1 FOURTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE SPORT MANAGEMENT SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND THIRD WEEK OF NOVEMBER, 1998 GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY GOLD COAST CAMPUS ABOUT SMAANZ SMAANZ was founded in 1995 and formally established at the first conference held at Deakin University, Australia. At that conference 27 papers were presented primarily focussing on sport management related research both in New Zealand and Australia. The principle aim of SMAANZ is to provide scholarly inquiry into sport management related research and to provide a forum to present results from this sport management related research. SMAANZ has been predominantly established by members of universities offering sport management programmes. SMAANZ holds conferences annually and is seeking to establish a refereed journal. first year that the conference will be held in New Zealand is the SMAANZ contact information: Those interesting in submitting a presentation proposal, session proposal, or who have general interest in attending the conference are encouraged to contact the organising committee Scholars from all disciplines are encouraged to attend and to present the findings of their research. 4 UNIVERSITIES OLYMPIC WORKSHOP CENTRE FOR OLYMPIC STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Friday 22 August am to 5pm Vallentine Annexe, UNSW Rationale: It would be useful for academics involved in Olympic-related issues in Sydney, NSW and the ACT, to meet to discuss: (1) their current Olympic initiatives (research, teaching, consultancies etc.) and (2) their future plans. Such a meeting could explore future agendas as well as projects which might involve inter-university activity. People from other states are welcome to participate as well. Structure of the day: 1 An initial session for spokespersons from various universities to outline their Olympic activities. A representative from each of the twelve universities to provice a two-to-three page handout summarising activities at their university. 2 A session or two to raise future areas of importance and possible joint activities. Some of the issues which might be raised are: monitoring the Olympics recording the Games in 2000 the Olympic city after 2000 (what are the long-term goals of the Games?) devising a conference sche-dule benefits of the Games to universities Olympic archives and a museum an Olympic institutional structure (in universities) beyond 2000? 3 Afternoon workshops to flesh out the more promising issues. 4 Recommendations and anaction plan. 6 50 ASSH Bulletin No.26 June 1997 Gender, Sexualities and Sport Sexism and homophobia were two of the main topics addressed at the Gender, Sexualities and Sport Symposium held recently at Victoria University of Technology. In what was called the first of its kind by keynote speaker, Professor Helen Lenskyj, from the University of Toronto, the symposium brought together academics, administrators and journalists from across Australia and New Zealand to examine the role of sport in shaping gender and sexual identities. The great equaliser myth about sport was challenged by papers that dealt with how entrenched masculinity is in sport and the impact it has on player identities and relations, spectator relations, sport reporting and the larger issue of access and equity in sport. Abstracts will be published in the September issue of the Bulletin of Sport and Culture. Plans are underway to put together a Gender, Sexualities and Sport anthology to serve the needs of those Australian and New Zealand teachers and researchers looking for more Australian/New Zealand authorship and content on the issue.
