2 NATIONAL COURSE CODE: CHC30113 COURSE NAME: Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care Course overview This qualification teaches students the skills required to observe and document children s learning, to plan activities and provide care to children while facilitating their leisure and play. Students will learn the skills necessary to support children in achieving their developmental outcomes while supporting their wellbeing. Students will be trained use and understand the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations, Approved Learning Frameworks and organisation policies, procedures and philosophies. Learning Outcomes Develop positive and respectful relationships with children Support the holistic development of children in early childhood Provide experiences to support children's play and learning Use information about children to inform practice Use an approved learning framework to guide practice Support behavior of children and young people Support children to connect with their world Develop cultural competence On successful completion of this qualification it will prepare and assist you for job roles such as: Assistant Early Childhood Educator Family Day Care Educator In-home Care Educator OSHC Assistant When is the next course? You will be provided with all required text books, work booklets, a polo shirt for work placement, USB stick and welcome packs. There are no hidden costs, they are all clearly detailed on the fee schedule that is available on the AWCC website. 1 of 9

3 How can I complete this course? At the Albury Wodonga Community College we strive to deliver quality courses that are convenient to your needs. This course is offered on campus two days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) with a component of work placement to be completed in a Registered Early Childhood Service. What assessments will I be required to complete? You will need to: - Attend and participate in all classes unless otherwise arranged with the Department Coordinator - Competently complete compulsory practical training and observation in your workplace - Competently complete all assessment activities including allocated tasks, projects, scenarios, case studies, questions and work books - Competently document and analyse observations and information gathered and design, implement and evaluate a learning program and experiences for a group of children in your workplace over a 4 week period. As a compulsory component of this course you will be required to complete 120 hours of practical training. The Department Coordinator will discuss this with you at your pre-enrolment interview. As an adult learner you are to raise any concerns or problems that you may have in regards to completing any aspect of the course as soon as possible with your Trainer and Assessor or Department Coordinator to ensure actions can be put in place. What is required for Work Placement? As a compulsory component of this course you will be required to complete 120 hours of Work placement in a registered Early Childhood Service. The Department Coordinator will organise placement and students are required to attend placement 2 days per week, for approximately 12 weeks, this is completed in blocks. Placement will commence approximately 5 weeks from the start of the course, depending on when students provide their Working with Children Check to the Department Coordinator. Prior to industry placement, students will be required to complete a series of practical simulated tasks such as nappy changing, bottle preparation and settling a baby. This is to provide students with hands-on practical implementation of skills before entering a workplace environment, outside of the classroom. The specific aims of placement are: To apply knowledge and skills learned during your studies in the workplace; To become familiar with employers expectations; To increase your employment options and employability skills; and To broaden your understanding of the industry. What costs are involved? Our costs for this course are clearly detailed on our schedule of fees located on our website. Please read the information below to help determine if you might be eligible for state funding through the *VTG incentives. Course costs include all materials and resources required. *Victoria Training Guarantee Eligibility This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding to eligible individuals. To claim funding you must first meet the eligibility criteria. Visit the Victorian Department Education and Early Childhood Development website for further information regarding funding under the Victorian Training Guarantee Your eligibility will be assessed on an individual basis. 2 of 9

4 What support will be available? Each course has a dedicated Department Coordinator to support you through your course. In addition to this, you will have one or more Trainers and Assessors who teach, assess and support you throughout your course. All our staff are highly qualified trainers and assessors and specialists in the field they are teaching so they can offer you the most current and comprehensive knowledge to complete your course in readiness for industry. Are there any prerequisites required? - Course Application Form. Self-assessment information is collected in the Course Application Form. This is reviewed and discussed in the pre-enrolment interview with each individual. - Pre-enrolment interviews. These are conducted with every student to determine their competency and suitability to complete the course. Should learning assistance be required individualized plans are put in place for students. - Language, Literacy and Numeracy Under the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) Standards our organisation is required to assess the language, literacy and numeracy skills of all prospective students in order to determine the LLN skill level each prospective student has according to the demands of the course program the student is seeking to undertake. This accredited LLN tool will be completed as part of the pre-enrolment process.candidates seeking to undertake this course must have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills. - You must have basic computer knowledge and access to complete your course. - You must have basic internet knowledge and access to complete your course. - HLTAID004 FIRST AID: All candidates are required to complete/have a current certificate in this unit to complete the course. The Albury Wodonga Community College will provide students with information about a First Aid Provider who will deliver this training on campus. It is the responsibility of the students to enroll themselves in this training - Working with Children Checks: All candidates are required to complete/have a current New South Wales or Victorian (depending on what State work is carried out in) Working with Children Check, on commencement of this course. 9 Please read the following case study and then complete the questions. You have just been hired as an educator in a new infant toddler program. The director suggests that you spend your first few days gradually getting to know the children. On your first morning you observe the following interactions: A volunteer mum is happily playing peek-a-boo with her own 14-month-old daughter. The little girl is obviously delighting in the turn-taking pattern of conversation; there are lots of giggles from both of them. One of the educators is changing a child; she is talking to him about the clean nappy she is going to put on him. He is looking at her intently and reaches for the nappy while she is talking. Another child is crying softly near the entrance; her mum has just left. An educator is sitting beside her offering comforting words ('I can see you are feeling sad'; 'Your mummy will be back after lunch'). The sobbing toddler is leaning against the educator but does not seem to want to sit 1. Explain List the interaction you have observed between the adults in the room and the children 2.
