1 Quick Setup Guide Strt Here HL-2270DW Before using this mchine for the first time, red this Quick Setup Guide to setup nd instll your mchine. Plstic gs re not toys. To void dnger of suffoction, plese keep these gs wy from ies nd children nd dispose of them properly. Keep minimum gp round the mchine s shown in the illustrtion. 100mm(4 in.) 100mm (4 in.) 100mm (4 in.) 120mm (4.72 in.) We recommend tht you sve the originl pckging. The components included in the ox my differ depending on your country. If for ny reson you must ship your mchine, crefully repck the mchine in the originl pckging to void ny dmge during trnsit. The mchine should e dequtely insured with the crrier. How to repck the mchine, see Pcking nd shipping the mchine in the User s Guide. The interfce cle is not stndrd ccessory. Buy the pproprite interfce cle for the interfce you wnt to use (USB or Network). USB cle It is recommended to use USB 2.0 cle (Type A/B) tht is no more thn 2 meters (6 feet) long. Network cle Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir cle for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. ENG Version A 1

2 2 Remove the pcking mteril from the mchine e Tke out the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the AC power cord yet. Remove the pcking tpe from the outside of the mchine nd the silic gel pck from the fce-down output try. CAUTION DO NOT et the Silic Pck. Plese discrd. If ingested seek medicl ttention immeditely. Open the front cover. f Gently shke it from side to side severl times to distriute the toner evenly inside the ssemly. c Lift the elstic nd off the drum. g Put the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly ck in the mchine. d Pull the pper strip to remove the protective mteril s shown in the illustrtion. h Close the front cover of the mchine. 2

3 3 Lod pper in the pper try Pull the pper try completely out of the mchine. While pressing the green pper-guide relese lever, slide the pper guides to fit the pper size you re loding in the try. Mke sure tht the guides re firmly in the slots. d Put pper in the try nd mke sure: The pper is elow the mximum pper mrk ( ). Over filling the pper try will cuse pper jms. The side to e printed on must e fce down. The pper guides touch the sides of the pper so it will feed properly. For Legl or Folio size pper, press the relese utton in the ottom of the pper try nd then pull out the ck of the pper try. (Legl or Folio size pper re not ville in some regions.) e Put the pper try firmly ck in the mchine. Mke sure tht it is completely inserted into the mchine. For more informtion out recommended pper, See Recommended pper nd print medi in the User's Guide. c Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. 3

4 4 Print test pge IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interfce cle yet. Connect the AC power cord to the mchine nd then connect it to n AC power outlet. Turn on the mchine power switch. c d After the mchine hs finished wrming up, the Redy LED stops linking nd stys green. Press Go. The mchine will print test pge. Check tht the test pge hs printed correctly. This function will not e ville fter the first print jo you send from your computer. 4

6 USB Windows For USB Interfce Cle Users for Windows 6 Before you instll IMPORTANT If there re ny progrms running, close them. The screens my differ depending on your operting system. c For Windows Vist nd Windows 7 users, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow or Yes. Follow the on-screen instructions until this screen ppers. Mke sure tht your computer is ON nd you re logged on with Administrtor rights. Turn off the mchine nd mke sure the USB interfce cle is NOT connected to the mchine, nd then egin instlling the printer driver. If you hve lredy connected the cle, disconnect it. d Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol, nd then connect the cle to your computer. 7 Instll the printer driver Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If prompted, select your model nd lnguge. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. Click Instll Printer Driver, nd click Yes if you ccept the license greement. e Turn the mchine on, nd follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup. Finish The instlltion is now complete. 7 USB Mcintosh For USB Interfce Cle Users for Mcintosh 6 Before you instll IMPORTANT For the ltest drivers nd informtion on the Mc OS X you re using, visit For Mc OS X to users, upgrde to Mc OS X x. Mke sure your mchine is plugged in nd your Mcintosh is switched ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol, nd then connect the cle to your Mcintosh. c 7 Instll the printer driver Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Doule-click the Strt Here OSX icon. Follow the on-screen instructions. It my tke few minutes for instlltion to complete. Follow the on-screen instructions until this screen ppers. Choose your mchine from the list, nd then click OK. Windows USBMcintosh IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the printer to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the printer directly to your computer. c Mke sure the mchine power switch is on. d When this screen ppers, click Next. When the Brother Support screen ppers, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Finish The instlltion is now complete. 7

