5 Get Fit Great Falls Meeting Indian Family Health Clinic September 5, 10:30am Minutes Attendees Janelle Olberding, CCHD Teddy Nault, CCHD Donna Diaz, Special Olympics MT Nicole Bronec, CCHD Barbara Bessette, Indian Family Health Clinic Leah Noel, Indian Family Health Clinic Camille Consolvo, Great Falls College MSU Lindsay Smith, Benefis/GFPS Rebecca Richards, Children s Special Health Services Jane Weber, County Commission Erica Harp, GFPS/Action for Healthy Kids Gabriel Carbajal, MAFB HAWC Kirk Clark, MAFB HAWC Beth Munsterteiger, The Peak Gerry Jennings, MT Wilderness Association Lacey Gallagher, Benefis Spirit of Women Penny Paul, CCHD Patty Rearden, Park and Rec Becky Nelson, Foothills CCS/ River s Edge Trail Approval of August Minutes Donna submitted a correction: the Pedal for the Medal event will be held on September 7, not September 2 as stated. Camille made a motion to approve the minutes with the suggested correction. Patty seconded the motion, and with all in favor the motion passed. Jane abstained from voting as she was not present as the August meeting. Debut of Website Janelle shared the new GFGF website with the group. It was determined that generic phone numbers for Park and Rec, the Commissioners Office, and the Health Department will be listed in the Contact Us section. Also included will be a short disclaimer that GFGF is a coalition with many members from different organizations; visitors will be directed to the About Us section for more information on the different groups involved. A short discussion was held about a generic GFGF address; some members believe one already exists. Janelle will look into this. Any ideas for the website should be passed to Janelle. Abby Wambach Event Update Approximately $48,000 has been raised. Approximately $51,000 is needed to cover the appearance fee and plane ticket. The insurance process has been completed. Most registration forms have been mailed in as Eventbrite charges a fee. Currently, there are about 45 children signed up for the free camp and 35 for the competitive event. Lacey and Lindsay are not worried about filling the slots; they believe most registrations will be last minute. State-wide notification of the event did not take place as early this year as last year. The planning group has decided against bussing children to the free camp. Scheels has donated tshirts for campers and will be onsite to hand them out. Tshirts for volunteers will be distributed the mornings of the events.
6 Linda Caricaburu and her staff have the social event taken care of. Security for this event will be provided by MAFB. The Great Falls Soccer Foundation s equipment will be used during the event. Lindsay stressed that GFGF staff and volunteers will be responsible for keeping track of the equipment during the camps. A discussion was held regarding keeping up a positive relationship with the Soccer Foundation. GFGF members will make it a point to volunteer to help with their events in June. Lindsay and Lacey reported on volunteer needs: Coaches: all coaching needs are fulfilled Field marshals: Soccer Foundation parents and staff will help with this Parking and security: provided by MAFB Registration: more volunteers are needed. Anyone interested should speak with Lindsay. Volunteers should arrive by 10am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday. Park and Rec will loan GFGF four barricades for the events. Rebecca will work with Lacey to use tables from Benefis for the registration area. Indian Family Health Clinic (IFHC) staff will do first aid. Leah has not heard yet if any children are coming from the reservations. After the Saturday clinic, Abby will visit IFHC for cultural talks and demonstrations, including erecting a teepee in the Natatorium Park. Back at the IFHC, Abby will speak with Native children and also be available for interviews that will be used for PSAs. Leah is hopeful that these PSAs will help earn the money needed to begin soccer programs on the reservations. Lacey suggested having snacks available for the children at the Saturday camp. Lindsay discussed buying two USA Soccer centennial jerseys for Abby to autograph. These would be raffled off to competitive campers. A press release was distributed on September 4. It was suggested to add the sponsors to the release and resend next week. The group also discussed the possibility of running an ad in the Tribune to thank sponsors. Bike to the Ballpark Wrap-Up Jane extended thanks to all that helped with Bike to the Ballpark events. She and others that worked the event were disappointed in the turnout, estimating approximately 50 riders throughout the summer. It was also hard to sustain the event over the course of the entire summer. Jane suggested doing just one day in 2014 with, possibly, a larger discount for riders and a large advertising/marketing campaign. Some members expressed concern that riders had to ride in the dark; a Sunday afternoon game was suggested for next year s event. Gerry made a motion to only run one Bike to the Ballpark event next year in conjunction with a large advertising campaign. Camille seconded the motion, and with all in favor the motion passed. Review of Items from August Minutes Cowboy Boot Camp September 21 at MT Expo Park registration/check-in begins at 11, and the event begins at 12. Children will go through an obstacle course, constructed
7 by FFA members, that will help teach them where their food comes from. Booths are also available; participants will get a passport and can get a stamp at each booth they visit. Prizes are awarded per number of stamps. GFGF High Group at CMR GFGF members believe that Kylar Clifton is trying to work this out. Lindsay has been working with elementary schools to get wellness programs started there. Bicycle Rodeo no Bicycle Rodeo is going to be held as previously thought. Other Items/Round Robin Jane and Penny have discussed a new display board for GFGF. They agreed it would be nice to update it to look like the website. Gerry generously volunteered to pay for the updates. Lindsay suggested starting a GFGF Twitter account to enable wider dissemination of information to a younger demographic. She and Rebecca will work to set this up and coordinate with Janelle to link to the website. The Westside Orchard s Annual Meeting will be held on September 21 (members only). RSVP to sunburstlimited@gmail.com. Sandee Cardinal is taking small groups through Wal-Mart to educate about shopping for healthy food on a budget. Participants receive a $10 Wal-Mart gift card with which to practice. These take place through September. Call or visit to learn more. The Confero group, which helps bring sporting events to Great Falls, is holding their annual fundraiser on September 28. This will be on Oktoberfest-type event. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from Jane or Patty. United Way is holding a fundraiser September 5 at Scheels. A men s car show and health event will be on September 14 at Sletten Cancer Institute. Bison Ford will give $20 (up to $6000) to Sletten for every test drive. The IFHC is beginning a walking/running group. The first meeting is September 10 at 6:15pm at Gibson Park. MT Wilderness Walks are continuing through October. Rebecca recently became involved with PLUK (Parents Let s Unite for Kids), and advocacy group for families of children with special medical needs. She is to become the parent leader for the Great Falls area and has recently learned that this area is very short on resources. MAFB will be holding a Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk on October 10. Downtown vendors have been invited. Great Falls College MSU recently hired a student activities coordinator. Camille hopes the new coordinator can help get students involved in GFGF activities. Teddy and Nicole would like to share information about CCHD s Tobacco Use Prevention Program. They will give a presentation at the October meeting. Jane will speak with Dave about having the food bank director present to GFGF at the October meeting. Special Olympics MT is sponsoring Pedal for Medal on September 7. A Special Olympics basketball tournament will be coming to Great Falls November CCHD has received the velomobile and will begin training staff to use it shortly. MT Wilderness Association is sponsoring the Picture Wild Montana photo contest September See Gerry for more information. Next Meeting:
