2 Welcome Order of Events This year KU reaches a significant milestone as we celebrate 120 years of providing high quality early childhood education and care for children and families. As we reflect on our proud history and consider our journey, it is important that we acknowledge that we stand on the shoulders of our founders and the many teachers and educators, leaders, advocates and change makers who have come before us. Collectively, they have crafted a rich heritage that continues to shape quality pedagogy, innovative thinking and leadership in early childhood education today. The KU Conference in 2015 invites contemporary early childhood professionals to reflect upon this proud history and the promise of rich early childhood pedagogies in the future. We are delighted to introduce international speaker Karyn Callaghan and again welcome the insights and provocations of renowned Australian early childhood academics, professionals and curriculum specialists. 3 Session One Karyn Callaghan Karyn Callaghan To take a step forward, you have to lose your balance. These words, spoken by a 3 year old boy, can serve to remind us that disequilibrium serves how we might co-construct rich contexts for learning in early childhood environment? How do we listen and give visibility to children s many languages? What if we focus on how children make sense of their worlds and how as educators we can learn to listen and develop the disposition to document and support children s many ways of making their thinking visible. The role of the educator is rich, broad and complex. Educators have the potential to alter the quality of thinking, feeling and imagining through questions and experiences, living and learning together with children and documenting these processes to help sustain rich and contextual pedagogies. How can documentation serve us in this quest? Let s see if we can lose our balance together. Karyn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Child Studies from Brock University and a Master of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/ University of Toronto. Karyn was engaged in writing the curriculum for the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies program at Charles Sturt University. Karyn has spoken at national and international conferences and has articles published in international journals. Session Two Sandra Cheeseman Listening to infants and toddlers seeking insights into their thinking and theorising. This session explores the notion of listening as a way to better understand how infants and toddlers might express their interests and intents in learning. Seeking greater insight into the thinking and theorising of infant and toddlers prompts us to ask if they might be bored with our curriculum offereings? Sandra Cheeseman is a lecturer in early childhood policy, leadership and professional experience. Sandra is currently undertaking doctoral studies, investigating the experience of infants in childcare settings that now use the Early Years Learning Framework. Session Three Deliberative Forum Karyn Callaghan and Sandra Cheeseman This session will be facilitated by both Karyn and Sandra, who will invite participants to reflect upon the presentation content and respond to specific questions. These questions will provoke the robust discussion, critical thinking and analysis of contemporary practices and innovations, current dilemmas and tensions.