Mke sure the mchine power switch is on. If there is more thn one of the sme model connected on your network, the MAC Address (Ethernet Address) will e displyed fter the model nme. You cn find your mchine s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) nd IP Address y printing out the Printer Settings Pge. See Print the Printer Settings Pge on pge

13 Wired Network Mcintosh d When this screen ppers, click Next. When the Brother Support screen ppers, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Finish The instlltion is now complete. If you use specified IP Address for the mchine, you must set the Boot Method to Sttic y using the BRAdmin Light. 14 For Wireless Network Users For Wireless Network Interfce Users 6 Before you egin First you must configure the wireless network settings of your mchine to communicte with your network ccess point/router. After the mchine is configured to communicte with your ccess point/router, computers on your network will hve ccess to the mchine. To use the mchine from these computers, you will need to instll the printer driver. The following steps will guide you through the configurtion nd instlltion process. IMPORTANT If you re going to connect the mchine to your network, we recommend tht you contct your system dministrtor prior to instlltion. You must know your wireless network settings efore you proceed with this instlltion. If you hve previously configured the wireless settings of the mchine, you must reset the print server ck to its fctory defult settings. 1. Turn off the mchine. 2. Mke sure tht the front cover is closed nd the power cord is plugged in. 3. Hold down Go s you turn on the power switch. Keep Go pressed down until ll the LEDs light up nd then Redy LED turns off. 4. Relese Go. Mke sure tht ll the LEDs turn off. 5. Press Go six times. Mke sure tht ll the LEDs light up to indicte the print server hs een reset to its fctory defult settings. The mchine will restrt. To chieve optimum results with norml everydy document printing, plce the Brother mchine s close to the network ccess point/router s possile with miniml ostructions. Lrge ojects nd wlls etween the two devices s well s interference from other electronic devices cn ffect the dt trnsfer speed of your documents. Due to these fctors, wireless my not e the est method of connection for ll types of documents nd pplictions. If you re printing lrge files, such s multi-pge documents with mixed text nd lrge grphics, you my wnt to consider choosing wired Ethernet for fster dt trnsfer or USB for the fstest throughput speed. Although the Brother HL-2270DW cn e used in oth wired nd wireless network, only one of the connection methods cn e used t time. 15 For Wireless Network Users 7 Confirm your network environment (Infrstructure Mode) The following instructions will offer two methods for instlling your Brother mchine in wireless network environment. To setup your mchine in ny other wireless environment, you cn find instructions in the Network User s Guide. If your WLAN ccess point/router does not support Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS, write down the wireless network settings of your WLAN ccess point/router. IMPORTANT Plese do not contct Brother Customer Service for ssistnce without the wireless security informtion. We cnnot ssist you in locting your Network Security Settings. SSID (Network Nme) Network Key (Security Key/Encryption Key) For exmple: SSID (Network Nme) Network Key (Security Key/Encryption Key) HELLO If you do not know this informtion (SSID (Network Nme) nd Network Key (Security Key/Encryption Key)) you cnnot continue the wireless setup. How cn I find this informtion (SSID (Network Nme) nd Network Key (Security Key/Encryption Key)) 1) You should see the documenttion provided with your WLAN ccess point/router. 2) The initil network nme could e the mnufcturer s nme or the model nme. 3) If you do not know the security informtion, plese consult the router mnufcturer, your system dministrtor or internet provider. 16 Wireless Network Windows Configurtion using the utomtic wireless (one-push) method 8 Configure the wireless settings nd instll the printer driver Confirm your WLAN ccess point/router hs the Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS symol s shown elow. e Click Wireless Network Connection nd click Next. c d If your WLAN ccess point/router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (PIN Method) nd you wnt to configure your mchine using the PIN (Personl Identifiction Numer) Method, See Using the PIN Method of Wi-Fi Protected Setup in the Network User s Guide. Plce the Brother mchine within rnge of your Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS ccess point/router. The rnge my differ depending on your environment. Refer to the instructions provided with your ccess point/router. Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD- ROM drive. If prompted, select your model nd lnguge. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. Click Instll Printer Driver, nd click Yes if you ccept the license greement. f g For Windows Vist nd Windows 7 users, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allowe or Yes. Choose Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer, nd then click Next. Choose the option of the Firewll setting, nd then click Next. Choose Yes, my Access Point supports WPS or AOSS nd I wnt to use them nd click Next. 16

