1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Pre-registration Pharmacist Band: 5 Hours: Responsible to: Accountable to: Professionally Accountable to: 37.5 hours per week Principal Pharmacist: Clinical Governance & Risk Management Chief Pharmacist Chief Pharmacist Responsible for: Base: Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Required: Job Summary: Key Result Areas: St Peter s Hospital Standard disclosure A one year fixed term contract to meet the requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council to register as a pharmacist by: a) Undertaking dispensing and supply of medicines; technical and aseptic preparation of medicines; provision of medicines advice and ward based pharmacy services as part of a structured rotational training programme. b) Attending study days/sessions, both locally and as arranged by Regional Education & Training. c) Demonstrating competence in the Performance Standards identified in the GPhC Training Manual. d) Undertaking the pre-registration pharmacist s examination. To demonstrate and provide adequate evidence of competence in core areas of practical and professional practice 1. To be eligible for entry into the pre-registration exam
2 Overview of Responsibilities : General To assist in the operation of pharmaceutical services and delivery of patient care. To participate in the competency- based training programme as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council [GPhC]. To be responsible for self-directed learning in order to support the collection of a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence against Performance Standards (as set by GPhC ). To demonstrate achievement of specific objectives and practice activities within the main areas of practice. To attend a series of regional study days to complement the practical experience. To record reflective practice and self-development to show learning has taken place. To participate in the provision of a wide variety of core and clinical pharmacy services as part of a structured programme with an emphasis on personal development. To develop and maintain knowledge and skills necessary to deliver these activities /services. To participate in relevant education, post graduate qualification, in house training, competence assessment and CPD to develop skills to ensure the effective delivery of these services. To participate in performance appraisal. To participate in statutory and mandatory training To participate in quarterly appraisals with the preregistration pharmacist tutor and/or manager. To prepare for and sit the GPhC pre-registration examination. Dispensing Services Labelling, assembly and dispensing of pharmaceuticals. Become proficient in the use of the Ascrbe Pharmacy Computer System and other electronic databases and prescribing systems, and comply with the Data Protection Act with respect to the entry of patient details from prescriptions. Participates in the preparation and/or dispensing of clinical trial material in line with clinical trial protocols. Participate in the preparation of extemporaneous drugs (where applicable) To undertake and complete the ACPT scheme, if required. Distribution Services Assembly of stock orders from pharmacy ward services and stores Conduct weekly ward top up Clinical Services Participate in the provision of medicines information and advice to clinical and other professional staff. Ward visits with pharmacists during the rotation to develop knowledge and skills. At end of preregistration year the preregistration pharmacist must be competent to perform ward pharmacist functions with support and minimum supervision. Ward pharmacist functions include: Assessing pharmaceutical care needs Initiating and carrying out care plans Review for need of drug therapies, selection of appropriate drug therapies / doses / modification of existing therapies Advice to doctors / other health care staff Discharge planning Counselling patients Thereby ensuring that patients receive safe and appropriate medication. 2
3 To participate in the programme to ensure a consistency of service to medicine, surgery, care of the elderly, paediatrics and medicines information To participate in the regional Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) To provide a clinical service to a ward in the final quarter of the pre-registration year To ensure that that drugs utilised within area of rotation reflect the recommendations, the policies and formulary. Medicines Information Services Gain experience in medicines information including receipt, and timely and accurate response to enquiries Aseptic Services: Participate in the provision of aseptic services (including cytotoxic preparation), where appropriate, under the supervision of senior staff. This will include the preparation of sterile products using aseptic technique in isolators in designated aseptic units to GMP standards Other Services / Projects To undertake a 2 week (minimum) cross sector training placement in community pharmacy under the guidance of a registered Pre-registration Tutor To undertake and complete a practice-based audit and present this to a regional team towards the end of the pre-registration year To work with Pharmacy and other Healthcare staff in identifying and reducing risk from medication errors Participate in research and/or audit programmes as required, as part of the continual quality standards development of the pharmacy departments. Other Duties To be aware of and work within: departmental procedures and polices; accepted standards if practice; and relevant legislation (e.g. Health and Safety, Medicines Act) To at all time practice in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the GPhC To be able to follow procedures, current legislation, regulations governing the Health and Safety at work act and COSHH. To participate in late night, weekend and bank holiday rosters To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required for the effective running of the department, appropriate to experience. To take part in regular performance appraisal. To undertake any training required in order to maintain competency including mandatory training, i.e. Fire, Manual Handling. To contribute to and work within a safe working environment. 3

Monitoring and Maintaining Good Health and Safety 5
6 The safety of patients, staff and visitors is paramount.
