Remove the green protetive pking y lifting the front of the mhine nd then pulling down on the pking prt. Remove the plsti g ontining the ink rtridges from on top of the pper try. Mke sure you hve ll omponents. The omponents inluded in the ox my differ depending on your ountry. Sve ll pking mterils nd the ox in se for ny reson you must ship your mhine. You need to purhse the orret interfe le for the interfe you wnt to use (for USB or network onnetion). USB le Plese mke sure you use USB 2.0 le (Type A/B) tht is no more thn 6 feet (2 meters) long. Network le Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir le for 0BASE-T or 00BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. USA/CAN Version 0

2 2 Lod plin Letter/A4 pper Pull the pper try ompletely out of the mhine. d e Fn the stk of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. Gently put the pper into the pper try print side down nd top edge first. Chek tht the pper is flt in the try. Importnt Do not push the pper in too fr. Open the pper try over. When you use Legl size pper, press nd hold the universl guide relese utton s you slide out the front of the pper try. With oth hnds, gently press nd slide the pper side guides nd then the pper length guide to fit the pper size. Mke sure tht the tringulr mrks on the pper side guides nd pper length guide line up with the mrk for the pper size you re using. 3 f Gently djust the pper side guides to the pper with oth hnds. Mke sure tht the pper side guides touh the edges of the pper

3 g Close the pper try over. h Slowly push the pper try ompletely into the mhine. i While holding the pper try in ple, pull out the pper support until it liks, nd then unfold the pper support flp. 2 3

4 3 Connet the power ord nd telephone line Importnt DO NOT onnet the USB le yet (if you re using USB le). Connet the power ord. If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone, onnet it s shown elow. Before you onnet the externl telephone, remove the protetive p from the EXT. jk on the mhine. 2 Connet the telephone line ord. Connet one end of the telephone line ord to the jk on the mhine mrked LINE nd the other end to modulr wll jk. Extension telephone 2 Externl telephone If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone nswering mhine, onnet it s shown elow. Before you onnet the externl telephone nswering mhine, remove the protetive p from the EXT. jk on the mhine. Importnt The telephone line ord MUST e onneted to the jk on the mhine mrked LINE. Set the reeive mode to Externl TAD if you hve n externl nswering mhine. See Choose the orret Reeive Mode on pge 8. For dditionl detils, see Conneting n externl TAD (telephone nswering devie) in Chpter 7 of the User s Guide. 4

5 4 Instll the ink rtridges e Turn the green kno on the protetive yellow p lokwise until it liks to relese the vuum sel, then remove the p. WARNING If ink gets in your eyes, wsh them out with wter t one, nd if irrittion ours onsult dotor. Mke sure tht the power is turned on. The LCD shows: No Crtridge Instll Ink Blk Open the ink rtridge over. Remove the green protetive prt. f Tke re to mth the olor of the lever with the rtridge olor, s shown in the digrm elow. 2 d Do not throw wy the green protetive prt. You will need it if you trnsport the mhine. Unpk the ink rtridge. g Instll eh ink rtridge in the diretion of the rrow on the lel. 5

