1 FAQs How do I become a host? How do I get approved to host a Facebook Developer Garage? Read through these FAQs and platformevents@fb.com with your name, , URL of your Facebook integration, proposed date range, proposed Garage location, and a few other details. We will evaluate your request within 30 business days. How much time do I have to host my Facebook Developer Garage after I get approved? Once approved, you have 60 days to host your Facebook Developer Garage. If you do not host your Facebook Developer Garage during this time frame, you must reapply. Can I plan a Facebook Developer Garage without approval? No. To be part of the Facebook Developer Garage program, your Facebook Developer Garage must be approved by the Developer Garage team. There are no exceptions. Can I host a Facebook Developer Garage without a contract or alter the contract? No. What happens if I host a Facebook Developer Garage without a contract? In order to maintain the consistency of the program, as of August 2010, all Facebook Developer Garages are required to have a contract in place in order to use the program branding or any other program resources. If you do not have a contract in place, this may result in legal action. Additionally, the Facebook team will not support any of your future Facebook Developer Garages. My request to host a Garage was declined; can I host one in the future? Yes. You can reapply by ing platformevents@fb.com
2 Reasons for declining requests may include: Limited resources available to support your Garage. Existing Garage host in your region. Not enough knowledge of Facebook Platform. If your request is declined, brush up on all Developer Garage materials and read the recent updates on the Developer Blog, then please apply again. Planning Your Garage Once I'm accepted into the Facebook Developer Garage program, how do I start planning my event? Choose a date and time Estimate the number of attendees Book a venue and securing equipment Create a Facebook event to publicize your Garage How do I choose a venue? To choose a venue, consider: Event size Adequate A/V components Internet connection Seating Mingling/refreshments space For hackathons, additionally consider: Fast internet connection Enough ports to support your attendee size White boards for collaborating
3 How many people should I expect to attend my Garage? Attendance varies according to region, established developer group, and density. For large metropolitan cities (like London), expect developers. For newer markets (like Columbus, Ohio), expect developers. How should I choose a date for my Facebook Developer Garage? When choosing a date, consider: Your 60 day time limit Other developer events in your local community. Planning your event to be a precursor or closer to large industry events can be effective, but check with the event organizers first before confirming your date. What are the best days or times to host a Facebook Developer Garage? We recommend a weekday after work. For hackathons, weekend events tend to be better attended. How long should my event be? We recommend: Total: 3-5 hours 1-2 hours of content Additional time for networking and collaborating Where can I find my event? Once your second contact form is accepted, you will find your Facebook Developer Garage event listed on the Facebook Developer Garage Program Page and the Platform Page under the "Events" tab. Point potential attendees here to learn more about your event or find out about upcoming events.
4 Should I live stream my event? To maximize your efforts and provide more resources to the developer community, we encourage you to live stream your event. Post your live stream link and message your guests beforehand so those who can't attend can still tune in. Judging from my Facebook Event, how many people should I plan for? Since Facebook Developer Garages are free of charge, you should expect 50% attrition in your attendance numbers. For example, if your Facebook event shows 600 attendees who have RSVP'd, you will likely see around 300 total attendees. What should I do the day before an event? The day before your event, please: 1. Message your guests about any final logistics. 2. Prepare to take photos and/or video of your event. 3. Review your sponsorship guidelines. What should I do with the Facebook Developer Garage video? As part of your sponsorship agreement, remember to play the Facebook Developer Garage video at the beginning of your Developer Garage. The video was sent to you on a thumb drive in your Garage- in- a- Box kit. This will help set the tone of your Garage and educate developers on the history and the spirit behind the Facebook Developer Garage program. What should I do during my event? Now that the organizing is complete, today is the day all your hard work pays off. Reminder. Be sure to send a reminder message the day of the event with any special instructions. Registration. Be sure to set up early for registration if you expect a large number of attendees. You may want to dedicate a space for badges / lanyards and any other swag you plan to hand out. Speakers. Make sure your speakers arrive one to two hours before the event
5 starts to test their presentations, get familiar with the space, and work out any other kinks before the attendees arrive. Q&A. Be sure to leave time after each presentation for Q&A minutes should be sufficient. Have Fun. You've organized and executed a successful event! Sit back, relax, and enjoy your Garage! How often should I plan Facebook Developer Garages in my area? We encourage regular meet- ups of Facebook Developers in your area. In large metropolitan areas, host a Garage once every three months. In smaller markets, host a Garage once every six months. Hosting Garages more frequently can dilute the quality of the event. How do I build my local Garage community? Create a Facebook Developer Garage Group. Use this group to message local developers on upcoming Facebook- related events. Use these communication channels only for content related to Facebook. Engage in discussions on the Facebook Developer Garage Page. Help out other Facebook Developer Garage hosts to share tips and success factors. Agenda and Content How do I choose an event theme and find out the latest on Facebook Platform? Facebook Developer Garages are more successful if you choose a specific theme; for example, Social Gaming, How to Monetize your Apps, Facebook Platform Best Practices, and the like. We recommend you read our Facebook Developer Blog to determine which topics are the most interesting and timely to learn about the latest product launches and program updates.
