2 TARGET GROUP This conference is open to anyone who is dealing with privacy and security in an online environment. Europol s Data Protection Experts Network (EDEN) members take advantage of a reduced fee. DESCRIPTION A debate between academia, NGOs, the Data Protection Community and any other interested experts on how to strike the right balance between freedom and security is necessary. EIPA and Europol are therefore jointly organising this conference on privacy in the digital age of encryption and anonymity online. The main theme of the conference will be the difficulty to balance privacy and security with a focus on the latest systems of encryption, anonymisation and pseudonymisation. The balance between privacy and security has always been central to police operations. As the main agency facing the reality of international crime in Europe, Europol is proud to have implemented a robust legal framework on Data Protection to protect the rights of every individual. Europol is always at the forefront of combating crime and defending the rights of individuals facing contemporary threats. To protect and safeguard the life of people, police officers have increasingly, in accordance to law, the power to investigate private communications. How can we deal with this in today s world where internet plays such a central role? LEARNING METHODOLOGY Through lectures given by renowned international experts on cybercrime, privacy and data protection and with interactive workshops provided by practitioners, participants will enhance their competences. OBJECTIVES With this conference, EIPA and Europol aim to: improve participants knowledge on privacy and security in today s digital world and discuss how to deal with it; reach a common definition of encryption and anonymity with the support of EC3 specialists; develop a position paper on encryption and anonymity on the internet; provide a platform for knowledge exchange and networking; create a valuable group of experts for further cooperation on this issue.
