Combining practical teaching skills with contemporary approaches and theories, UWS aims to produce graduates with highly-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the capacity to engage in reflective practice. The School of Education offers three initial teacher education programs: 1. Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/ Birth 12 Years) 2. Master of Teaching (Primary) 3. Master of Teaching (Secondary) All three programs build on the skills and experience you have gained from your undergraduate degree to provide you with COURSES SUMMARY a recognised teaching qualification in early childhood, primary or secondary teaching. Professional accreditation The Master of Teaching degrees from UWS are accredited with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES). You can view the requirements for primary and secondary teaching on the BOSTES website at nswteachers.nsw.edu.au The Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/Birth 12 Years) is accredited with BOSTES for teaching in primary schools from K-6 and with the Australian Children s Education and Care Quality Authority for teaching in services such as long day care and preschool. Professional experience Real-world experience is highly valued in these courses, offering students the opportunity to gain practical experience in relevant teaching settings as well as in settings which provide opportunities for community engagement. Having already completed a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies, Angel was one of the first students to undertake the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) at UWS in We had many opportunities to communicate with the academics they were very friendly and very supportive, Angel says. All the academics in the School of Education have very high standards of professionalism. They are very knowledgeable and are really good role models for me now I am working as an educator in higher education. When Angel completed her Masters, she gained experience in a variety of different education settings including long day care, preschools, primary schools as well as universities. This has really enriched my understanding of teaching and learning, as well as of myself. Inquisitive minds in the classroom always excite me and make all the hard work in schools worthwhile, she says. The degree is fantastic because it allows us to work from early childhood all the way to primary. YEAR 2 Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/ Birth 12 Years) full-time The Master of Teaching Birth 12 Years consists of 20 units, which are studied over 2.5 years, or students can complete 16 units in 2 years to obtain a Master of Teaching Birth 5 Years. Graduates of the UWS Bachelor of Social Science (Pathway to Early Childhood Teaching), Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies and Bachelor of Arts (Pathway to Teaching Birth 5/Birth 12) receive advanced standing and can complete the Birth 5 course in years and Birth 12 course in years. Further opportunities After completing your Master of Teaching you may go on to complete the Master of Inclusive Education which will give you a much soughtafter post-initial teaching qualification. Or you can complete a Master of Education specialising in Educational Leadership or Social Ecology. Should you choose to exit early with the Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years) you can work as a teacher or director in early childhood programs, including child care centres and preschools, take on professional roles in resource centres, family support programs and family day care schemes, and work as a consultant in the early childhood field.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts (Pathway to Teaching Primary) receive advanced standing of four units. Career opportunities The Master of Teaching (Primary) is recognised by BOSTES, the Catholic Education Office, the Association of Independent Schools, and also by Australian state and federal education systems and most other countries. Graduating students are also employed in museums, TAFE and industry and commerce as education officers. Many teachers move into a variety of other employment options by capitalising on their advanced communication and people skills. Our graduates are well prepared for teaching in socially and culturally diverse contexts and are highly regarded for employment in the growing Greater Western Sydney region. Sandra Muhieddine Current student, Master of Teaching (Primary) The Master of Teaching is a great course to be a part of, especially if you are passionate about learning, teaching and making a difference to our future generations, says current student Sandra Muhieddine. Your studies are based purely around the fundamentals of being a good educator, while the course provides real-life scenarios and learning approaches so you can really engage in the profession even before you start your career. The people at UWS are great to be around. There is a homely feel to the Bankstown campus which makes university life much easier. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) offers a flexible and engaging pathway to secondary teaching, she says. You will gain an understanding of practical issues in schools, and in teaching and learning. This degree prepares students for an active teaching career and, as a Masters level qualification, can help you progress more quickly into leadership positions. 5 TEACHING Entry requirements To be eligible for admission to the Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/Birth 12 Years), Master of Teaching (Primary) and Master of Teaching (Secondary) you must have completed an undergraduate degree. Additional information for applicants Applicants must meet the curriculum content requirements of the Australian Institute of Teaching Standards and Leadership. Where these requirements are not met, applicants may be offered concurrent enrolment in up to four undergraduate units of study. English proficiency requirements If you have undertaken studies overseas you may need to provide proof of proficiency in English. Minimum English proficiency requirements and acceptable proof is found on the Universities Admissions Centre website (UAC) at uac.edu.au Overseas qualifications must be deemed equivalent by the Australian Education International National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR) in order to be considered by UAC and UWS. Recognition of prior learning Special equivalence may be granted for academic, professional and/or any other qualifications you hold on the basis of evidence you submit at the time of application. You may apply for advanced standing if you have studied units in the degree as part of previous postgraduate study. Pathways You may choose to exit early from the Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/Birth 12 Years) if you want a Birth 5 Years qualification only. Students of the Master of Teaching (Primary) or the Master of Teaching (Secondary) have the option of graduating with a Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies after the completion of 80 credit points that do not include professional experience. The latter is not a teaching qualification. Even before completing my course, I met people that I would love to work with and gained a wider idea of what sort of fields I can branch into, she says. Studying at UWS has given me many opportunities, both short and long term. UWS is a student-friendly place. Great job opportunities are often advertised specifically to UWS students. Jobs I ve seen advertised have included working at the library in between classes and working in local museums over the summer or winter break. While I was studying I had a job with the University and I loved the flexibility and great working conditions. 5