17 Wireless Network Windows h Press the wireless setup utton locted t the ck of the mchine for less thn 2 seconds s shown in the illustrtion elow. l Click Next. Use pointy oject such s llpoint pen to press the utton. Do not press the utton for 3 seconds or more, since the mchine will chnge to the PIN Method of the Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode. m Check the ox fter you confirm tht you hve completed the wireless settings, nd then click Next. i j This feture will utomticlly detect which mode (Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS ) your ccess point/router uses to configure your mchine for 2 minutes. Push the Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS utton on your WLAN ccess point/router. See the user s guide for your WLAN ccess point/router for instructions. Instll the printer driver IMPORTANT DO NOT try to cncel ny of the screens during this instlltion. k The mchine LED's will indicte the connection results. See LED indictions when using the one-push wireless setting mode on pge 33. A WLAN report will utomticlly e printed. If the connection filed, check the error on the printed report nd refer to Trouleshooting on pge 28 n Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup. Finish The instlltion is now complete. IMPORTANT You need to temporrily use USB cle or Ethernet cle during configurtion (cle not included). You must hve the wireless settings you wrote down for your network in step 7 on pge 15 efore you proceed. Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If prompted, select your model nd lnguge. e Choose the option of the Firewll setting, nd then click Next. Choose No, nd then click Next. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. Click Instll Printer Driver, nd click Yes if you ccept the license greement. f Red the Importnt Notice. Check the ox fter you confirm the SSID nd Network Key, nd then click Next. c Choose Wireless Network Connection nd then click Next. g For USB cle users, go to h. For Ethernet cle users, go to j. For Windows Vist nd Windows 7 users, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow or Yes. 18

19 Wireless Network Windows h Choose Temporrily use USB cle (Recommended) nd then click Next. k Remove the protective cp from the LAN connector. i Temporrily connect the USB cle (not included) directly to the computer nd the mchine. l Temporrily connect the Brother wireless device to your ccess point using network cle (not included) nd click Next. j Go to Step n. Choose Temporrily use n Ethernet (LAN) cle nd then click Next. m Choose the mchine you wish to configure, nd click Next. If the list is lnk, check if the ccess point nd the mchine re powered on, nd then click Refresh. Wireless Network Windows Mcintosh The defult Node nme is "BRNxxxxxxxxxxxx". 19