6 h Gently push the ink rtridge until it liks. After ll the ink rtridges re instlled lose the ink rtridge over. The mhine will prepre the ink tue system for printing. This proess will tke pproximtely four minutes. Do not turn off the mhine. Importnt DO NOT tke out ink rtridges if you do not need to reple them. If you do so, it my redue the ink quntity nd the mhine will not know the quntity of ink left in the rtridge. DO NOT shke the ink rtridges. If ink stins your skin or lothing, wsh with sop or detergent t one. DO NOT repetedly insert nd remove the rtridges. If you do so, ink my seep out of the rtridge. If you mix the olors y instlling n ink rtridge in the wrong position, len the print hed severl times fter orreting the rtridge instlltion. (See Clening the print hed in Appendix B of the User s Guide.) One you open n ink rtridge, instll it in the mhine nd use it up within six months of instlltion. Use unopened ink rtridges y the expirtion dte written on the rtridge pkge. DO NOT dismntle or tmper with the ink rtridge, this n use the ink to lek out of the rtridge. Brother strongly reommends tht you do not refill the ink rtridges provided with your mhine. We lso strongly reommend tht you ontinue to use only Genuine Brother Brnd replement ink rtridges. Using or ttempting to use potentilly inomptile inks nd/or rtridges in your mhine my use dmge to the mhine itself nd/or it my result in unstisftory print qulity. Our wrrnty overge does not pply to ny prolem tht ws used y the use of unuthorized third prty ink nd/or rtridges. To protet your investment nd gurntee your print qulity plese ontinue to reple onsumed ink rtridges with only Genuine Brother Brnded Supplies. 6

7 5 Chek the print qulity d The LCD sks you if the print qulity is OK for lk nd olor. Press (Yes) or 2 (No) on the dil pd. Blk OK?. When the preprtion proess hs finished, the LCD shows this messge Yes No Press Press Set Pper nd Press Strt After pressing (Yes) or 2 (No) for oth lk nd olor, the LCD shows: Strt Clening? Press Color Strt. Chek the qulity of the four olor loks on the sheet. (lk/yellow/yn/mgent) e f Yes No Press Press Press (Yes), the mhine will then strt lening the olors. After lening is finished, press Color Strt. The mhine strts printing the Print Qulity Chek Sheet gin. Go k to. If ll lines re ler nd visile, press (Yes) on the dil pd to finish the qulity hek. 8 7 Choose the orret Reeive Mode The orret Reeive Mode is determined y the externl devies nd telephone susrier servies (Voie Mil, Distintive Ring, et.) you hve (or will e using) on the sme line s the Brother mhine. Will you e using Distintive Ring numer for reeiving fxes? Brother uses the term "Distintive Ring" ut telephone ompnies my hve other nmes for this servie suh s Custom Ringing, RingMster, Personlized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Cll, nd Smrt Ring. See Distintive Ring in Chpter 7 of the User's Guide for instrution on setting up your mhine using this feture. Will you e using Voiemil on the sme telephone line s your Brother mhine? If you hve Voie Mil on the sme telephone line s your Brother mhine, there is strong possiility tht Voie Mil nd the Brother mhine will onflit with eh other when reeiving inoming lls. See Voie Mil in Chpter 7 of the User's Guide for instrutions on setting up your mhine using this servie. Will you e using Telephone Answering Devie on the sme telephone line s your Brother mhine? Your externl telephone nswering devie (TAD) will utomtilly nswer every ll. Voie messges re stored on the externl TAD nd fx messges re printed. Choose Externl TAD s your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Will you e using your Brother mhine on dedited fx line? Your mhine utomtilly nswers every ll s fx. Choose Fx Only s your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Will you e using your Brother mhine on the sme line s your telephone? Do you wnt to reeive voie lls nd fxes utomtilly? The Fx/Tel reeive mode is used when shring the Brother mhine nd your telephone on the sme line. Choose Fx/Tel s your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Importnt : You nnot reeive voie messges on either Voie Mil or n nswering mhine when hoosing the Fx/Tel mode. Do you expet to reeive very few fxes? Choose Mnul s your reeive mode. Enter your fx numer (up to 20 digits) on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Enter your nme (up to 20 hrters) using the dil pd, nd then press OK. See the following hrt for entering your nme. If you need to enter hrter tht is on the sme key s the lst hrter, press to move the ursor to the right. If you entered letter inorretly nd wnt to hnge it, press d or to move the ursor to the inorret hrter, press Cler/Bk. f Press Stop/Exit. 12 3 Send in the Produt Registrtion nd Test Sheet (USA only) You n lso register your produt online using the On-Line Registrtion link from the instlltion CD-ROM or visit e Press Blk Strt. You will reeive onfirmtion fx of your Produt Registrtion. Fill out the Produt Registrtion nd Test Sheet. Put the sheet fe down in the ADF (Automti Doument Feeder) or fe down on the snner glss. Mke sure (Fx) is illuminted in Blue. d Enter the toll-free fx numer:

