In place of several years of economic cycles with stable shortterm trends, strong swings in the global economy have emerged. After the short but violent downturn in 2009 which for many was unexpectedly sudden and strong the rise in 2010 has followed. Yesterday reduced working hours; today delivery problems. Many supply chains are not geared to these fluctuations. The Supply Chain Days conference in 2011 with its topic responsiveness and flexibility, provides information on approaches and best practice examples of these challenges. Distinguished speakers show in their contributions, how they have created a flexible, fast and efficient supply chain infrastructure and processes, so as to respond to the ever faster cycles and changes. We would like to give particular mention to the lecture by Prof. Dr. Norbert Walter, chief eco no mist em of Deutsche Bank, who will in his opening lecture discuss the economic backgrounds of faster cycles in the global economy.