6 How do I choose an agenda? First, please choose an event theme. Once you've chosen a theme, create an agenda around that theme, leveraging local speakers. Below is a sample agenda (Event: ~4 hours): Welcome Update on Facebook technologies The Facebook Graph API Facebook Social Plugins Demo of local app or social implementation Demo #2 of local app or social implementation Drinks to meet developers like you Below is a sample hackathon agenda (Event: ~8-24 hours): Pre- work: All attendees submit project ideas on wiki in order to participate. Agenda for day of the event: Welcome Overview of technology we're hacking on (like the Graph API or the Real- time API) Attendees present ideas and create teams 8-24 hours hackathon Judging if desired Can I cover non- Facebook related topics? No. Since Facebook is the sponsor of this program, please cover topics related to building on Facebook Platform. Although you should feel free to answer questions about other technologies if they come up, your agenda should focus on Facebook products and technologies. Where do I submit my tentative agenda for approval? Submit your tentative agenda on the space provided on your second contact form.
7 Will Facebook send a speaker? As much as we would like to attend every Facebook Developer Garage, due to busy schedules we often cannot. Do not plan for a Facebook speaker to attend your event. If we are able to attend, we will reach out to you directly to discuss availability. Should I expect a speaker from the program sponsor? This year, Facebook and Intel have partnered together to provide more resources to developers. As part of this agreement, Intel may send a speaker to your event. Please reserve a 15 minute slot for a speaker from Intel. If they intend to speak at your event, they will contact you directly no later than one week before your event. Should I invite other community speakers? Yes. Community speakers can have great impact on the success of your Garage since they understand your local community the best and have more relevant tips. Identify additional community speakers (app developers, companies with Facebook social integrations, luminaries, service providers) and invite them to share their technical, business, or advertising knowledge about the Facebook application space by participating in your local developer community. Publicity and Marketing Should I set up a Facebook event? Yes, in order to drive interest to your event and be displayed on the Facebook Developer Garage Page, you must create a Facebook event. Your event title should be "Facebook Developer Garage [LOCATION]." Should I create a media release?
8 If you want to inform more developers in your local community, reaching out to a local publication can help. To create a media release, please read our media release guidelines and use this template. Please plan ahead since all media releases must be approved by PlatformPR@fb.com before they go to print. What other methods should I use to publicize my event? If you want to do additional marketing for your event, we recommend a few additional things you can do to get the word out about your Garage event. Online. There are more options to promote your event online. Ask bloggers to write short posts about the Garage, linking to the Facebook event. Post the event on sites like Twitter, Stumble Upon, Google Groups, and Meetup.com. Run Facebook ads targeted to developers in your area. Offline: If you want to publicize your event offline, you can use traditional marketing to reach new developers throughout the world. Print flyers/posters to post at nearby universities with notable tech programs. Enlist the help of large technology companies in the area. Reach out to BarCamps or other similar technology gatherings. Branding Why should I consider branding my event? Branding is a big part of hosting your event and being part of the Facebook Developer Garage community. All Developer Garages share the same logo and design assets. How do I get a Facebook Developer Garage logo? For program participants, Facebook provides you with a Facebook Developer Garage logo for use. Facebook no longer supports unique regional logos. However, if you already have one for your area, you can continue to use it.
