Family Connectivity Survey We need your help! At Whitley County Consolidated Schools, we are consistently working to ensure your child receives a world class education which will provided her/him with unlimited opportunities upon graduation. As part of this effort, WCCS staff members know our students must be using technology on a regular basis at school and at home. Knowing how many families have internet access and what type of Internet access will help our staff prepare for this increased usage. On February 4th,, you received a very short, 8 question Family Connectivity survey. The purpose of the survey is to determine what percentage of our students have at-home access to the internet. Every response is critical. The information will be used to plan for students who do not have access beyond the school. Additionally, we need to know the type of Internet access each family has as teachers create assignments and resources for students to utilize at home. The survey was sent out on Monday, February 4th, attached to an email. For those families who do not have email addresses on file with the school received a hard copy sent home with your students. Please complete/ return the survey by February 11th. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Emergency Dismissal Drill Successful The WCCS Emergency Dismissal drill held in early December was very successful thanks to the efforts of our families, students, and staff at each building. We were able to get students home in a safe and timely manner. Later this winter or early spring, we will hold one more announced Emergency Dismissal drill. In order to ensure the continued safety of our students, we ask that families keep the Emergency Dismissal information up-todate so our staff can help your children get to the correct location. Kindergarten Kindergarten is 100 days Smarter! One hundred day of Kindergarten arrived in January! We made hats, mats, snacks, and thought about what we would do with 100 dollars! What a fun day to celebrate! Mrs. Bird s class Mrs. Harrison s class Mrs. Pierce s class 1st Grade First graders have been quite busy!! We celebrated the 100 th day of school with lots of fun activities and WONDER- FUL 100 day projects! In Reading, we have been learning about Author s purpose, comparing and contrasting stories, and learning about main ideas and supporting details. We are getting better as writers and we are writing lots of good stories and learning how to add more details to them. We are having a great time in Math learning all about place value. We are playing fun games with the base 10 blocks and learning all about numbers.
2nd Grade Second graders have been working hard on so many different projects! We are finishing up biographies in our writing. We've learned about researching and writing timelines with this project as well. We have also been studying solids, liquids, and gases. Many fun projects have been done in class to learn these three states of matter. Our hundredth day celebration was fantastic! We had a variety of activities to do involving the number 100. We also wrote about what we will look and act like when we are 100 years old. We even had pictures to show us what we might look like. The students found this wildly funny and were very creative in their writing. 3rd Grade The third graders are on the look out for Pathogens. So their inquiring minds will want to know more about these pathogens and why there is so much news coverage about them in the fall and winter. They will also be discovering why are some diseases are contagious and some diseases are not. We are reading fables to uncover the theme (lesson) in them. Along with fables, we will comparing/contrasting myths and tall tales. Do you know why our literature includes fables, myths, and tall tales?
4th Grade Fourth graders have been very busy keeping up with our crazy schedule! With the delays and snow days, we have had to work extra hard! We have been learning about electricity, and had Mr. Sauder s visit from the REMC to teach us about electrical safety. We built our own circuits and learned about the flow of electricity. We are now working with the Fort Wayne Children s Zoo to do a unit on animal studies. We are building terrariums and learning about animal adaptations with our very own millipedes! In Math we are becoming masters of division, and are working on perimeter and area. We will be moving on to other topics in geometry soon! We have just finished our MAP testing for winter, so we know where we need to continue working. In writing we have been working on stories to go along with the lifeline of Caring. We will also be moving into our nonfiction unit soon. Look for more information coming home 5th Grade The fifth grade had an enjoyable day at the Shrine Circus on Friday, January 23. The Shrine Organization always does a remarkable job of organizing this event for the students. Last year, the 5 th grade were unable to attend because of the weather, so the Shriners made sure that they were able to be a part of the event at the Fort Wayne Coliseum this year. On Monday, the fifth grade were able to be in the audience of a Fur Trader from Canada as he talked to the students about his life after arriving in the United States with the Indians, primarily the Miami, in the Northeastern Region of our young country in the middle 1700 s. This gentleman came to us as part of the sponsorship of Honeywell Education Department. The fifth graders appreciated his elaborate knowledge of this time period and how it relates to U.S. History.
Art In the Art Studio Classroom students will continue to work at the Drawing, Painting, and Collage, glitter and glue, wheat paste, modeling clay, stacking and printmaking and stamping center for the month of February. The 3/D and sculpture centers will be introduced and opened for students to explore. Students can create; Models, masks, dolls, jewelry, mobiles and more. Art Standards that that students will be assessed on are: 6.4 Students demonstrates thoughtfulness and care in creating artwork. 6.5 Students reflect on and share work with others. And 6.6 Students respect personal work and the work of others. Students are creating unique individual artistic creations that they may submit for display. Student artwork that is submitted must include an artist statement that describes their creations. Please remember to have children wear their art making cloths on art days. Smocks and paint shirts are available for students to wear, but accidents still happen! Art Grades can be checked on Harmony. Music Music The 4 th Grade performed their program on transportation Thursday. January 29, 2015. The 3 rd graders have started working on their program, which is about why we have gym class in school. The date of the 3 rd grade program is February 12th. Second grade will start work on their program the first week of February. The 2 nd grade program is scheduled for March 26, 2015. Kindergarten is continuing their learning about steady beat. First grade is learning about rests in music. The 4 th & 5 th graders are excitedly working on learning to play their recorders. Gym The gym classes have been working hard since we have been back from Christmas break. We are all trying to build up our stamina in our running so we are ready for our timed run at the end of the school year. We are trying to strengthen our muscles by doing our push-ups, crunches, and daily challenges. We are also working on coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship in the activities we are doing. Grades 3-5 finished up their basketball unit and have since started their kickball unit. Kindergarten-2 nd finished their hula hoop unit and now are doing bean bag activities. Congratulations to Brady Hartman for representing Coesse Elementary in the regional Hoop Shoots competition on January 18!
Coesse Cares! This month our students have been learning about the lifeline of caring. Teachers have discussed the lifeline with their students and the student ambassadors did a lesson with all students. The ambassador lesson focused on caring in three areas; home, school, and our community. As a way to practice caring in our community, we are having our service learning project. Through this service learning project, the students are going to raise money to donate to the local homeless shelter, the Lighthouse. This is a transitional shelter in Whitley County that helps people get training, education, and jobs. It helps many people in our area. Now through February 13 th, students can purchase hearts and write their name on them. The hearts will be hung on display. We are hoping to fill the whole wall by the cafeteria with hearts to show we care. Each heart costs $.50. Please consider using this opportunity to help your child learn about ways to show caring to their community.
