1 Newsletter Spring/Summer 2011 KyADAPT is an incorporated, nonprofit organization. Our mission is to establish and maintain a model independent living program for deaf and hard of hearing adults who have additional disabilities and need some assistance with daily living and work skills. All aspects of programs and services will create safe environments where participants have their functional and communication needs met and are encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible, so as to live full and enriched lives. You can contact us at: PO Box 1814 Danville, KY Web Site: info@kyadapt.org Board of Directors Susan Biggs Brian Darnell, Chair Sarita Harkness Scott Haun Janet Henson Kent Mann Debbie Martin Rachel White Rita Zirnheld Independent Living What is a Team Meeting? by Pat Bruce I was recently asked, What is a team meeting? For many families, this is a new concept. Our son, Paul, has been involved with the KyADAPT independent living program for 3 years. He lives in his own apartment, rented through the local Housing Authority and loves it! Before he moved out of our house, we knew Paul would need help. He does not have all of the skills and abilities to live safely and happily completely on how own. KyADAPT helped us find Independent Living Coaches (ILCs) who are able to work with Paul. The ILCs teach him the knowledge and skills he needs in order to continue living in his own apartment. They are all fluent in using American Sign Language. Each person in an independent living program is different. They each have their own set of strengths, weaknesses, interests and personality. There is no set curriculum or list of skills that an ILC will follow with every KyADAPT client. Therefore, it s best to have a group of interested people who come together and determine what the client needs to learn. This group of people is called a Planning Team. Paul s CONTINUED on Page 2 Requesting paper copies of the newsletter In order to save money, the KyADAPT newsletter is now being distributed to all members via . 2 KyADAPT Newsletter Spring/Summer 2011 Page 2 What is a Team Meeting? team includes his ILCs, my husband and me, Paul s Comp Care therapist and his Supported Employment specialist. Paul s team meets every year to discuss his goals. Based on their work with him, the ILCs know how much progress he has made on each goal. My husband and I know from our visits and VP conversations how we think Paul s doing. His therapist sees another part of the picture. It s very important that Paul is included in the Team meetings, too. He has his own perspective on what s working and what s not working as well as what he wants to learn. We put all of this information together to come up with the goals for the coming year. Then, we discuss which goals each ILC will work on. We also share ideas on how to work on the goals and what kind of activities will work the best. The team will get together to focus on specific situations that come up during the year. Sometimes Paul will ask for a team meeting because he wants to do something different or wants help with a particular problem. Every time a new ILC is hired, the team will meet so that everyone knows each other and knows who is working on what. Good communication between team members is needed in order to give Paul the best support possible. Since he attends the meetings, he knows that we all are on the same page and is less likely to try to play one ILC against another. Team meetings are not fancy or formal. We enjoy getting together and appreciate the good support that Paul receives from each member of the team. It s especially worth it when we stop and realize how much Paul has learned and how much progress he has made. The icing on the cake is that he deeply enjoys living on his own. Kroger Cards are GREAT!! $$ Last summer, KyADAPT started distributing Kroger Gift Cards as a means of raising funds for our independent living program. To date, we have received close to $1,000 from the Kroger Company based on how much members have used their cards. KyADAPT has around 90 cards out there but only about people have been using them on a regular basis. Can you imagine how much money we would raise if all 90 people used their cards at least once a month!?! This would provide more direct support for the clients in our Pilot Program. Sooooo, the Board has decided to offer $25.00 to the person who reloads their card with the most money each time we receive a check from Kroger. Use your card each time you purchase gasoline, groceries and/or prescriptions. The gift cards are very easy to use you just have to remember to use them when you go to the store or gas pump. If you want more information about KyADAPT Kroger cards, contact us at info@kyadapt.org or write to: PO Box 1814 Danville, KY 40423

5 KyADAPT Newsletter Spring/Summer 2011 Page 4 Pilot Program Update KyADAPT recently interviewed and contracted with our first Client Services Consultant, Rita Troxell. This position is very part-time (about 3-4 hours/week) and is paid for with combined Mental Health and KyADAPT funds. Rita comes to us with a lot of experience and knowledge. She is a teacher at KSD. She works with the special needs students in Walker Hall. Her brother lives with her he is not deaf but has several disabilities and she is his guardian. You might remember her name as she s written two good articles for the KyADAPT newsletter. Most recently she wrote an article about Self Determination. Rita will get started as soon as we get the paperwork completed. She ll be visiting with each of the clients now living in our Pilot Program. The purpose of her work is: 1. Work directly with KyADAPT clients in order to: a. evaluate the current services our clients are receiving; b. suggest new or additional services; c. assist them in acquiring new services, if needed; and d. communicate with the KyADAPT Board chairperson or representative regarding each client s program. 2. Evaluate our current Standard Operating Procedures for new clients and existing clients and consult with the KyADAPT board with suggestions for improvement. Rita s addition to the Pilot Program services will enable the Board to better understand the supports each client needs as well as the progress each is making towards increased independence. Long term, this information should give us the needed documentation to help justify increased funding from larger businesses and foundations. KyADAPT s goal is offer each client a place where they can live as independently as possible while helping them achieve their personal potential. We are currently seeking new clients, especially women. If you know of a person who might be interested in our Pilot Program, please ask them to contact us by: mail videophone KyADAPT Pat Bruce info@kyadapt.org PO Box Danville, KY People who are interested in services must fill out the Initial Application form. This can be sent via mail or . It is also available on our website: Once that form is received, someone from the Admissions committee will contact the person directly to get more information. The process is not fast because we want to ensure that the new clients have the greatest chance of succeeding in the KyADAPT Pilot Program. Dare to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another hand into the light. Norman B. Rice