When the On-Line Registrtion sreen is displyed, mke your seletion nd follow the on-sreen instrutions. One you hve ompleted the registrtion proess, lose your we rowser to return to this window. USB Windows Mintosh h Choose XXX-XXXX (where XXX-XXXX is your model nme), nd then lik Add. Plese wit, it will tke few seonds for the softwre to instll. After the instlltion, lik Restrt to finish instlling the softwre. d The Brother softwre will serh for the Brother devie. During this time the following sreen will pper. i Clik Print Center, then Quit Print Center. The instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. Go to step 8 on pge 20. 9

If oth USB nd LAN les re eing used, guide oth les through the trenh with one on top of the other. Importnt Mke sure tht the le does not restrit the over from losing, or n error my our. d Lift the snner over to relese the lok. Gently push the snner over support down nd lose the snner over. 2 3 Importnt If you hve previously set up your mhine for wireless network nd then wnt to set it up on wired network, you should hek tht the mhine s Network I/F is set to Wired LAN. The wireless network interfe will eome intive with this setting. On your mhine, press Menu. Press or to hoose Network nd press OK. Press or to hoose Network I/F nd press OK. Press or to hoose Wired LAN nd press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 22

23 Wired Network Windows 8 Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme sreen ppers, hoose your mhine. If the lnguge sreen ppers, hoose your lnguge. If this sreen ppers, lik OK nd restrt your omputer. If the instlltion does not ontinue utomtilly, open the min menu gin y ejeting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-lik the strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd ontinue from to instll MFL- Pro Suite. 24 Wired Network Windows f Choose Wired Network Connetion, nd then lik Next. If the mhine is onfigured for your network, hoose the mhine from the list, nd then lik Next. This window will not pper if there is only one mhine onneted on the network, it will e hosen utomtilly. g For Windows XP SP2/Windows Vist users, when this sreen ppers, hoose Chnge the Firewll port settings to enle network onnetion nd ontinue with the instlltion. (Reommended) nd lik Next. If your mhine shows APIPA in the IP Address field, lik Configure IP Address nd enter n IP ddress for your mhine tht is suitle for your network. If the mhine is not yet onfigured for use on your network, the following sreen ppers. If you re using firewll other thn Windows Firewll or Windows Firewll is off, this sreen my pper. See the instrutions provided with your firewll softwre for informtion on how to dd the following network ports. For network snning, dd UDP port For network PC-Fx reeiving, dd UDP port If you still hve troule with your network onnetion, dd UDP port 37. h Clik OK. The Configure IP Address window will pper. Enter n IP ddress for your mhine tht is suitle for your network y following the on-sreen instrutions. The instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomtilly strt. 25 Wired Network Windows For Windows Vist, when this sreen ppers, lik the hek ox nd lik Instll to omplete the instlltion orretly. 9 Finish nd restrt Clik Finish to restrt your omputer. After restrting the omputer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. i When the On-Line Registrtion sreen is displyed, mke your seletion nd follow the on-sreen instrutions. One you hve ompleted the registrtion proess, lose your we rowser to return to this window. Then lik Next. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostis loted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother/ MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model nme). 20 Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl omputers (If needed) If you wnt to use your mhine with multiple omputers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on eh omputer. Go to step 8 on pge 23. Also see step 5- on pge 2 efore you instll. The MFL-Pro Suite Softwre Liense permits instlltion on up to 2 network omputers. if you wnt to instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl omputers, you n purhse dditionl NL-5 (five user) liense greements from your uthorized Brother deler or ontt Brother ustomer servie.
