2 featured Speakers wendy lustbader FEATURED Keynote Speaker Wendy Lustbader, MSW, is the author of several books that have earned her a national reputation in the field of aging. She is also a popular speaker at conferences throughout the United States and Canada, using storytelling to animate complex subjects. Additionally, she is a skilled psychotherapist, having worked almost twenty years with people from all walks of life at a community clinic in downtown Seattle. Currently, she is an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work in Seattle. Wendy s first book was co-authored with Nancy Hooyman, Taking Care of Aging Family Members. Her second book, Counting on Kindness, helps readers to comprehend the complex feelings which arise when we become dependent on others for help. Her latest books are What s Worth Knowing, a collection of pithy insights gathered from older people, and Life Gets Better, which explores how life improves as we get older, on every level except the physical. Too often, caregivers defer their own needs for the sake of family members needing assistance. As time passes, they may surrender more and more of themselves. Drifting between difficult emotions is also common, such as giving too much and feeling resentful, then setting limits and feeling guilty. This workshop will show how to find a balance that preserves well-being for those who give care and those who depend on them. Goals and Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Identify what is hard about giving and receiving care. 2. Distinguish between grief and depression, and describe appropriate responses to each. 3. Envision ways to set limits on care while preserving dignity for both the giver and receiver. 4. Identify strategies to mediate common family conflicts around care decisions. 5. Describe the ways adult day centers and support groups can make a difference. 6. Define individual approaches to obtaining rest and finding true renewal of one s spirit. michael berg Keynote Speaker Enjoying the View: The Importance of Levity in Day-to-Day Life Michael E. Berg s background includes 35 years as a theater professional, performing nationally, regionally and locally in popular and educational venues, from elementary schools to colleges, corporations and conferences. During that time he has also had the opportunity to be a professor of theater at many institutions, including the University of Utah and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Michael, along with his wife, CJ, has also been a performer, producer and writer for television. He is a stress management and movement/exercise specialist who has been a life enhancement and programming director at Highgate Senior Living for the past 8 years. conference sponsors

4 Are You A Caregiver? If you check one or more of the statements below, you are a caregiver. I help manage someone s medications. I provide unpaid assistance to a spouse, relative, or friend who is ill, disabled, or needs help with basic activities for daily living. I provide help with rides to the doctor and shopping. I provide meals, bill paying, housekeeping and arrange services to be provided by others. I help someone with bathing, grooming, dressing, walking or transferring to a wheelchair. I provide supportive care such as delivering meals, giving rides, calling or stopping in to check on someone. I feel concern that someone I know isn t taking care of him or herself. Whether you are just starting out in a caregiving role or continuing to care for an older person whose needs are increasing, you first need to care for yourself. This conference will offer you tips and tools for preserving your physical and emotional health, help you access community support, and help you meet other caregivers to discuss how to best care for your loved one. map to conference location Directions to Silver Reef Event Center 4876 Haxton Way Ferndale, WA FROM SOUTH OF FERNDALE, WA Travel North on I-5 to Ferndale, WA Exit #260 at Slater Rd Turn LEFT on Slater Rd to Haxton Way (5 min) Turn LEFT onto Haxton Way Event Center will be on the LEFT FROM NORTH OF FERNDALE, WA Travel South on I-5 to Ferndale, WA Exit #260 at Slater Rd Turn RIGHT on Slater Rd to Haxton Way (5 min) Turn LEFT onto Haxton Way Event Center will be on the LEFT