20 Wireless Network Windows n If the confirmtion screen ppers, check the ox nd click Next. When the following screen ppers, check Yes if you wnt to connect with the listed SSID. Click Next nd go to r. p If your network is not configured for Authentiction nd Encryption, the following screen will pper. To continue configurtion, click OK nd go to r. o The wizrd will serch for wireless networks ville from your mchine. Choose the SSID tht your checked in dvnce on pge 15), nd then click Next. q Enter the Network Key nd then enter the key gin in Confirm Network Key, then click Next. r Click Next. The settings will e sent to your mchine. If the list is lnk, check tht the ccess point hs power nd is rodcsting the SSID, nd then see if the mchine nd the ccess point re within rnge for wireless communiction. Then, click Refresh. If your ccess point is set to not rodcst the SSID you cn mnully dd it y clicking the Advnced utton. Follow the on-screen instructions for entering the Nme (SSID), nd then click Next. The settings will remin unchnged if you click Cncel. If you wnt to mnully enter the IP ddress settings of your mchine, click Chnge IP Address nd enter the necessry IP ddress settings for your network. (For USB cle users) If the wireless setup filure screen ppers, click Retry nd try strting from step o gin. s For USB cle users, go to w. For Ethernet cle users, go to t. 20

(For LAN cle users) Disconnect the network cle etween your ccess point nd the mchine, nd click Next. u << WLAN report >> ******************************************************* * Connection : OK ******************************************************* Choose the sttus s it is shown for the Connection on the wireless LAN report. Click Next. If your sttus is "Connection:OK", go to step w. If your sttus is "Connection:Filed", go to step v. Wireless setup is completed. Instll the printer driver x Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup. Finish The instlltion is now complete. v Click Finish. You cn lso confirm your IP Address y scrolling to the right. You cn find your mchine's MAC Address (Ethernet Address) nd the IP Address y printing out the Printer Settings Pge. You must hve the wireless settings you wrote down for your network in step 7 on pge 15 efore you proceed. Turn on your Mcintosh. Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Doule-click the Strt Here OSX icon. Follow the on-screen instructions. f For USB cle users, go to g. For Ethernet cle users, go to i. g Choose Temporrily use USB cle (Recommended) nd then click Next. c Click Wireless Network Connection nd click Next. h Temporrily connect the USB cle (not included) directly to the computer nd the mchine. d Choose No, nd then click Next. If the list is lnk, check tht the ccess point hs power nd is rodcsting the SSID, nd then see if the mchine nd the ccess point re within rnge for wireless communiction. Then, click Refresh. If your ccess point is set to not rodcst the SSID you cn mnully dd it y clicking the Advnced utton. Follow the on-screen instructions for entering the Nme (SSID), nd then click Next. Click Next. If your sttus is "Connection:OK", go to step u. If your sttus is "Connection:Filed", go to step t. p Click Next. The settings will e sent to your mchine. The settings will remin unchnged if you click Cncel. If you wnt to mnully enter the IP ddress settings of your mchine, click Chnge IP Address nd enter the necessry IP ddress settings for your network. (For USB cle users) If the wireless setup filure screen ppers, click Retry nd try strting from step m gin. t Click Finish. Wireless setup filed s it ws unle to ssocite with wireless network. Check the error code on the printed wireless LAN report nd refer to Trouleshooting on pge 28. Then try strting from step gin. 26

