Team Captain Guide

EVEN IF THERE S NO I IN TEAM, We re Go Glad There s You! You ve just taken the first step in making our common goals a reality. Thank you! We re so grateful to have your leadership as we begin the 2015 Walk-N-Roll. The funds you raise will support our mission efforts, including services, education, and advocacy. Long after your Walk-N-Roll is over, we hope you will feel and see the results of your efforts in your own community. As a Team Captain, you re a link to the more than 177,000 of Americans living with Spina Bifida. We need your help! If you ve never been a Team Captain before or if you do it every year this guide was made just for you. It has tips and information to help you form a team, set (and reach!) fundraising goals, and have a meaningful Walk-N-Roll experience.

THE ROLL OF TEAM CAPTAIN Team Captains make a meaningful impact by helping to raise much needed funds for the 177,00 adults, infants, and children living with Spina Bifida. The Spina Bifida Association is thrilled to welcome you as a Team Captain and is committed to helping you every step of the way. Primary Responsibilities Set a team fundraising goal of at least 1,000. You can do it! And we re here to help. Recruit at least nine friends, family members, and business associates to participate as members of your Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida team. Register online and take advantage of easy-to-use online fundraising tools. Go to and select the location of the Walk-N-Roll you are participating in. From there you can create your own team website, send s to fundraise online, track all donations, and share your story. Ask each of your team members to join your team online. Encourage team members to set and surpass a fundraising goal. Every Walk-N-Roll participant is asked to set a minimum 100 goal, and each person raising 100 individually will receive an official 2015 Walk-N-Roll t-shirt. Check out more individual fundraising prizes on the next page. Share fundraising advice, team progress, and event day information with your team members. Have fun building team spirit! Make a team shirt and banner to identify and encourage the team. Awards will be given for best team shirt, best team banner, largest team, and top fundraising team. Ask team members to submit pledges collected offline to you for submission to SBA. See the final pages of this guide for offline donation forms and instructions. Ask for help! We re here for you. Contact Mary Nethercutt or Breanne Long for help through your journey as a Walk-N-Roll Team Captain!

INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING PRIZES New Rewards for Each Team Member s Efforts! Raise 100 Receive an Official 2015 Walk-N-Roll T-shirt Raise 250 Receive an Official 2015 Walk-N-Roll T-shirt & Walk-N-Roll License Plate Cover Raise 500 Receive an Official 2015 Walk-N-Roll T-shirt & a Walk-N-Roll Tote Bag Raise 1,000 Receive an Official 2015 Walk-N-Roll T-shirt & a Walk-N-Roll VIP Sweatshirt Raise 2,500 Receive ALL of the prizes above Raise 5,000 Receive ALL of the prizes above and a *special* prize from The Spina Bifida Association

HOW TO RAISE 100 A Few Easy Ideas Personalize your own fundraising webpage with a photo and story about why you are participating. Send an with a link to your webpage to at least 50 people. Give something up a movie, manicure or dinner at an expensive restaurant and contribute what you would have spent to Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida. Host a fundraising party and ask attendees to pledge their support. Create a buddy system. Ask someone who can t join you on walk day to help collect donations. Ask your company or any company to have a Dress Down Day that employees can participate in by making a donation. Hold a garage sale and ask team members to donate items to be sold. Take your fundraising letter and Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida information everywhere you go. Ask one person every day to sponsor you. Ask your friends to contribute to your Walk-N-Roll fundraising campaign instead of purchasing a gift for your upcomming birthday, anniversary or any occasion. Ask five to ten people to save their change for you for a month. Give them decorated buckets to keep the change in. Hold a counting party at the end of the month. Approach your company. Many companies will give a flat donation and many others have matching gift programs.

SO, WHO DO YOU ASK? This is the Time to Ask Everyone You Have Supported to Now Support You. Here s a List of People to Consider: Friends Family Co-workers Favorite local restaurant owner Any favorite local shop that you frequent often Your doctor, dentist or lawyer Your teammates or gym buddies Your hairdresser or barber People at your place of worship Anyone you pay for providing a service Don t be afraid to ask! Remember that people want to support you. Give them a chance to help by asking and reminding. HOW DO YOU ASK? Connect With Your Connections! Are you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or some other type of social media network? These can be valuable tools for recruiting team members, raising funds and thanking donors! Download the Walk-N-Roll logo from the website and post it to your social media page. Update your status frequently with info about how to join your team and make donations, plus updates on reaching your goal. Tag people individually and ask them to donate, and be sure to always include a link to your personal fundraising page!

BUILD YOUR TEAM Once Registered, Get the Word Out! Once you have created your team s website, team members can now register to join your team, create their individual fundraising webpage, and then send out s inviting their own contacts to sign up and to donate. The team and individual Web pages allow team leaders and members to track their fund raising success and team recruitment efforts online. Team leaders receive notification when a new team member has registered. Team members receive notifications when donations are made on their behalf. Invite a company executive or department head to send an encouraging employee participation in Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida and listing the Team Co-Captains to contact for more information. Invite friends, family members, neighbors, and business associates to walk with you. Talk about the event and your team with everyone you meet. Promote the event and your team on social media, create a facebook event and ask all your friends to attend. Be sure to include contact information and link to your team s website. By creating a little friendly rivalry or offering incentives, Team Captains can really build momentum. Incentive ideas include: a day off from work, skipping chores for a week, raffles, casual day at work, and a month-long reserved parking space. Incentives don t have to be expensive to work!

TIMELINE 3 Months Out Register your team online at sbevents.org/walknroll Personalize your team website and invite other to join via your fundraising portal Set team fundraising and recruitment goals Recruit team members via , phone and social media Find your company s gift-matching policy Begin asking for donations 2 Months Out Hold a team kick-off party Continue recruiting team members Encourage each teammate to fundraise at least 100 Host a team fundraising event (cook off, garage sale, etc...) 1 Month Out your team weekly fundraising tips Be sure each of your team members is registered and fundraising Create and order team t-shirts to participate in the best t-shirt contest 1 Week Away Walk-N-Roll Day Meet your team at the assigned location and distribute team t-shirts Check in and Turn in additional pledges Take a team picture at the start line and photo booth Enjoy the day and celebrate the difference that is being made with your team! After the Event Collect and turn in all final donations Post photos and thanks to social media congratulating team members for their hard work Send one final asking for donations to top off your campaign - include event photos