9 Can I change the Facebook Developer Garage logo provided? No. To maintain consistency of the program, you are required to use the Facebook Developer Garage logo provided without any modifications. What's included in my Garage- in- a- Box kit? About two weeks before your Garage you will receive your Garage- in- a- Box kit. This kit contains: Facebook Developer Garage badges Facebook Developer Garage lanyards Facebook Developer Garage stickers 14 Facebook Developer Garage posters (for your event venue and to help publicize your event) A USB thumb drive with the Facebook Developer Garage program video to play at the beginning of your Garage Another copy of the T- shirt mechanic to produce T- shirts (if you haven't downloaded it already) A poster mechanic if you want to produce additional posters Intel giveaways for your event Can I produce more posters that aren't included in the Garage- in- a- Box kit? If needed, please produce more posters to fit your venue using the template provided. Do you have other branded items for purchase? As part of the program, we provide special access to our Facebook Developer Garage store. The URL and password are sent to you once you are accepted. Here you can purchase additional branded items for your attendees or hosts who have put time and effort into organizing the event.
10 Funding Does Facebook provide sponsorship for the Facebook Developer Garage Program? After approval, Facebook provides up to US$9,000 for Garage hosts to use to fund their Facebook Developer Garage. These funds may only be used for event- related expenses including: Venue A/V Catering Facebook Developer Garage swag Signage Publicity including ads Videotaping/Live streaming Other event- related expenses Items that are NOT reimbursable: Prizes Travel expenses Speaker fees Other expenses not related to your event Should I charge for my Facebook Developer Garage? Facebook Developer Garages are not for profit and ideally you should not charge for your event. Use your sponsorship funds to cover all expenses if possible. In cases where your sponsorship does not cover your entire event, we recommend you charge no more than US$20 per attendee. Can I take on additional sponsors? No. Through this program, you cannot take on additional sponsors. What documents do I need to return to receive my Facebook Developer
11 Garage grant? Before the event, return: 1. Your signed contract. 2. Your W- 8 or W- 9 form. 3. Your banking details. To be fully reimbursed after the event, include: 1. Your invoice. 2. All your receipts including purchases made with your pre- event wire. I submitted my contract, but I haven't received my initial wire transfer. What do I do? If your contract has been received and you either 1) have waited longer than 30 business days, or 2) have less than two weeks before your event will occur, please contact ap@fb.com. Specify the information below and our finance team will be able to assist you: Your Garage name Date you submitted your contract, W- 8/W- 9 form, and banking details Date of your event How do I learn more about reimbursement guidelines, timeline, and documents? Learn more about reimbursement here. Who is sponsoring the Garage program and how do I find out about being a program sponsor? We're excited to partner with Intel this. If you're interested in being a program sponsor in the future, please platformevents@fb.com. Please note, we do not accept sponsorships on a one- off basis. All sponsorships go
12 towards sponsoring the entire program. Wrapping Up Your Event and Getting Reimbursed What should I do after my Facebook Developer Garage has finished? The day after your Facebook Developer Garage, we will send you an with the steps needed to wrap up your event. First, you need to submit: The estimated number of attendees. A recap of your Facebook Developer Garage that we can use for blog posts like this one. Links to the media you shared at your Facebook Developer Garage. Then: Post all links for your media on your Facebook event Wall to share with attendees and other developers. Submit your Facebook Developer Garage reimbursement paperwork within 30 days of your event. Think about the opportunity to plan your next Facebook Developer Garage! How do I get reimbursed? To get reimbursed, follow the steps at developers.facebook.com/devgarage/reimbursement. How long do I have to obtain my reimbursement? You have up to 30 days after your Facebook Developer Garage to submit your reimbursement request. Reimbursement may take up to another 30 days to receive.