27 Wireless Network Mcintosh u (For USB cle users) Disconnect the USB cle etween the computer nd the mchine. v Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup. When the Brother Support screen ppers, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Finish The instlltion is now complete. (For LAN cle users) Disconnect the network cle etween your ccess point nd the mchine, nd click Next. If you use specified IP Address for the mchine, you must set the Boot Method to Sttic y using the BRAdmin Light. For more informtion, See Chnging your mchine s network settings in the Network User s Guide. Wireless setup is completed. Instll the printer driver IMPORTANT DO NOT try to cncel ny of the screens during this instlltion. If there is more thn one of the sme model connected on your network, the MAC Address (Ethernet Address) will e displyed fter the model nme. You cn lso confirm your IP Address y scrolling to the right. You cn find your mchine s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) nd the IP Address y printing out the Printer Settings Pge. 28 For Wireless Network Users Trouleshooting IMPORTANT Plese do not contct Brother Customer Service for ssistnce without the wireless security informtion. We cnnot ssist you in locting your network security settings. How cn I find the wireless settings SSID nd Network Key 1) You should see the documenttion provided with your WLAN ccess point/router. 2) The initil network nme could e the mnufcturer s nme or the model nme. 3) If you do not know the security informtion, plese consult the router mnufcturer, your system dministrtor or internet provider. * The Network Key my lso e descried s the Pssword, Security Key or Encryption Key. WLAN report Press Go five times within four seconds. The mchine prints the WLAN report. If the WLAN report tht printed shows tht the connection filed, check the error code on the printed report nd refer to the following instructions. Error code TS-01 Recommended Solutions The wireless setting is not ctivted, turn the wireless setting to ON. - If LAN cle is connected to your mchine, disconnect it nd turn the wireless setting of your mchine to ON. Hold down Go for 10 seconds. Relese Go when the mchine prints Network Configurtion pge tht indictes the current network settings. The WLAN ccess point/router cnnot e detected. 1. Check the following 4 points. TS-02 - Mke sure tht the WLAN ccess point/router is powered on. - Move your mchine to n ostruction-free re, or closer to the WLAN ccess point/router. - Temporrily plce your mchine within out one meter (3.3 feet) from the WLAN ccess point when you re configuring the wireless settings. - If your WLAN ccess point/router is using MAC ddress filtering, confirm the MAC ddress of the Brother mchine is llowed in the filter. 2. If you mnully entered the SSID nd security informtion (SSID/uthentiction method/encryption method/network Key) the informtion my e incorrect. Reconfirm the SSID nd security informtion nd reenter the correct informtion s necessry. See How cn I find the wireless settings SSID nd Network Key on pge 28 to confirm. 28

For infrstructure mode, chnge the uthentiction nd encryption methods of the WLAN ccess point/router. Your mchine supports the following uthentiction methods WPA, WPA2, OPEN nd Shred key. WPA supports TKIP or AES encryption methods. WPA2 supports AES for the encryption method. OPEN nd Shred key correspond to WEP encryption. If your prolem is not solved the SSID or network settings you entered my e incorrect. Reconfirm the wireless network settings. TS-05 TS-06 The security informtion (SSID/Network Key) is incorrect. Reconfirm the SSID nd security informtion (Network Key). If your router uses WEP encryption, enter the key used s the first WEP key. Your Brother mchine supports the use of the first WEP key only. See How cn I find the wireless settings SSID nd Network Key on pge 28 to confirm. The wireless security informtion (Authentiction method/encryption method/network Key) is incorrect. Two or more WLAN ccess points tht hve WPS or AOSS enled re detected. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or greter) or Firefox 3.0 (or greter) for Windows nd Sfri 3.0 (or greter) for Mcintosh. Plese lso mke sure tht JvScript nd Cookies re lwys enled in whichever rowser you use. To use we rowser, you will need to know the IP Address of the print server. The IP Address of the print server is listed on the Print Setting Pge. Open your rowser. Type into your rowser (Where mchine_ip_ddress is the IP ddress or the print server nme). For exmple See We Bsed Mngement in the Network User s Guide. Reset the network settings to the fctory defult You cn reset the print server ck to its defult fctory settings (resetting ll informtion such s the pssword nd IP ddress informtion). c d e Turn off the mchine. Mke sure tht the front cover is closed nd the power cord is plugged in. Hold down Go s you turn on the power switch. Keep Go pressed down until ll the LEDs light up nd then Redy LED turns off. Relese Go. Mke sure tht ll the LEDs turn off. Press Go six times. Mke sure tht ll the LEDs light up to indicte the print server hs een reset to its fctory defult settings. The mchine will restrt. Print the Printer Settings Pge The Printer Settings Pge lists ll the current printer settings, including network settings. c Mke sure tht the front cover is closed nd the power cord is plugged in. Turn on the mchine nd wit until the mchine is in the Redy stte. Press Go three times within 2 seconds. The mchine will print the current printer settings pge. If the IP ddress on the Printer Settings Pge shows , wit for one minute nd try gin. 31
