The Basic Principles provide a set of behaviors for putting an organization s shared values into practice to develop a strong network of relationships at every level of the organization. Thurs, 12/6/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Gayle Plank The Leader in Each of Us Today, far-reaching advances in technology, continually increasing customer expectations, and the expansion of the global marketplace are redefining the standards for competitive success. As a result, organizations everywhere face a host of challenges, many of which were not visible even a few years ago. One of the key methods for responding to these new challenges is to make leadership the responsibility of everyone in the organization. This is an awareness unit that defines what is common to leadership roles regardless of the individual s specific assignment or position in the organization. Thurs, 1/10/2013, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Judie Foster-Lupkin Marketing Essentials for Nonprofits Every nonprofit organization needs to understand and promote its brand, whether it is seeking funding, advocating for a cause, or simply trying to reach more clients. This course provides a broad overview of the differences between marketing, advertising, public relations and other promotional tools. Explore new ways to reach the wide range of publics that interact with your organization, and learn business terms that will increase your confidence when working with advertising vendors, marketing consultants and media representatives. 5 Elective courses Maintaining the Force: Effective Volunteer Management In any community, most service programs are run by volunteers. Consequently, as a community leader your knowledge of volunteer management is a necessary tool. You will discover when recruiting volunteers that people volunteer for many reasons. When you know and understand these reasons, you are better able to utilize volunteers time and more effectively promote a healthy program. Did you know that recognition is an essential element to a sense of job satisfaction? Pay is not in the reward column-recognition, leadership opportunities, and increased responsibilities are. Continuously evaluate your volunteer program and the volunteers. Jobs change, volunteers needs change, and program criteria change. Thurs, 10/11/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Beth Forkner Moe Board Roles and Responsibilities An effective non-profit organization must have a strong board that knows what their duties are and how to carry out those duties. At the same time, a non-profit leader needs to have this information, and be able to share it with board members. This course will cover what board members and management staff need to know, including fiduciary duties, accountabilities, ethics, finances, and how the roles of board and staff differ. Thurs, 10/18/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Beth Forkner Moe Financial Survival Skills for Nonprofit Leaders and Grant Writers If you are a beginning grant writer, this course will provide you with the essential tools needed to write a successful grant proposal from start to finish. Thurs, 11/8/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Nancy Brown Budgeting for Nonprofit Organizations This course covers budgets and how they are used in nonprofit organizational settings. You will gain an understanding of the uses and functions of budget and the relationship between strategic budgeting and tactical budgeting. You will also learn about the organization-wide budget and different budget systems. The course will continue on to slightly more advanced budgeting topics such as capital budgets, cash flow budgets, and opportunity budgets. You will also learn how non-profit organizations are using different budgeting techniques to handle operating challenges. Thurs, 11/15/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Judie Foster-Lupkin Moving From Conflict to Collaboration Changes in the workplace are placing new emphasis on the importance of effective collaboration. Organizations are expecting employees at all levels to work together, often across functions, to make decisions that were formerly the exclusive responsibility of management. This type of collaboration can bring out new potentials for conflict, thus creating a need for employees at every level of an organization to have the skills to deal successfully with conflict. This unit gives participants the skills they need to turn conflicts into opportunities to achieve positive, productive results. Thurs, 12/13/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Gayle Plank ext

6 Elective courses Coaching: Bringing Out the Best in Others Effective coaching aims to maximize the performance of everyone associated with an organization employees, managers, customers, and suppliers. Thurs, 12/20/2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Gayle Plank Strategic Planning: Setting the Course for a Successful Future In an increasingly complex world, leaders and managers in public, private, and nonprofit organizations need to be strategic in planning and creating effective, collaborative programs and services. This workshop will explore the role and process of strategic planning with an emphasis on collaboration, cooperation, and coordination within and among organizations. Major trends affecting non-profits will be reviewed and future implications for all agencies will also be discussed. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to develop a strategic plan for their own organization. Thurs, 1/17/2013, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Instructor : Judie Foster - Lupkin Sustaining Momentum for Continuous Improvement Whenever there are changes in the way an organization operates, employees within the organization may feel as if they re see-sawing back and forth between the old ways and the new. Continuous, sustained improvement efforts take time, attention, and constant bolstering to keep employees directed and to help them realize their progress and accomplishments.
