematics and ICT. ESOL Courses for Specific Purposes Bradford College offers short ESOL programmes tailored specifically to your needs and your area of work. Please ask for details. WHAT YOU WILL STUDY All our classes include skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) and Language (Grammar, Vocabulary) practice. Classes are delivered at four different levels from Entry Level 1 (Beginner) to Level 1 (Intermediate). The skills and language used in each class will depend on the level of the class. You will learn about life in the UK (Citizenship). Topics include: History, Geography, Law, Government, Celebrations, Health, Housing, Work and many others. WHO THE COURSES ARE FOR These courses are for adults (aged 19 or over) whose first language is not English, and who are living or trying to settle in the UK. HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED Homework is set at the end of every class. There are regular Module tests throughout the course. You will be working towards examinations at the end of the course. There are three examinations per level (Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing). QUALIFICATION TITLE Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Skills for Life. We also offer other qualifications. COURSE LENGTH Courses start in September and end in June. We may admit new students into classes in November and February depending on the number of spaces available and the ability of the new students. Most of our classes take place during the day, although we also offer evening classes. For course duration and hours please contact us on COURSE AVAILABILITY Our courses are available at the following venues: Old Building Bolton Royd Westbrook Building Park Lane Mayfield Centre Manningham Mills Community Association There are no specific entry requirements; however you must have an awareness of the alphabet and forming letters. You must visit the College to take a short English test and have an interview with an English teacher. Please note that taking a test and having an interview does not guarantee a place in an English class. If the course is full, names are put on a waiting list. At the start of your course, your tutor will give you a course handbook that you will need to keep with you for the duration of your course. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: You might not have to pay tuition fees if you are in receipt of certain benefits. You will only need to pay Admission fee and possible examination costs. If you are eligible to pay fees, the course costs are 2.30 per hour for tuition. This also includes days out, use of the College library and IT facilities. There is an Administration Fee of and an Examination Fee of (applicable to courses leading to an examination only) which you will need to pay when you enrol. You must bring your ID documents, including your passport and any immigration documents you may have, with you and evidence of previous qualifications. Please contact to arrange an interview. Entry Level 2 Student (Speaking and Listening) HOW YOU WILL STUDY You will study in regular classes with other students of the same level. We have a maximum of 16 students per class. You will only be taught the present tense, and we will include vocabulary about social contacts, getting about, holidays and health. We place special emphasis on your speaking and listening skills VAA909AA, Al-Furqaan Education Centre On the Year 1 course you will cover the basic language skills including greetings, personal introduction and basic conversation that can be useful to use when you are on holiday, getting about and meeting local people. There will be more emphasis on speaking and listening VAA908AA, Al-Furqaan Education Centre (Mon ) from 16/09/13 Arabic Year 2 The Arabic Year 2 course is a progression from Arabic Year 1. You will increase your vocabulary and engage in more challenging conversations There will be more emphasis on reading and writing. Grammar is covered as much as possible by using practical situations, so speaking and actively using the language is vital. 8 FOREIGN LANGUAGES Continued Chinese Year 2 Year 2 courses go back to the language and vocabulary you covered in Year 1 and build on it to increase both your knowledge and confidence. You will learn the more challenging past and future tenses and cover reading and writing in more depth. By the end of this year, you will be able to speak and understand Chinese at a basic level. You should have successfully completed Year 1 Chinese or equivalent VAA917AA, Westbrook Building Community Interpreting Level 3 Community Interpreting Level 4 Awarding Body: ASCENTIS Duration: 30 weeks (3 hours per week) This course is suitable for those who are bilingual and either do interpreting work in the public sector and need a national qualification, or those who would be interested in seeking employment in this area. The Public Service areas covered are: Immigration, Health, Education, Social Services. will need to complete an end of year exam in order to achieve the qualification. Any language is welcomed. Fluency in both languages will be assessed at an initial interview. Duration: 30 weeks (2 hours per week) On this course you will increase your confidence and learn the basics or brush up on any existing skills and practise what you have learnt.
